Based on my “floating” iTunes playlist, some Aphex Twin, some Broken Social Scene, some Massive Attack, some Hot Chip, some other stuff (including a little Faithless).

The Postal Service, or something classical. (That’s classical in the Bach sense, not the Motorhead sense.)

Depends on my mood. If I’m chilling I’ll go for some Alice Russell, Portishead, The Black Keys, Freeland, The Subways, Logistics and now I’m rocking out.

My buddy Drew always swore by Miles Davis’s In a Silent Way. He was right about that one, as he was about most things.
Either/Or by Elliott Smith will do in a pinch as well. Or maybe Good Dog Bad Dog by Over the Rhine.
I like that this post is tagged with “religion”.

Right now, it’s Depeche Mode and Death Cab For Cutie.
June 19th, 2008 at 11:43 pm

Depends on mood really. Maybe some Muddy waters, Eric Clapton, Moe Kaufman, Debussy, The Eagles, Queen, Warrant

Depends on the night, really. On different nights 4am has meant goa/psytrance, industrial, metal, chill, goth, punk (my ipod on random is a bit odd at times
).
If you’re still going at 4am there’s often something already on and that’s part of the story. Although in .au 4am often means you’re going the distance with Rage
All else being equal it’s hard to beat Staring At The Sea, The Cure’s singles from 1979-1985. We used to put it on at college a lot when we were on one of our late night drinking-and-talking sessions.

John Martyn’s “Small Hours” must have been written for those 4:00am moments. As far as LPs go I guess “A kind of Blue” by Miles Davis still cuts it at that time of day.
There’s plenty of music for other times… currently listening to the Foo Fighters and Primal Scream.

4am music?
The hot breath and cold nose of my miniature schnauzer demanding that I get up and play with him, two hours before my alarm goes off.
The squeal of three, two week old puppies, pleading for mom to come back and feed them.
The swish of water leaving the toilet, signaling the resolution of the reason I’m awake at 4am.
