Train the Trainer Program

I’ve written a lot about HTML and CSS lately, and now I want to do not say.

Every other weekend I’m in the U.S. from this September ’til next and I will offer a FREE two day course to six (6) educators each available weekend, with dates to be announced following my schedule.

Here’s the deal: You demonstrate to me that you will take your knowledge forward to other educators, students, trainers and evangelists who can and will talk to their students and/or companies about standards. This is a MUST. I only will train people for FREE who can prove they are in education, technology training, or work with a company where they can provide in-depth training for their teams.

You come to me. I already travel a lot, so this is good for me. You pay nothing to me, only your travel expenses. I will teach HTML, XHTML and CSS technology principles. I will also offer project management ideas and provide for code reviews and one-on-one time.

I will teach anyone who will teach others whatever it is that I know, for free, for a year. What do you say? If you like the idea, post here and we shall work together to put dates to the plan.

I also challenge my colleagues to do the same formally.

Who’s ready?

  1. Dan Rubin Says:

I love this idea, Molly, and I’m going to spread the word as much as I can — there are folks who *need* to take advantage of this…

  2. Jason Garber Says:

Wow, very cool. Most gracious of you, Molly!

  3. Patrick Haney Says:

Rock on. A fantastic idea that will definitely help spread the word of good practice in design and code. Props to you for making the offer, Molly.

  4. Chris Casciano Says:

What a wonderful idea Molly. I will certainly keep my eyes and ears open for people who could benefit

  5. carmelyne Says:

See my email was right on. You’re a rock star! Have a good vacation.

  6. Wayne Batchelder Says:

I already promote standards at our design college, but would love the opportunity to grow further and learn from you directly!

  7. marc nothrop Says:

I’m on the wrong continent to benefit, but I must just say ‘bravo’ — now that’s giving back!

  8. Cindy Li Says:

Molly, I may know of an educator that would love to attend. :D Maybe I can help somehow expanding design knowledge too?

  9. Kathy C. Says:

Same as Marc, I’m too far, but I applaud the initiative, and envy the lucky chosen few who will become Molly diciples ! :D

  10. Ross Bruniges Says:

Love the idea! I have been trying to do the same here at my University (where I work and no one else seems to care) but no one is interested :

  11. Accessify: latest news / Learn to Teach for Free Says:

[…] Learn to Teach for Free I simply have to draw attention to an idea that Molly has come up with and posted about on her site today. She’s offering to teach 6 people at a time on a 2-day training session at her place, and all free of charge. Naturally the topic is standards (I know this is an accessibility site, but it’s still relevant), but ther are conditions to this great offer: […]

  12. Rose Pruyne Says:

Molly, we would love to have you at Penn State for a couple of days. We have a very active Web Standards group here, and we would welcome you!

  13. Rose Pruyne Says:

P.S. I am also spreading the word of your offer re traveling to YOU. But … maybe in the future sometime you’ll be able to come to beautiful central Pennsylvania. You are always welcome.

  14. Virginia Says:

Beautiful idea, Molly. Congratulations on coming up with a plan to improve the world and spread good karma!

  15. Jeff Says:

What a great idea… Since I work at a university this would be ideal if I could get there, now if I only had a travel budget! All the books I read to stay up to date I pay for out of my own pocket. I do the best with what I have but I am constantly amazed at how afraid of change educators in general are. I constantly get the “I’ve been doing it this way for ten years, and it still works, so why change” mantra all the time.

  16. Stephanie Sullivan Says:

Obviously, I’m doing training and speaking already and am all into spreading the web standards gospel… but I’d love to have a personal critique session with you, Mols. :) There’s always more growth to be had… For personal reasons, I’ll be spending time in PHX here and there, so Tuscon is a hop, skip and a jump… and I’m pretty springy!
Get well… and have a cuppa on me!
    Stef.

  17. jkiel Says:

I would also love to take you up on this, and I’m just north of you (SLC)… I teach beginning web design for the Dept. of Communication as I work on my own grad courses. Learning the most effective methods in teaching standards et al is a VERY attractive opportunity! (and if Steph was there too, WOW!)

