Double Dare: Your Last Meal on Earth

So I posted this to Twitter:

Twitter Poll: If you had to decide your final meal on earth, what would it be?

Which emerged from this post:

you know, if I ever get the death penalty for offing some bad ex boyfriend, my last meal will be exactly that. (Rib Eye bloody, plus taters and veg)

Then a lovely fellow emailed me from Ask500people:

Hey Molly, Just saw your tweet, would you like us to run your question on Ask500People.com? We could gather 100 votes for it.

And snarkily, after eating a really good steak and “hopped” up on Pike Pale and red meat, I responded:

So you’re saying if we ask 500 people we’ll only get 100 responses?

Double dare you to make more than 100 posts about what is your perfect last meal on earth.

GO!

  1. Kevin Lawver Says:

Baby rabbit wrapped in bacon from the amazing L’Hermitage du Riou in Mandelieu-La Napoule, France. Best meal I’ve ever had, and second and third best.

  2. Sarah Isaacson Says:

Crusted spiced salmon with fresh asparagus washed down with a glass of Tigress Sauvignon Blanc. Oysters for Entree, and my mother’s death by chocolate cake for dessert.

The salmon mentioned above was had at the Stillwater Restaurant in Launceston Tasmania and it was one of the most sublime culinary experiences ever.

  3. Steve Fleischer Says:

A large doner kebab with chips and a few pints of Riggwelter.

  4. DJ Mills Says:

My mama’s chicken gumbo … but 1 day after being made (after it’s been frozen and then thawed). Served over freshly-made Mahatma long-grain rice.

  5. Kay Smoljak Says:

Poached eggs, runny, on toasted english muffins with cheese and lots of salt.

Hmmm, ’scuse me, I’m off to get the boyfriend out of bed to make it for me now…

  6. Christopher Schmitt Says:

Spaghetti with sausage and meatballs, with a fine salad and tasty bread.

  7. shashib Says:

Nice flaky Nan bread with spicy ground chicken. Thai lobster with green chillies and green curry

  8. Kai Schaller Says:

I have to second Steve Fleischer on the döner kebab. One of my absolute favorite things to eat when I’m in Berlin.

  9. Alexia Moore Says:

You question really sparked some soul searching in me! Wow, I’m amazed to say that it would be the food my grandmother use to cook for me. She was the most amazing woman in the world. She was German, born in Russia and came to america in ~1920. I don’t know how to spell this stuff, so you germans out there please forgive my lack of Deutsche sprechen!!

Flouman Flinsin - A stack of about 50 thin crepes layered in between with sweet and tart homemade plum sauce, with homegrown plums. Stacked, and served warm cut in wedges like a cake.

Kleckemouse - Slightly sweet creamy soup with small flour dumplings

Pffernusse (peppernuts) - small nut-sized hard baked cookies that are spiced like pumpkin pie. They last forever, I’ve found them in the pockets of old winter coat years later and they were still good.

Turkey - brined overnight and roasted in the oven with spices so the skin gets nice and brown and crunchy!

Marzepan - almond paste mini-cookies hand sculpted to look like fruit. They have to be made with FRESH AUTHENTIC almond paste, VERY IMPORTANT

thanks for the trip down memory lane!!

  10. Twisted Intellect Says:

Well, I don’t really care, as long as there are a lot of courses, to drag out the time… ;)

  11. Jesse Gardner Says:

Boxed macaroni and cheese with hot dogs cut up into it and a big tall glass of Jack and Coke.

  12. Scott Fegette Says:

Without a doubt - some grade-A sashimi (hamachi & toro primarily), a nice bowl of miso, some oshidashi on the side and a fat bottle of Nigori sake with kick for days to make my transition to the other side a painless one… :)

  13. thacker Says:

Double dare, huh. And a risk free one at that.

A half dozen raw eggs floating in a little OJ. 32 ozs. of B complex enriched water for full hydration.

  14. Levi Figueira Says:

I guess a nice green-bean soup my mom makes (no one else!), followed by her white rice and a turkey steak (more than one actually :p), with a lettuce/tomato/olive oil/salt/oregano salad to mix with the rice…

dang.. I miss my mom’s food :| argh

  15. Peter Hyde-Smith Says:

Indian takeout from the Taj Mahal on Main Street in Frodsham, Cheshire, must include chicken khorma and lamb phall, and then beer from Helter Skelter, a CAMRA pub just around the corner on Church Street.

