TravelBlog 2008: Australia and New Zealand

I’m in Houston and in a few hours will board a plane that will take me to Guam, then on to Cairns and points in Australia and New Zealand.

There are two concise reasons this trip is important to me:

1). 2008 marks the 20th (yes, that’s TWENTIETH) year online (bbs’s anyone?)
2). I turn 45 on the 25. It’s a rite of passage, I think.

For one month I’m going to explore Australia and New Zealand. I will post photos and ideas and inspiration.

I am also working hard, my current project: massive HTML and CSS testing for MS.

I’m very excited.

Enjoy your time down under! And Happy Birthday in advance!

  5. Cam Pegg Says:

  6. Nick Cowie Says:

    Molly you young pup you.

Hopefully you will make it to Perth, Western Australia so I can buy you a beer for your birthday. If you don’t mind drinking with an old bloke and reminisce on what the web was like when I was 45.

  7. Kate Bolin Says:

20 years online! That’s incredibly awesome.

I’ve hit my 15-year mark this year. However, it just makes me overly nostalgic for Gopher and the MUDs I used to hang out on. But 15 years ain’t bad for a girl who didn’t have her own computer until ‘99. Roll on the next 15!

  8. Lance Willett Says:

Molly: happy birthday and hope you have a wonderful time in New Zealand and Australia. I look forward to pictures and stories…

  9. Stephen Walter Says:

Have a great time. Sydney is great this time of year.

  10. Kat Says:

Where abouts are you touring in Australia?

NB. Some parts of Australia are very very clique-y. So the best way of finding out what’s the best to see and do is to ask a local (you may not necessarily find out otherwise). However, it is no guarantee that the local knows either.

I love my home town! :)

  11. Yvonne Adams Says:

The trip sounds fun (even the testing part). Only 20 years? I just realized that I’ve been online for 25 (with friends who’ve been online even longer).

Sobering when I think of the web geeks that weren’t even born when I first fired up a modem (300 baud even!).

  12. Steven Clark Says:

Have fun in Australia… don’t forget our little island Tasmania on your tours :)

  13. Gavin j Says:

You are so going to be smothered with hospitality!

  14. Josh K Says:

    Molly,

Melbourne is a wonderful place to visit but even better if you know where to get the best fried dumplings in town. Drop me a line and I’ll point you there.

  15. Tani Says:

Hi, I’m from Wellington, New Zealand. I just got your CSS book from the library and was going through the exercises when I decided to check out your website and found that you’re coming this way. How cool is that! Have a great holiday.

Molly, happy birthday, and you have a great trip to know new friend
The sun will always back tomorrow I know

  18. Claire Says:

Hey Mols! It’s my 20 year anniversary too - what a coincidence - it seems we’ve known each other for 20 years :)

Hey - while you’re in New Zealand - tell your friends (seems there are people there waiting for ya) - that you have a friend who knits and crochets and would love some wool - and maybe the’ll be able to point you in the right direction :)

Oh - and that birthday thang - always remember - no matter what happens - I’m always going to be older than you

Have a great trip and a happy birthday!

  19. phil Says:

Claire - If Molly can swing by my little slice of paradise in the lower North Island, I’ll give her a bag of alpaca fleece to bring back to the states (we just sheared them a couple of weeks ago)….would love to see her getting that through airport security.

If that’s too logistically convoluted, I’ll be getting some spun soon and can ship it to you. I can also point you to suppliers of all sorts of specialty fiber down here. (phil at euphoria dot org)

  20. Philip Renich Says:

Hey! Glad to hear you’re taking time to visit the South Pacific! No sense coming down here and just talking at a conference. Hopefully I’ll be up to see you at Web Stock. Still trying to see if I can make the trip from the south island.
Enjoy your time in these beautiful countries!

  21. fwolf Says:

bbs? well .. yes, of course. Been doing, been sysop for some years, then the internet hype hit Germany in its fulls - and gone was the good ole BBS scene :-/

    2008 marks the 13th year online ;)

    cu, w0lf.

  22. Claire Says:

    Phil -

ALPACA! My favorite! MOLS - get that fleece from him!! THANKS! I don’t spin - but I do have friends who do - so fleece is PERFECT. Mols - you have to check out the alpaca - I believe they were the basis for push-me-pull-you (Dr Dolittle) - plus - some of them have hair on their heads like Lyle Lovette .

Molly and I go way back to the GEnie days (remember them - before Al Gore invented the Internet ) - so we really have known each other for 20 years (yes - I knew her before she was famous :) and yes - I am even older than she is (3 years) ). I, however, am an attorney - so I concentrate on the legal end of the ‘net - not the design end y’all know.
