Web With Molly: Core HTML and CSS for the Open Web

This is a free opportunity for Web designers and developers interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the core technologies which we use for the Open Web. The event is open to twenty (20) people. Potential attendees, please read this post and respond as requested in comments.

Who is the event for?

Working Web designers and developers, students and educators with at least 1 year experience building Web sites using markup and CSS. All prospective attendees will be required to provide a link to a portfolio, code sample, app or other project on which they have worked.

When is the event?

The event will be held the 10-12 of February, 2012 in Tucson, Arizona USA.

The schedule is as follows:

  • Friday evening 19:00 – 23:30. Meet and Greet with introductory talk: The Open Web Technology Stack. After, enjoy beverages, snacks and get-to-know you chatter with attendees.
  • Saturday 10:00 – 18:00. Core Markup: From HTML to XHTML and Back. Full day of markup history, rationale, best practices with plenty of emphasis on HTML5 and emerging techniques.
  • Sunday 10:00 – 18:00. Core CSS: From Inheritance, Cascade and Specificity to current W3C work on emerging techniques for layout.
  • Sunday 19:00 – ‘late. Margarita Madness! We will all enjoy a fantastic, authentic Sonoran Mexican meal and Margaritas as well as share stories and laughs about our lives and experiences.

Where is the event?

The Friday evening event will be held at a private residence, address to be provided to attendees upon acceptance. Saturday and Sunday workshops will be held at Tucson’s very own Spoke6 – a downtown co-working space.

What about lodging and transportation?

Because the event is free, attendees are asked to cover their own lodging and transportation to Tucson. While we have a wide range of accommodation types in Tucson from hostels to high-end spas, February is a very busy month with the annual Gem show and Rodeo Days. If you’re interested, you may want to reserve a room now. We will also do our very best to find reasonable accommodations for you if you’re having trouble. Once in Tucson, we will set up car-pools for travel as necessary.

What do I need to do to be considered?

Respond here in comments to be considered. Write a bit about yourself, share a link or two to what you’re working on and add a sentence or two on why you believe an event like this will be beneficial to you.

We look forward to a weekend of great fun and learning!

I am in Los Angeles, & I am totally bummed because I’d jump at this chance.
I really like your Lynda.com tutorial on CSS. I am a print graphic designer, who foolishly thought teaching myself ActionScript 3.0 would make my animations “easier / faster / re-usable”… and now two years later I’ve become a reluctant coding geek 😉
If you’re ever holding a similar even in Southern California, please let me know.
    Goodbye AS 3.0 .. Hello HTML5