  16. Alexia Moore Says:

I forgot about the drinks, can I add to my request? Before the meal: Chai tea authentic style brewed on the stove in a big pot with milk and honey. I want at least 3 rounds with friends with music and interesting conversation. During the meal (cuz it’s german): a hearty dark stout. Then a bit later after it’s digested (assuming we haven’t died yet): chinaco anejo tequila straight served to the brim in a brandy sifter. More interesting conversation and live music.

  17. Billy Says:

Caesar salad with homemade dressing, lobster bisque, and chicken sorrentino.

For dessert I’d like chocolate lava cake and a stay of execution…

  18. Natalie Ford Says:

Well, if it is my last meal on earth, I assume that I am about to die (as opposed to space travel or somesuch) and so I would eat all of the foods that I love but that make me ill due to food intolerances (IBS). Ice cream. Dairy milk chocolate. Anchovy, mushroom and pepperami pizza with extra three cheeses (cheddar, mmmmmmmmm). Basically all of the dairy and wheat foods that I have to avoid if I do not want to get a very upset gut within a few hours!

  19. Joe Philipson Says:

Sushi, lots and lots of sushi, and an In-N-Out Burger :-)

  20. Steven Clark Says:

I’m not sure I’d have much of an appetite but I’d say after my roast beef and three veg I’d like some nice little crackers with opium tar on them and maybe a little bit of straight malt whiskey flown in from Scotland, you know one of those small distilleries you can’t find their wares outside the local area (yum). Then to be honest I’d probably be numb and not care.

Come to think of that we could probably simplify that down to about 8 fried dim sims and the whiskey :)

  21. Aaron Dragushan Says:

Hmmm, last meal on earth huh? I would present myself at any Roy’s restaurant in Hawaii and put myself in the chef’s hands.

  22. Mik Says:

Rocco’s on Broadway is my current favorite.

    yummmmmm……

  23. imelda Says:

I huge plate of hummus, tabouli, & baba ganoush with pita bread!

  24. Ben Buchanan Says:

How to choose? I’m going to take the scenario as the world is about to end…

I guess I’d want all my friends to join me eating steaks as big as our heads, beer battered chips as big as planks and drinking pints of fine beer.

Or maybe marinated venison strip loin medallions with cumberland sauce, the way my dad cooks it, back home with my family.

Or maybe transport me back in time to my favourite cafe during uni, to have their penne alla bascaiolla (sp???) followed by coffee and their five-flavour gelati cones.

Or maybe my girl and I would have a big breakfast with every last conceivable extra and side, fresh juice and just keep the lattes coming.

  25. Tomas Caspers Says:

A Bacon Cheeseburger from the Wrangler Cafe in Pinedale, Wyoming. And then I’ll die with my boots on.

  26. Rich Quick Says:

It’s gonna have to be a proper Cornish Pasty from Morris’

  27. alexmog Says:

ah, the perfect last meal is beyond pg13… but for food, i must have a fresh Uni before i die…

  28. Andrew Sullivan Says:

A small, Italian restaurant in Philly called Ava; the chicken alone is worth the plane ticket from Salt Lake.

  29. Robin Berjon Says:

A wok of duck magret, rice, coconut milk, curry paste, pineapple, and various veggies. Hmmmm. And a cigarette too.

  30. Aquarion Says:

I’d go for either the steak or a really properly made chicken supreme, depending on which side of the Atlantic I was…

  31. Rob Says:

Baked potatoes with fresh salad, feta cheese, olives and whatnot. A good ratatouille in a bowl of fried pasta. A good glass of wine to go with it.

  32. Leeky Says:

A big, American steak with gravy and mash. Followed by a generous slice of cheesecake.

And now, at a little after 11am, I am hungry.

  33. zuzu Says:

Thinking that I could eat until I popped I will go the whole hog. Oink oink oink.

    - Bruschetta made from vine ripened tomatoes, freshly picked basil and fine olive oil on crusty italian bread toasts

    - some antipasto with roast capsicum (red peppers to you americans), olives and other lovely nibblies

    - Risotto with feta, spinach and mushrooms

    - New York Cheesecake with a blackberry sauce

    - All accompanied with some fine Shiraz

Written while shoveling down fast food from you-don’t-wanna-know-where cause there was no time to feed the kids properly this evening.