  18. Melianor Says:

Now when are you getting on your World Tour to Europe again? :)

  19. Aaron Gustafson Says:

It’s funny, I was talking with Ms. Jen about that idea, but in reverse. She wanted to gather some folks to fly me out to LA to work one-on-one with them, which I would do for the flight and a place to stay. I was thinking about opening it up to more folks, but I see where it could become somewhat difficult to manage all the travel, especially as my Sumer and Fall is getting more and more congested. I really like the idea of basing it somewhere, great thinking as usual Molly. And, of course, if you ever want some company, I’d love to co-teach with you again, just gimmie the word.

  20. Chaz Chumley Says:

Being an instructor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and an author at CommunityMX this would be a great opportunity to not only learn but to pass the knowledge to my students and those who visit CommunityMX. Also only being a couple of hours away makes this a steal. I applaud you for giving back to the community. Sign me up.

  21. Gareth Says:

Right. Work out how to come all that way to see you. We’re just getting our training bits set up and this would be a great. You are far too generous you know.

  22. Paul Boag Says:

That is awesome Molly! Good for you. You have made me feel quite guilty that I am not willing to do the same. I would like to claim I am too busy but if you can find time to do it I dont have a leg to stand on. You’re a hero.

  23. Mik Says:

    hon, I need this!

  24. Mathias Hellquist Says:

Hehe, great idea!! Totally bonkers, but completely brilliant. Now I wish I was in the US instead of London!! :)

  25. Ryan Barr Says:

W00t to Molly. W00t W00t. Anyway, we’ll keep in touch.

  26. Laura Says:

If you (or similarly motivated colleagues) need any virtual administrative help, I’d be happy to donate. As a novice designer I’d love to see your offer — and also your challenge to colleagues — take flight. I look forward to attending classes that generate from this!

  27. Martha Retallick Says:

Hello from a fellow Tucsonan! I can personally attest to the quality of Molly’s teaching, having attended several of her seminars.

So, hint to Molly: Don’t forget us hometown folks. We’ll come out to hear you, even on a day like today. (It’s about 105 degrees outside. Going to get hotter too.)

  28. Anthony Says:

Not to beat a dead horse here but this is wonderful.

Too bad most of my web courses at the New School [in NYC] are no longer offered. I still work with many of my former students outside of the classroom, is spreading the gospel to them enough for me to come out?

  29. thacker Says:

Again, Holzschlag, you have put your money where your mouth is, so to speak. You are one ballsy lady and that is a good thing.

Given any thought to offering e-Learning? It wouldn’t have to be extensive, just the basics - enough to get someone’s feet wet and get them motivated.

Here I am trying to give away more of your time and money. You may kick me.

  30. Molly Says:

No, you are all awesome. So many have offered to help or do similar things, I think we’re going to end up having a great time and this may just help. Eric Eggert just announced he’ll do the same for Germany, Austria and Switzerland: http://yatil.de/Weblog/webdesign-kurse-kostenlos

This is just too cool. This is the kind of viral thing I want to catch! :) :) :)

    HappyMols

  31. Eric Eggert Says:

Thanks for linking Molly. I’ve got something like that in my mind like forever. Now I have to wait if there’s actually an interest in such a program in German speaking countries.

There seems to be more enthusiasm about this in North America than here in Europe. And of course I haven’t nearly the reputation you have. But hey, it’s free so take the opportunity :)

  32. thacker Says:

    Holzschlag–

As usual, you get my single and only brain cell working overtime.

The focus of your thrust is towards developers.

Business and Web site owners should be brought into the fold, also. This includes local governments and their Web content.

One area that I am mulling in my mind is that any developer/designer, within their local geographic area, can approach their local newspaper, business publication, chamber of commerce, et al and get their interest in publishing an article or series of articles on the Web and benefits of standards.

Do not for a moment think that because “standards” is a “better mousetrap” that the world will beat a path to its door. The market has to perceive a definitive need for a “better mousetrap”.

