The Online Tribe : Three Commitments

Lately, things have been so busy, and so difficult in many ways.

I still believe in my online tribe. Are you with me? Here are my commitments:

  1. I will not give up.
  2. I will not stop blogging.
  3. I made mistakes and I shall steady on.

Are you with me? I need you. Claim your truth in comments below.

Mistooks are a fact of life. It’s in our approach to them where we either become discouraged or not.

I’ve made so many mistakes, some quite serious personal ones, I’ve lost count. But I keep on. That there isn’t any real alternative is by the by. The trick is to say “Oops. I’ll learn from that one.” And not expecting the lesson to be apparent immediately! Sometimes it can take a long time, years in fact, before you can look at a situation and say “Now I get it!”

I used to dwell on some of my mistakes, even the minor ones. It took awhile, but I now say “oh well” and move on. Thinking about our past mistakes doesn’t do much for “your” self-confidence.

Don’t rush life, expect yourself to be perfect, and not make mistakes. We all do those things, it helps define us as people. But we can also make life an adventure, because it is, really. And every adventure has its share of setbacks and achievements. But the achievements define the adventure.

There’s a lot to be said for blogging; I write because I’ve got no other choice. I simply can’t “not write” (if you’ll excuse the double-negative!). It’s a great outlet for explaining things to yourself. My approach is to write for myself, and if anyone else reads it, great. (I reject the typical blogging advice of “write what your audience wants to read. I don’t particularly care what they want to read!)

It all depends on if blogging is a burden or a pleasure. It doesn’t have to be a static ‘emotion’ (for wont of a better word), either. There’s nothing compelling you to love blogging or dislike it as a constant. (If you’re blogging for professional reasons, there’s another aspect to consider, but that’s beyond the scope of what I’m saying here.)

Self-expression is hard, and it’s even harder if we impose the burden of doing it “well”. Mainly because no one can define “well”; we know it when we see it, basically. Persistence pays, though.

Keep at it, whatever “it” is. Life is an adventure (as I’ve said), mistakes happen, and blogging sometimes helps explain that adventure to ourselves. :-)

Still with you and no plans of going anywhere. You are an inspiration in many ways. Brave, honest, open, AND a web standards hero! Sometimes those things will get you into trouble, but mostly they make the world a better place. More human. Less edited. More honest. All with 25% cleaner code than before :)

  12. Delbert says:

Molly – you rock! Let’s see you rise above those that tried to use you to further their own careers. You’ll still be a respected member of the technorati when they’re back designing crappy little sites for the local hotel – oh wait, they already are! :)

  13. Kim Nylander says:

    Molly,
A while back you spoke at InterLab on CSS and Web styles. It was fantastic meeting you there and being able to use some of your suggestions on my own sites.
You’ve been an inspiration to many, so maybe we can offer the same type of support you’ve shown the rest of us.

  14. Sometimes it’s hard. But always keep on!

  15. Gify emoty says:
