Ooh, Look, Standards ROI at Microsoft!

Here’s a little ditty I whipped up for the fab folks at MIX for your non-standard awareness enjoyment. A nice quick read and something to take to the boss, too!

Check out “Where the ROI is” and leave a nice note to Microsoft and MIX for not just wanting this sort of material, but actually asking for it.

Maybe, just maybe I left a little mark on the Microsoft wall as I tumbled out the door in June?

A little mark on the Microsoft wall? I think (and hope) you left scars deep enough to jog their memory for years to come.

P.S. My non-Hater self will keep a copy and URL of this for future reference, since manager-types (and even even other developers, sadly) generally have quite a lack of understanding of precisely this. So,”Thank you!” for that.

  2. Great article, Molly. I’ve left my 0.02GBP over there:-)

The problem with these types of articles on financial benefits is that such is not documented with a hard financial analysis of such a claim(s) on ROI. It is not to say that such an analysis by a competent source, e.g. one of the ‘Big 4′ accounting firms, doesn’t exist … just that I haven’t seen one. If you want to sell business an idea, start off with hard numbers first. Otherwise, face the reality of dismissal by that business of the argument being nothing more than ‘all hat and no cattle’.

Yes, a standard is necessary. The only question is how much is it really worth. The chaos with the different versions IE Explorer shows that it will cost a lot if you do not comply with standards. Part here we have been just in a strategic battlefield of Microsoft.