These reasons generally turn on basic issues of solutions to perceived problems, competitive advantages/pressures and monetary reasons.

With that focus in mind, presentation needs to include the unique “selling features” of its advantages based upon real-life and hardcore examples. Toss out the geek-speak.

There are some self-serving advantages to the local developer who undertakes this — positioning themselves in their local market as the expert. But do not approach it from that perspective. Take the high road — that your motivation and passion is to improve the quality of Internet Communication for everyone within your community and thus help to improve upon the quality of their lives.

Anyway, these are just random thoughts from a single brain cell.

  34. Mark Hiatt Says:

Molly, you gotta know that I am interested in a deal like this. I can trace a direct line from our Saturday morning HTML classes on MSN a (* Cough! *) dozen years ago, to the mighty, standards-compliant university pages we have, today. I’m in front of dozens of people every month, trying to continue all of that, and fighting the Good Fight for standards compliance.

How many seeds are in an apple? And how many apples are in a seed? Let’s do this one, Molly!

  35. F. Howard Says:

Molly, I commend you for this if it’s for real. Whatever happened to the free classes you offered to John Dvorak? Whatever happened to your offer to train folks who came down and helped you re-model your house? I would like to recommend several folks to you if I’m sure there’s no “catch.”

  36. Molly Says:

Mr. Dvorak put me off until I gave up. The offer still stands tho!

These are of course for real. My god, I may be imperfect but I think after a track record of all these years people would realize that if I’m giving it a full year, and I’m doing so much better now, well . . . one thing I’ve learned is one person cannot please everyone.

I sat down this afternoon on my beautiful patio in Cannes and sketched out the curriculum and began to work on the schedule. I’ll post those very soon.

This is very exciting to me.

  37. F. Howard Says:

    Excellent!

  38. Bob Simonette Says:

    Molly

I’m not sure what happened, I posted this yesterday but it did not show up.

We here in the Web Design & Development program at Texas State Technical College in Waco are committed to teach, and promote Web standards. As an Instructor I would love to take advantage of this opportunity. The best time for me would be in the spring. Count me in.

  39. Ryan Parr Says:

I work for an Interactive Agency in Portland, OR. My title is Front-End Architect, yes I know, but it’s just a title. I’m heavily involved with web standards and on a daily basis educate our team and peers in the Portland area. I’ve had the opportunity to speak to students at Portland Art Institute and groups at Portland State University. I would love to continue to educate web developers, designers and clients about the value of web standards. I’m available anytime.

    Thank you,

    Ryan

  40. Robert Nyman Says:

Molly, I think it’s a great initiative, and something more people should do!
Shameless link here, but it’s somewhat like what I’m trying to achieve with Geek Meet. Spread the word and knowledge to people, who will in turn continue to do so themselves.

Like open source, but in real life! :-)

  41. Mitzy Says:

    Hi Molly,
Two educators/web designers from Colorado would love to take you up on your offer! You may remember my friend, Jill, who had some excellent one-on-one instruction time with you almost 2 years ago at Neil’s penthouse suite during a Geek cruise. We’d like to join you in Tucson some time during January-March, depending on your schedule. Thanks for the generous offer. Mitzy

  47. Frank Giordano Says:

I would love the opportunity to learn from a master. I have been in the training and education business for over 15 years now, so I guess I’m hooked. Over that time I’ve worn the instructor, designer, project manager, and Dept. Mgr hats. I enjoyed each position when I found those who were willing to listen and learn something from those who have gone before them. I love helping other discover their true potential.

I am working with an alternative school for inner-city teenagers who for whatever reason have not succeeded in public school. I would like to institute a basic Web design program for these kids, to offer them a path to professional success. I have some knowledge in this area, though mine pales compared to yours. If you would take me on as a student, I can assure you dozens — and ultimately hundreds — of young people would benefit.

In case you are ever in this region — within hundreds of miles of me — and would take me on, I am in New Jersey.