  34. Sheila Says:

Start with a glass of bubbles
Good Australian Chardonnay with the meal

    - Starter: Spicy bean soup and home made bread and butter
    - Main: Pumpkin Gnocchi and creamy pasta sauce with a rocket, tomato salad
    - Pudding: Pavlova with dollop of vanilla ice-cream
    - Mixed cheese platter from a selection from Neal’s Yard Dairy, Borough Market
    - Finish up with shortbread biscuits and cappuccino

I feel a trip to Marks and Spencer Food Hall is now required 

  35. Dan Brickley Says:

    Fugu…

  36. Skrim Says:

    Finnbiff.

  37. Todd Dietrich Says:

A cheesesteak from Charles’ in Whitehall.

  38. Jason T. Says:

My grandmother’s fried chicken, my mother’s macaroni & cheese, biscuits, gravy, yams and greens. For dessert, banana pudding.

  39. Joe Lewis Says:

A big fat slice of pepperoni pizza (from Blondie’s) and a pint of hoppy northwest-style pale ale, both of which are off my GF diet…

  40. Eric DeLabar Says:

Prime Rib, rare, with horseradish and chive sauce; green bean casserole, Emeril Lagasse-style mashed potatoes, and bottle of the best merlot available. For dessert, PA-dutch-style apple dumplings.

  41. Jonathan Says:

A pizza from my favorite Italian Restaurant, located in the city I moved away from 3 years ago (God I miss that pizza).

  42. Deon Says:

It would have to be a grilled Steak, just under well done with barbecue chicken breasts, collard greens and baked mac and cheese, maybe a slice of sweet potato pie all like Grandma used to make for Sunday dinner.

  43. LisaMac Says:

I’m easy. Mom’s homemade tuna casserole, chocolate cake with white icing and a coke.

  44. Lillian Says:

No time for food. I’m too busy saving the world. If I live through it, I’ll take a big piece of cheesecake later. If I don’t, I won’t need it anyway.

I must admit, I’m hungry now after reading all these responses.

  45. Sheldon Kotyk Says:

Steak, Alaskan Crab Legs, Lobster Tail, Prawns, with some Fettuccine Alfredo and Caesar Salad on the side.

    Raspberry Coca~Cola

    Pineapple with Caramel Dip

    Peanut Buster Parfait

Not that I’ve thought about this before.

  46. George Says:

A proper sit-down Southern soul food dinner, fit to bust your best vest buttons. :-)

  47. Dan Schulz Says:

Grilled venison (and it better be cooked properly too) with fresh vegetables, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes and a good wine (which is odd, given I don’t drink), with some fresh calamari and a ceasar salad for an appetizer topped off with a full bowl of sherbert (and I don’t mean a small bowl either).

Hey, if it’s going to be my last meal on earth, it better be good, right?

The only question being then (remember, I don’t drink), what wine would you recommend to go with it? Molly? Anyone? Bueller?

  48. Laurel Papworth Says:

Well, I wouldn’t care about the diet anymore so probably hot cinnamon doughnuts and Splice icecream. Or maybe a cake with a knife baked into it? Better make that a gun. Though it would almost be worth knowing it was your last night on earth, so you could eat what you wanted. Imagine being really good and never eating a naughty thing again and then - being run down by a bus! o.O.

BTW the Dr Jakob Nielsen rule is 90:9:1 - 1% initiate (ask the question), 9% respond (answer) and 90% lurk (read only). So I wonder if asking 500 people actually means 500 asked or 500 answered? Cos that would be a lot of people asked to get 9% answering… Anyway, I believe that rule is out of date now - people are more confident in creating and responding online. Ignore my gibberings. :)

  49. Dave Says:

Ma Pa Dofu… the hottest dish I’ve ever tasted, something that would make me cry and get a runny nose so I could properly morn and be joyful at the same time.

  50. Dave Vogt Says:

A burger, medium rare, with everything, from Cruiser’s in PVB, FL.

  51. Bryan Davis Says:

A good old fashioned English Sunday roast! Roast beef, roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding, veg, gravy… Mmmmmmmm….

Right, off to the pub to pretend it’s my last meal!!

  52. melissa Says:

A local coastal restaurant called Meza Mare has an incredible Chicken Ravolio with Gorganzola served with a spinich, cranberries, walnut salad servered with a sherry vinagerette dressing and fresh french bread/olive oil and a fine bottle of Susan Balboa Malbec. Hmmmmmm….

