Finally, Affordable Web Training!
Finally, Web design and development courses that you can do right from the comfort of your own home! After years of traveling the world doing workshops and presentations, I’m getting a little world-weary and would like to focus more on teaching rather than the latest and greatest in best packing techniques!
This is not to say you won’t see me at public venues, because you will. But after years of providing a variety of educational materials I’m finally going to try out something that will make learning fun and affordable, and bring me some income without having to get out of my pajamas (I really like my pajamas).
I’m building a new site dedicated to providing beginning, intermediate, advanced and expert-level courses in HTML, XHTML, CSS, Web Design, Universal (Accessible) Design, Project Management, Content Development and a range of other topics.
Course features include:
- Live, direct teaching with me via chat (typical courses run 1 hour per week and are based on a day/time agreeable to all students)
- Small courses: Only six total students per course, plus 1 intern
- 1/2 hour one-on-one assessment chat at end of course
- 24/7 moderated forums
- PDF and HTML-based course material
- Course slides where appropriate
- Articles and helpful resource packet for all registered students
- A certificate of completion (upon completion of course!)
- Books, software and other awesome schwag as available
Course costs:
Each five week course (described above) costs 125.00 USD. This amount is non-refundable, but if you miss a session or are unable to make a course, you will be re-scheduled as soon as possible. Course payment: Payment is in advance via PayPal. You may also use direct deposit transfers or certified checks if you prefer, just let me know privately. There are other course types in the running, as well as one-on-one courses, full day workshop intensives and courses taught by others.
Internetships:
Each course can accommodate up to one intern. Internships are really scholarships, the intern must come from circumstances that prohibit payment, show strong initiative, and have excellent online skills. Additional internships are available for folks interested in answering questions and monitoring forums. Please respond directly to me mollyatmollydotcom if you want to be considered for an internship.
Inaugural course: HTML 4.01 Foundations
Whether hand-coding or using applications such as Dreamweaver or Expression Web, understanding HTML (and how browsers understand it too!) gives designers and developers the ability to problem solve and innovate.
This course provides students with a comprehensive study of HTML as a language. From DOCTYPEs and DTD’s to syntax and semantics, participants will take from this course a very strong understanding of HTML.
The course is limited to a total of six (6) registered attendees, plus 1 intern. It is taught directly by me and will commence Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at a time agreed upon by all attendees (due to global nature of course).
Students should have some familiarity with HTML and general Web design.
Talk to yer Mols
If you have interest in this course, or are interested in future courses, please post in the comments.

I heard about this on your Twitter feed and thought it was a really great idea; as a CS student in the UK and I’m keen to learn more about, well, everything web-related really but conferences and workshops are prohibitively expensive.
I’d really appreciate an RSS feed of upcoming courses (of all types), if you could set that up at some point.
Thanks and good luck.
November 25th, 2008 at 9:34 am
I’m very interested in this project. Will these courses be ongoing (i.e. every quarter, every month)? Or will they be a one shot deal. Like if I miss the HTML course, will there be another chance to go through it?
Anyway, I’m very interested and hope you do well with this!
November 25th, 2008 at 9:36 am
Nicely done! Trying to figure out if there’s anything I should take… are you doing any sort of Javascript course?
November 25th, 2008 at 9:37 am
Kris: courses will be revolving, and yep, Rosellyne, I’ll get those RSS feeds out too. I’m still finishing the site
Thanks for the support!

This sounds like a great idea, I’ll be very interested to see where it goes! In particular, I’d be interested in expert-level XHTML, CSS, or advanced-level accessibility courses for myself. I’ll stay tuned for more details. Best of luck with the endeavor, and keep us posted!

@traderzed: Down the road yes. Not in the main plan for the first few months though

Molly,
Atta girl! You know, I’ve been suggesting an online course model to you for years! :–)
Say, sign me up for an intern position. Come to think of it, I’ll help you find a few students.
I’ve seen you work in your jammies and I know how comfortable they make you feel. As a matter of fact, I am wearing mine this morning.

Wow, sounds like the kind of learning situation that I love! I’m interested, right from the basics and certainly working toward accessibility. I have been avoiding diving in for years and this would be a great opportunity.
I look forward to seeing what more comes up. Not sure December 3 works for me (and I bet you are subscribed already). [Depends when my Social Security deposit shows up - I may have to make this my Christmas and January birthday present.]
PS: I always have my eyes out for materials and processes that support novice software developers in their learning and development too (not web development), so I am doubly curious.

This is awesome. I couldn’t make it when you had the two-day training session, this feels like another chance - I am very interested.

I’m interested! My skills are intermediate, but I’d love to learn from the best! I’d take a whole series of coarses

Hi,
I’m also very interested in your courses. I’d like to see the list of topics each course will have, so I can decide in which ones to enroll
Thanks.

Sounds like a great idea

Can’t wait to see future courses!!
November 25th, 2008 at 11:28 am
WOW! I’m definitely interested, I’m just afraid with only six students per class I’ll never be able to get in as they’re sure to fill up quickly… Is there a schedule of classes available yet?
November 25th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
Yes, very interested.
November 25th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
Hi, I am very interested in learning how to create professional websites. I was just researching local workshops being offered but couldn’t find what I wanted. This sounds like just what I am looking for. I have many skills (ingredients)and need assistance in combining them - a recipe for success if you will.
November 25th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
I am very very interested in this. I have a strong HTML background, but would be interested in “attending” the inaugural course!
November 25th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Good golly Miss Molly! What a brilliant idea! I am interested, but not until next year. Will keep an eye out for what is coming up
November 25th, 2008 at 6:10 pm
Great idea, Molly!
Affordable price for students with small enough classes that they don’t get lost in the shuffle.
Sounds like just the right ticket for you at this point.
November 26th, 2008 at 2:34 am
Hi Mols, course sounds great, and I’m definitely interested! (So, will we be getting an exclusive Molcam shot of you in your jim-jams?
)
Thinking of getting some of my colleagues together and book a full course, would that be possible?
November 26th, 2008 at 8:48 am
Count me in too - can’t wait to see what you’ve got coming next year!
November 26th, 2008 at 11:03 am
Thanks everyone!
@kathy, yep, in a case like that I’d just schedule an additional course for your group.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:31 am
OK, I’m ready to sign up. Spouse agrees to treating this course as combined Christmas and January birthday present to myself. Let me know how to get in!
November 26th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
Molly, I would be interested in taking the Universal (Accessible) Design. Thanks, Kurt
November 26th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
Keep me on the mailing list, please! How great of you to be doing this. Looking forward to further developments
November 26th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
Molly- I am new to the IS world of technology and would love to get more training through your classes. I heard about them through twitter. I am a pharmacist who’s building electronic health care record stuff in Epic. I am SO green…
November 26th, 2008 at 11:32 pm
Wonderful idea, Molly.
Please keep me posted.
November 27th, 2008 at 2:10 am
I’m very interested. you are highly regarded.
a friend made me privy to this opportunity.
let me know of updates.
thanks

I’m really interested in this course if it hasn’t already filled up.
Good for me to learn everything properly rather than hacking away with little clue
November 28th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
I tried to take a … ahem… web design course that started with the instructor showing how to use “view source” as ‘a great way to snag other people’s ideas, change font color, and you’ve got your own website’.
Yikes. I didn’t make it past the 2 week point, and figured I would never be able to find good courses…and have been trying to learn on my own.
I would LOVE to take your Foundations class, and am also interested in any future online courses you might offer!
Yay for web standards!!! Yay for Molly! Yay for students!
November 28th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Oh my gosh. This sounds wonderful. I’d love to get in on this if it’s not already filled up. I will officially be holding my breath until I hear from you, hahaha j/k. Seriously, I took your CSS Lynda.com course you did with Andy Clarke and got a lot from it but am still lacking a certain something. This sounds like exactly what’s missing. GREAT idea Molly.
Please advise if the first timeslot is still available.

This is an amazingly credible business model. I really cannot believe that I have not seen type of tutorial/mentoring before. Perhaps it’s not a new idea, but, certainly I’m not aware of it.
With Molly at the heml, I am sure that this would be a great exchange of ideas, and the potential for a ‘personal’ experience is very compelling. 6-to-1 is an extremely fair ratio.
I’m very seriously thinking about this, but would like to see how the negotiations for the material to be covered go. I live in the UK as well, and so will Molly even be awake when I want to learn!?!
Please keep me posted.
Nathan.
November 29th, 2008 at 8:18 am
Addendum: I doubt very much that Molly will be all that interested in being at the ‘heml’ of anything, perhaps the helm sounds better.
I really ought to proof read what I write, I hate it when people make cloomsy mistoks.
Nathan - again!

November 30th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
Hey Molly,
This is an awesome idea. I can hack a little html - I actually built a few sites back in about 1995! - but that’s not what I do… I would be really interested in anything you have to say/teach on the strategy side… usability, persuasion, visual branding, CTA’s… anything like that in the works?
Looking forward to seeing you in person in April in Halifax!
Cheers,
Rob

Is it too late to get in on this. Seems like a great idea. As someone with 10+ years in IT training I love to see people that can make good computer training accessible and affordable at the same time.

Sounds awesome. Please add me to your email list for these classes if you have one. I’m interested in beginning programming (javascript or php), expert level css, advanced design principles, and anything on using CMS’s on small business sites.
Thanks,
Amy

Thanks !!

I surely hope nobody cleared their schedule for this or forked over $125 for a class that never happened. Considering your reputation, one would hope that there would better communication. Time to twitter, but no time to update?
December 8th, 2008 at 6:36 am
I am definitely interested!
December 8th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
Hi Molly, I’m a graphic designer at OmniTI and our new creative director, Jon Tan, highly recommended your courses to me. I have a background in print and publications design, and a limited knowledge of html. I’m very interested in taking your xhtml and/or css course as soon as possible. Please let me know how I can go about registering for your next course.

While I’ve deluded myself into thinking that I know an awful lot about HTML 4.01, I’m definitely interested in seeing where these courses are headed. This is a fabulous idea.
(And it’s not much, but let me know if there’s anything I can do to help. Not that you need it!)
December 8th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
This sounds excellent. Regardless of my current (pretty good) knowledge of web design, I think this will be really beneficial.
