Google Maps Street View: Oopsie!
Was checking out maps of the area so I can find my way from here to there and back again. Lo and behold, this is what I stumbled across with street view:

I wonder how often this type of thing has actually been found on street view. It’s so very funny, but not.

hi Molly, any chance of the URL. It is strange scooting down strange streets in street view. Ever get bored, try the Eyre highway across the Nullarbor, straight and boring with the frequent kangaroo corpse for company ;.
I see from the photo you are not in Norway yet
I just see two cars at a intersection. Maybe my humor is limited, by I really don’t see what is funny about this picture.
Please explain.
I too have no idea why this is interesting.
This is not an intersection. It’s a car coming out of a business with a car speeding on the street right in front of it. These cars either hit each other, or very nearly did, and it was captured within Google street view. My point is, I wonder how often these sorts of misses, near misses, and actual accidents are actually there in Google street view.
To me, it’s funny at first glance. Thinking more deeply about it, I wonder what legal ramifications are involved, whether the people who actually are in accidents captured in street view know about it, can they use this as official documentation in a legal complication of an accident and so forth.
Hey Molly,
Good explanation, I can understand why you would think it was funny. What are the chances that you would catch something like that on google street view? Hey maybe this image could be helpful to both driver insurance companies to determine who’s fault it was
@media marc: wshew. I thought it was just me
There are entire web sites now dedicated to “funnies” snapped on street view. I guess the best known incident that kicked off some privacy issues down in Oz is this one: http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23530849-details/Google%27s+Street+View+captures+the+moment+a+drunken+Aussie+keeled+over+outside+his+home/article.do
It isn’t Big Brother that’s watching, it’s Google
@nickobec: I spent a month in Norway last week
Seriously, I only go to Oslo when absolutely necessary. Brrr!
@Keith: Now THAT is funny. Sick and wrong, but funny. D’ya think our friend “Bill” really had a dead friend, or just made that up to hide his embarassment? Seriously, no one should have to defend why they’re passed out on the side of the street to the public. A “peace” officer one can understand – someone concerned about one’s welfare or public behavior. But seriously. Yikes!
Did anybody else see the streetview from New York where the Google car hit a deer? They have since taken the images down but it was pretty strange to see a closeup of a deer head right before it went spinning and bouncing off to the side of the road. Needless to say that road was only half covered as the car stopped taking pictures immediately after the impact.
@Tom: What a terrible story! Ah dear, poor deer.
Here’s a link Molly if you haven’t seen it.
I came here from Twitter with you mentioning the bit about religious *.TLDs. If you have a link for that, I would love to see it. Have a local pastor who’s been wanting this for years for religious groups and institutions.
And here is a tutorial for Google Maps made in paper
(just for fun)
Pretty sure you’ll like it.
