speaking css in tongues
November 24, 2002
Much gratitude to Pedro Mendes for his ongoing interest and support for web standards. This week, he published one of my CSS articles in his native language, Portuguese, for your enjoyment. Thanks, Pedro!
In other news, Comdex was great as I met terrific people and had great sessions despite the low turnout and concerns about the industry in general. I've spent the weekend at my folks, they live outside of Las Vegas on Lake Mead. It's been gorgeous and great to be with them as always. Tomorrow, back home.
is smaller better?

This year, the venerable Comdex Las Vegas show is pretty much limited to the Las Vegas Convention Center. It appears as though it might be a better turnout than last year, which was dismal in the aftermath of 9/11. I'm really looking forward to this year. It appears to be a much more focused event, but certainly worthwhile.
You know I'll keep you posted. Meanwhile, the events page can supply you with presentation details.

Information architecture. The term's been around but it's always been a bit, well, vague. What does it really mean?
You can find out all about IA from a brand new organization of information architects: Asilomar Institute for Information Architecture (AIfIA).
A bit heady sounding, you say? Perhaps. But first consider:
- The organization is comprised of some of the most sophisticated minds in the industry
- AIfIA is non-profit, motivated toward awareness and education
- AIfIA works intensely to promote standards and best practices in every aspect of Web design
Jeff Lash says this:
"the real power of AIfIA is the ability to connect people. For IAs working alone in an organization, or freelancers, or people learning on their own about information architecture, it's difficult to know where to turn for help or experience. AIfIA will hopefully be a great resource for people who don't have a local network of support, and for people who do have a local network, AIfIA will be a great supplement.
In other, architecturally-unrelated news, I can't get enough of Peter Gabriel's UP. And Mazzy Star, I have to say, sounds better on her own.
the fourth horseman cometh?
November 6, 2002
Attempting to comfort myself after a morning of Republicans, I turned instead to my inbox. In place of comfort, however, I found some rather disturbing items waiting for me. Consider:
You can capture the carbon in your loved one and make them into a piece of jewelry. Life Gems will do it all for you. You can plan the cremation, or have them unbury your dead to get that carbon essence. And guess what, they do pets, too!
I imagine this conversation:
"Rik, dude, what's up? Great new nose ring!"
"Ya, it was my ex girlfriend. I loved her, man."
If that bit isn't enough to amuse or abuse, try something you can use: Usability humor. Anitra's written a bit of a Jakob Jingle. In her anthem, sung to the tune of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" the lovely Ms. Pavka points out that "Your users are naiver / he makes you a believer."
Then, there was the note from my brother Linus:
I have just decided that the Anna Nicole Smith show is a cultural train wreck. I am sure that they broadcast it in Cuba in order to cement the power of the regime. Everyone connected with the show must be hunted down and killed and any evidence that the program existed must be wiped off the face of the earth. Else the apocalypse is upon us.
Love,
Linus

soulseek and ye shall find . . .

Soulseek is by far the best P2P client I've had since AudioGalaxy shut up tighter than a . . . well, you fill in the blanks. It's quick, it's got rich features, no adware, no spyware, just the pure goods.
spam, and then some
November 2, 2002
There's spam, and then there are the emails showing up this week advertising the Simpsons Talking Bottle Opener. Apparently, it's the perfect gift, makes beverage time fun, and is a hit at parties, too.
Will I be left out if I don't get one?