Can’t get much better than that, honestly :)

  53. Ash Says:

A good sandwich. Nothing can beat that. Salad, meat, cheese, egg… It would naturally have to be at least as thick as it was wide, but nevertheless between two slices of bread.

  54. Ross Bruniges Says:

I would like to eat myself. I think my kidneys and liver have been marinated very well over the years and could prove rather tasty……

  55. Mark Stephenson Says:

I would have liked to eat every type of dessert that has ever been invented but unfortunately I’m feeling ill after picturing Ross eating himself.

  56. Rob Hofker Says:

There are so many good things that I have tasted through the years and many may have tasted so well because of ambience. But still, it being the final meal, I would like to try all these again and again and again.
    - sugar loaf made by my Great Aunt
    - fish sticks. spinach and puree made by my father
    - the lovely chicken my mother used to make, with the applesauce
    - the home made fries and apple sauce from my grandmother
    - those wonderfull meals we had at our students house (NOT thos in the cafetaria!)
    - the endless Wiener Schnitzels and Sacher Torte in Austria
    - the Austrian beer
    - those exclusive meals I had with some of my special customers
    - those lovely meals I had with my wife and kids
    - and many many more….

I would probably beat Death by dying first. ;-)

  57. Jesse Says:

There is a great little place up in Beverly, MA called Tryst. I had the most devastating hanger steak, with asparagus and mash. Paired with a leathery gigondas and followed up with the house made limoncello and their phenomenal cheesecake. That meal has been very difficult to defeat.

Then, I’d give the executioner a noogie. Or Melvin Death, whichever.

  58. @ster Says:

    Chicken would be fine…

  59. Rick Silletti Says:

Salmon, Sweet potato fries - a second helping of salmon. I do love dares!

  60. TimCost Says:

pan fried (hand breaded) chicken fried steak, home made cream gravy, mashed potatoes, whole kernel corn with lots of butter and a little chili powder, brown and serve rolls, a gallon of ice cold dr. Pepper and a big slice of lemon pie for desert.

  61. Stephanie Says:

I don’t know what I’d want the meal to be but desert would have to be chocolate mouse with whip cream, mint chocolate chip ice cream and some fresh strawberries.

  62. Steve Woods Says:

I’d have an all you can eat chinese buffet, that way I’d never finish and therefore live indefinitely … at least until the cholestorol got me :P

  63. Steve Woods Says:

Or, a huge apple-crumble covered in custard… ah man, i need to go home :D

  64. annegret Says:

    mcdonalds (pommes and burger) :)

  65. Michael Says:

Traditional Downeast clam bake: two lobsters, a bucket of steamed clams, corn on the cob, slaw, a little potato salad, washed down with lots of Geary’s Pale Ale and followed by a couple of whoopie pies. Ah, kill me now.

  66. TeD`t00 Says:

Maybe one big PIZZA with becon and cheese and then one cake like this one http://fruittart.files.wordpress.com/2007/04/lemon-cake.jpg

    :D :D

  67. Jan Says:

    Sashimi, lots of them!

  68. bza Says:

Lavacake is the only accceptable last-meal!

  69. Gruven_Reuven Says:

My last meal on earth…. I’d have to opt for the Kosher meal.

  70. Diane Says:

A platter of chewy, crust breads, cheeses and a selection of red wines.

  71. william foos Says:

Subway- 2ft. long, Melted shredded cheese on Italian bread, with tuna, lettuce, tomato, extra mayo, and extra bacon! mmmmm mmmm

  72. Natalie Says:

I’d have my aunt Darlene’s broccoli casserole, B. Smith’s chicken and waffles, my grandmother’s pound cake, and top it all off with a massive bowl of Häagen-Dazs Banana Split ice cream.

more responses in the comments on the post at my blog:
    http://blkdykegoddess.livejournal.com/107277.html

  73. Toolmannet Says:

    chicken Shawarma

  74. Andy Says:

Boy Molly, I dunno…Maybe chicken curry at Sakuntala’s Indian Restaurant in Bloomsburg PA, followed by “pounded chicken” (ie tenderized, and with lemon) by my mom, then let’s see, my husband’s Cajun chicken, grandfather’s goulash, Sauza tequila and mint chocolate-chip ice cream to finish.

Ok, now I feel slightly ill thinking about that particular combo…

  75. Tercüme bürosu Says:

A small, Italian restaurant in Philly called Ava; the chicken alone is worth the plane ticket from Salt Lake…

  76. Philey Says:
