Creativity Jam Session: Write Your Own Web Dev Job Advert

Once again I have stumbled across a rather unrealistic job description for a web developer/designer. Apparently, one must have “expert level” skills in ALL of the following: Perl, PHP, ASP, .NET, HTML, CSS, RSS, ATOM, JavaScript, Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator, graphic user interface design as well as interaction design. The applicant must have at least five years practical experience, and a computer science degree (note, not a design degree) is a “plus.”

The salary? 50,000 USD per year with benefits. That’s about 25,000 GBP per year.

If one has all those skills at expert level for at least five years and has a good attitude in the workplace, he or she is truly worth a heck of a lot more money than that. I’m getting really frustrated with employer ads that throw as many possible skills into the ad and assume one potential employee can fill the job at expert level. What’s more, precious few people writing up these job descriptions have any reasonable understanding of what it takes to be a true web professional.

The creative task? Write up an advertisement as if you were the employer and you, the perfect match. What does the ad require, and what do you see as fair equivalent compensation for your skillset?

Who knows, maybe we can help potential employers understand just what it takes to be a true professional in this industry.

that’s a wish list, not a requirements list. a lot of companies “require” their applicants to have 5011 skills, but the one they hire will have about three of those skills, will use only two of them on a day-to-day basis — and she/he will be a journalism major.

a more realistic description (for the atlanta area) might read:

“Applicant must have between two and five years experience in front-end development. You must have strong HTML and CSS development skills, and know enough JavaScript to fake it. A scripting language such as PHP or ASP is a nice bonus if you’ve got it, but isn’t required. Salary is commesurate with skillset and experience, but will be at least $55K.”

and if she/he has those PHP or ASP skills, she/he won’t be doing much more than modifying form-to-email scripts.

Hey Molly- my 60th birthday today. ha. the great thing is that i feel less and less peer pressure as i get older. anyway. My step son in law that is a major person at ClearChannel worked his way up in all of the things you mention on his own. from janitor in a podunk radio station to now major software and hardware expert with that company- he learned everything- the long hard way- yet they have almost thrown him over time and time again for someone with no practical experience but the papers only- NO one it seems wants to pay for REAL knowledge or experience- I learned that in Medicine- take care of the people in need and the Ivory Tower group look down on you. it seems that is true also in the Pie IN the Sky folks that look for Professionals in Your Fields-If they had to do it , they would freak- they just want quality for nothing. sorry to go on - blessings Ray

  3. Matt Robin Says:

It suppose it depends what qualifies as ‘expert level’ - but for the skills you mention, at ‘expert level’ in the UK - I’d really expect them to be advertising for 80,000-70,000 USD / 40,000 - 35,000 GBP per year. If the same role is (labelled) as ‘Web Master/Senior Web Designer - then I’d expect 100,000 - 80,000 USD or 50,000 - 40,000 GBP. What a difference ‘labelling’ makes!

  4. Bob Says:

A job posting in 1997 asked for 3 years of experience in ASP! (I don’t remember which site it was mentioned on)

And now check the release date of the first version of ASP in Wikipedia.

The old adage applies; pay peanuts and you get monkeys.

  7. Keith Burgin Says:

“Applicant must have 3 years experience in HTML, CSS, and Javascript. PHP and MySQL experience a plus. More important is at least 2 years experience dealing on a personal level with self-important, book-educated middlee management dolts who don’t understand the technology and will throw unreasonable demands at you on a daily basis.

Compensation will be based upon combination of skill and patience.”

    >> Blimey, what a list of requirements! I thought Microsoft paid more than that!!

I hate you! How dare you defame Microsoft like that! You should be grateful for all great things they do. (j/k)

  10. Mortal Says:

There’s still one thing that concerns me - if all companies require at least 2 years of experience in what they’re working with, how is anyone ever gonna get 2 years of experience?
I’m still young, so I don’t know exactly how it works out yet.

  11. Tom Jackson Says:

The other possibility is that they already have that employee, s/he’s here on a work permit, and they’re trying to demonstrate to the government that they can’t find an American to do the work and that the employee’s visa should therefore be renewed. So they demand expert knowledge of everything the employee knows a little about, offer insanely low pay, get no response, et voila.

  12. Sarven Capadisli Says:

Are you aware of the differences between HTML and XHTML?

    Are you familiar with IRC?

Do you understand how HTTP works?

Are you able to write a script (without using the builtin functions of the language of your choice) to sort a list of elements and then to search for an element in that list?

How would you go about to reach a site`s target audience? (hints: colour theory, seo, usability, accessibility, typography …)

    -

If you can answer some of these questions at ease, please contact us with your portfolio. Salary is negotiable based on your knowledge and experience.

  13. Montoya Says:

    Ok, I’ll try:

“Applicant must have 20 years of practical experience.”

    Pwned :)

  14. Scott Says:

This is a filtering reaction to employees also overstating their qualifications I believe as well. Who started it?? I think the ignorant agencies personally, but someone has to start to make things more realistic again.

One funny thing that always frustrates me that will never change. Most American jobs, and also employers in Australia that are American companies, demand a university degree even if it is not related to your profession.

I know many extremely talented people in the industry that have never gone to university due to the lack of relevance any degree would provide for them and not spending the 4+ years in school, they now have way more experience than their degree waving colleagues would have.

But you can forget applying to Google, etc.

  15. G Evans Says:

My favorite was a job spec that required, otherwise don’t try, 2 years minimum customer support experience of Windows 2000. A little paraphrased but that was the meaning of it. Needless to say, that was in 1999.

    :)

  16. Jordan Says:

Molly, I can’t thank you ardently enough for bringing this up. As a poor university student, I’ve been terrified of applying for jobs because they all published ads like that—partly in case I got laughed out of the interview, and partly out of fear as to whether they would expect me to perform brain surgery with chopsticks. They all seem to come from variations on the same template:

“Must have at least [frightening number of] years experience working with [inordinately broad range of specialisations]. [Guru-level] knowledge in [every specification/software package/OS you’ve ever heard of, and some you haven’t] essential. Familiarity with [ultra-specific niche] a plus. Salary [janitorial/negotiable], subject to experience.”

(That last bit is a kicker. Does that mean that unless I know the intimate proclivities of every single thing listed in the ad, they’ll want to pay me less? That’s how I read it!)

Only very recently did I discover that these lists of “requirements” are actually fantasies, often produced by someone quite clueless about the position as a description of their “dream applicant”. Like Scott said, it’s probably a reaction against people inflating their skills, but all they manage to do is dissuade naive but honest applicants like myself. If I had known that they were (let’s face it) lying about what the position required, I might have been more willing to apply. As a result, I spent last year earning less than some people get for stacking shelves (about £15K) to be a brain trust for a small company.

So please, people: help Molly out here! Expose the truth so that guys like me have some idea of how to translate these falsehoods!

(PS: What kind of markup can we use on your comment forms?)

  17. Steven Clark Says:

    Hi Molly,
I’m with you on this one entirely, its a constant bane to see these ads in the paper. Maybe the people who actually pull these jobs might drop by and say hello and give us some low-down on what their skills really are which landed them their work.

Needless to say its also probably counter-productive putting all of those skills on the advertisement - I for one look at it and say bugger don’t know ASP for the life of me and Illustrator either. Then skip the page.

Perhaps more realistic advertisements written by people who want to explain what it is you have to do for the position instead of writing wishlists would be more effective. But its blown me away for years how much companies expect in their ads.

  18. Steven Clark Says:

Oh yeah, Scott, don’t get me started on the people who have fluffed resumes - hello world does not entitle someone to say they can program in any language.

Best advice for employers - at interviews chuck over a notepad and pen and ask for some simple programming to see if they can at least do the basics. Nothing tricky though.

  19. Richard Conyard Says:

For our web developers rather than a list of skills we tend to ask them to undertake a quick 20 minute test along the lines of:

Define the key data structures and processes involved allowing a florist to take orders online.

Describe the structures of an n-tier web application with brief information / product examples for each tier, enhancements and potential draw backs. Please refer to technologies and techniques per tier with examples

In the technology of your choice select a page from your answer to question 1 and provide brief code.

The questions are left pretty open and there isn’t one correct answer (although there are plenty of wrong ones). This way it allows us to assess the individual on their approach to the questions as well as the answers they give.

In regards to the above requirement for a computer science degree, any company wanting that in a web developer (and why would you need one as a designer), IMHO hasn’t a clue of how to hire (I’m not bitter, I have a BSc in Computer Science). The quality of teaching seems to vary so much from establishment to establishment with BSc and MSc computer science courses they again IMHO are only good to get you your first interview and can subsequently be used for toilet paper.

  20. WD Milner Says:

Yes, small tests for basic skills can be much better that massive requiremetns lists. The local community access network was hiring a new technician and in addition to a basic interview they were asked to write a one page proposal for the equiment for a new site and a basic network diagram of same.

You wouldn’t believe some of the results. It did reveal one thing though - technicians are better at architecture than writing proposals *grin*

  21. Jessica Says:

Funnily enough, my boyfriend and I both completed computer science degrees, he is now primarily a web designer through passion and self education, and won that place over B. Graphic Design graduates because they just couldn’t apply what they knew in the required setting. I do mostly programming but more and more I am asked to take on our website and “design” issues. I’m comfortable with the coding of the design and I’m aware of functionality requirements for design so that I work can with the actual designers. We both work in small companies where you need to be able to help out to fill gaps, but when designing for the web our Comp Sci degrees have been invaluable for interfacing with others. Not to say that Comp Sci degrees are or should be required for design but there are many valuable lessons that can be applied and hopefully make us both a little more valuable.

  22. Ben Buchanan Says:

“Need a good frontend guy, able to build in XHTML+CSS and implement Javascript even if not able to write it. Need to understand what XML/Atom/RSS feeds are and why they’re useful. Knowlege of accessibility and usability should go without saying. Not required to touch Flash with a barge pole. You don’t need to know how to do the backend/server side heavy lifting, but you really should have an appreciation for what they’re doing. Same goes for the designers. By the way, are you trying to convince us to implement microformats during the interview?”

OK so I made that last bit up. It wasn’t microformats, it was something else ;)

  23. pattyb Says:

Another thing that burns me is the lack of distinction between Web Design and Web Coding/Programming. Hats off to those of you who have graphic design *and* programming skills, but you are the exception to the rule. Many job postings require both.

The major university that employs me recently re-wrote all existing job titles to be more in sync with the private sector, a very painful process that took several years. After all was said and done my title became “Web Designer/Administrator Intermediate” even though I have no graphic design skills whatsoever. Very few people understand this distinction.

  24. Mik Says:

Here are some slightly reworded ads from the Tucson Weekly:

LLC ISO other developers for clean code. I like being spanked, men in uniform. Anything goes; let’s play.

Not seeking to be the teacher, nor single guys, nor wannabes. Would like friends in and out of the workplace. We may not be Ken & Barbie, but we are safe, sable, and for real.

a strong, patient developer who has the persistence and skill to get me where I want to go even if it takes hours. Must be ready to go the long distance and like the smell of sweat. Chest hair a bonus

    Happy Monday!

  25. Rich Quick Says:

“A job posting in 1997 asked for 3 years of experience in ASP!”

That’s nothing. I saw job advert asking for 5 years’ experience with WAP and WML about a week after the first WAP phone was released in the UK.

  26. Niko Neugebauer Says:

A few days ago, i saw a kind of a similar announcement at Stylegala. I have even referred to the old joke, about a soldier, that if a programmer would be a soldier, then you would expect him to: know how to shoot, to swim, to drive a any tank since WW2, fly a helicopter, be a perfect pilot for the most of the aircraft fighters, experienced bomber, admiral of the fleet, commander of a submarine and of course be a good cook. =O)

It is more then ridiculous to expect everything from one person. No one is that good, and i think those advertisements saying a lot about those people who publish them - don’t believe they are that good at the marketing and human resources sciences.

Sarven, i am thinking about your proposal =OP Actually i would say, that anyone from programming switching to the web would be relatively easy fulfill those requirements.

I agree with Scott about university education, i happened to know a … “famous company” architect who has dropped out of the university, this guy is fantastic in programming, but if he would not have started working around 20 years ago, he would be no one nowhere… =O(

One should look out for people with an open mind, ready to learn and adapt them self to the ever changing state of technology progress. One could be a GOD-like in some technology, but in a 5 years without learning new stuff he will be nothing but a waste of time.

  27. Jeff L Says:

I hate those job descriptions. One of the things that attracted me to my current company (even though they recruited me) was their job reqs.

… responsible for developing the presentation layer of both websites and complex user interfaces. Do you possess the necessary skills to code complex interfaces by hand, using XHTML, JavaScript and cutting edge CSS layout techniques? Do you wince at the thought of a WYSIWYG editor touching your code? If so, this position may be for you.

and the requirements are probably a bit lenient if anything. I’ve been doing websites for 10 years - they only look for a few years experience.

I came across a job posting the other day however that really made me look twice.

You must have three years of solid experience working on client projects. You need to possess fair design experience in interface design and interactive development. You must have experience in Photoshop and Illustrator, as well as, knowledge of HTML and DHTML. This position requires heavy coding in PHP. Knowledge of AJAX, Java, etc. is all a huge plus.

The pay? Starting at only $28k USD.

  28. Ms. Jen Says:

Well… now… that I am on the job market after finishing my masteres.degree.in.computer.science.which.is.funny.given.that.my.bachelors.is.in.graphic.design.hahaha.life.takes.strange.turns….

Anywhooo, one of the things that I have been wondering lately is what is the differentiation between a web designer vs. User Interface Designer and web developer vs Programmer? I would rather label myself as a web designer and web developer, than label myself as UI Designer and Front End Developer. I know that I am not a programmer, I visit program-land as a tourist and am reasonably good at ordering from a menu and getting around but I can’t hold a existentialist discussion in programming… Nor am I an API developer.

It seems that the terminology and labels in tech-land changes more than the actual skills.

    Job Description:
Nice, lovely company that welcomes canines in the office is seeking an intelligent, enthusiastic generalist with 10 years of passion and experience in internet technologies and design to join a team that will make a difference in user experience of the web and mobile web.

    * Can code Javascript, PHP, and Ruby with references.
    * Experienced in Photoshop, allergic to Illustrator.
    * Thinks that XML is for machines, but can debug it along with Perl, PHP, and other code bits.
    * Sings advertisement songs from the 1970s and 1980s at 4pm after consuming diet coke and dark chocolate, which cheers up cubicle dwellers.
    * Loves all things mobile.

Here’s one that I just came across:

As our Web Developer, you are passionate about building innovative online experiences. Developing primarily on the front end and middle tier, you will work collaboratively to build new features and functionality for our platform, design and build scalable web-based applications, prototypes and ‘go-live’ features, and act as a subject matter expert on scripting capabilities and limitations. SKILLS & EXPERIENCE 1. 4 to 6 years of OO, Java, C#, and standards-based development. 2. Proficiency with HTML, CSS, ASP/JSP, JavaScript, DHTML, and XML. 3. Strong understanding of JSP, JDBC, Struts, Spring, Web Services (SOAP/REST), and other leading-edge web technologies. 4. J2EE, OR Mapping technologies (including JDO and Hibernate) and multi-threaded, distributed systems using Service Oriented Architectures. 5. Apache, MySQL, Ruby on Rails, REST, SOA, MVC designs. 6. Proficiency with Windows PCs, MS Office, and Photoshop. 7. Patterns-based design and coding with solid debugging skills.

Now if this person actually exists then I’m in more trouble than I thought…

  31. Catherine Says:

The thing that worries me most about these job descriptions are the cowboys who think ‘oh well, I might as well have a go’ and come prepared not with any decent experience or qualifications but plenty of BS. They know the right words to say but don’t know what they actually mean, it just sounds good and they get the job - to the horror of those who they join and end up holding their hand for the first 6 months!

I agree with the small but essential pen and pad test across the table, which asks - can you do what you say you can do? I recently went to an interview and was asked to complete a small challenge and it says more to the potential employer about your thought process and actual knowledge than anything else on a niclely formatted CV/resume!

  32. Richard Conyard Says:

@Justin - Damn, got me Ruby on Rails and point 6; other than that I was doing so well ;-) I guess that’s the trouble with doing it since the dinosaurs (well early-mid 90’s).

What were they advertising for? Role / Position?

  33. justin McGonigle Says:

@Richard-They’re looking for a Web Developer.

  34. Rida Al Barazi Says:

Two to five years of experience in web development, good understanding of the new web methodologies and techniques, if you know what the following 10 concepts really means and you are able to exercise at least 7 of them very well then this job is for you:
Web standards, Accessibility, Usability, Ajax, Subversion, Algorithms, Unit Testing, Test Driven Development, MVC, Extreme Programming.

Finally it doesn’t matter what programming languages or frameworks you are really good at but it is how you utilize them what’s important for us.

  35. Justin Halsall Says:

I also saw a job offer for a “senior” rails programmer, now as rails is only 3 years old the only seniors are the ones who created it. So they should post something like this instead: “Stupidinc. is looking for David Heinemeier Hansson”

  36. Dave Mo Says:

Back before the web coding became a required part of a designer’s resume, prospective employers were looking for “PageMaker/Quark Gurus” or “Photoshop Wizards” to produce supermarket adverts.

In spite of over 20 years of graphic and print design and prepress experience and having experience in Desktop Publishing since the Mac Plus was bleeding edge tech, I was once told that I didn’t get the job because I didn’t have experience on a Mac Perfoma!

    Morons.

It made me get out of the professional design field for years as a career path. However, I did use the time to learn some programming and evetually HTML, and got back into the game.

However, it looks like they’re back to the same old B.S.

Maybe it’s time to look in a different direction again.

  37. Diane Says:

To the poor young lad who doesn’t know how to get in if everybody requires at least 2 years experience. The answer is you don’t. You get jobs through other people, not adverts. Or, you take crappy jobs that aren’t in Web Development but allow you to have some access to the company’s web site. I took a job as an admin assistant for that reason even though I almost got fired because I was the worst admin assistant that ever walked the Earth. But as we parted they said they’d give me a good rec for any web design jobs I tried for.

To those who complain about the BA requirement. I have a Womens’ Studies BA. If that doesn’t scream “I had no idea I’d end up here” then I don’t know what does! The BA is all about demonstrating you have “cultural capital.” Smart companies understand that English majors are sometimes better programmers than Comp Sci majors.

About those ridiculous job adverts. I would never respond to one of those, even if I had all those requisite skills. It’s clear people in that company don’t understand the industry so you’d be all alone without much opportunity to learn from others.

  38. Justin McGonigle Says:

@Mortal-Experience is experience. Build a portfolio of work-learn as much as you can about your interest(s)in Web Developement/Design-perhaps seek an internship-and you’ll have 2 years of experience. I’d like to think, at least, that a person’s quality of work is what gets them in the door. Good luck. :-)

  42. Andrew Miesem Says:

The problem here is that there is no way to come up with a single description for “web developer” that accurately describes all the different disciplines that exist within our field.

Rather than writing an ad for such a generic position, employers should be encouraged to specifically target the area of expertise necessary to the job. If web professionals begin to market themselves as designers, coders, and writers, then employers will (slowly) begin to comprehend that there is no such thing as a “web developer” who can do it all.

“Web Designer” is, first and foremost, a designer. Much like there are interior designers, print designers, or machine designers, a web designer is a graphic artist who designs for the web.

“Web Programmer” is a programmer who is skilled in the client/server nature of the web. There are even subdivisions within this area, as “PHP Programmer” and “Django Programmer” are also quite valid job titles.

“Information Architect” handles the complex task of organizing information. This is someone who can take the mess of users’ content and transform it into a well-ordered collection of information.

“Web Content Editor” is the individual who can take someone’s poorly-written MS Word document and transform it into eloquent prose, structured for the ADD-like browsing habits of the average web visitor.

“Web Manager” is the individual who sees the big picture, and can work with other web specialists (hey! that’s a nice way to put it!) to coordinate the production of large and complex web publication projects.

By taking web development out of the realm of wizards and gypsies and putting it squarely into a classification system that stresses the different skills required, we “web developers” will find ourselves much better matched to the real-world needs of employers, or so I keep telling myself.

  43. Montoya Says:

“ASP and ASP.NET in terms of connecting to databases and Accessibility standards”

Ah yes, those two things are *so* related!

  44. Pamela Says:

This issue has bugged me for years, but I’m over it now that I run my own web design / dev business.

The two funniest / most bizarre requirements I’ve seen: “5-10 years of Java experience” (in 2000; by the way, how much better do you get between 5 and 10 years??). Also, “SDLC experience” = Software Development Lifecycle. They were using it as though it were a technical acronym - so I made sure my resume had the acronym somewhere so that it would match agencies’ search criteria.

By the way, I have a comp sci degree and I used to interview developers (I worked for a couple of well-known and respected consulting firms). Here in Australia, those with comp sci degrees were consistently more likely to be hired than those with maths or other degrees (or none at all). Those with a comp sci degree understood more about things like algorithms, OO, design patterns, etc. than those without. The degree system here is differnet from other countries and tend to be more specialised / intensive.

  45. Sheamus Says:

    Happy Thanksgiving Molly!

  46. Sarven Capadisli Says:

    @Niko Neugebauer:

I highly doubt “anyone” with a generic programming background would be able to fulfill those requirements since the questions are geared to assess the overall knowledge and experience a candidate possesses in and around the web dev field. This is used as a first layer for screening.

As far as my set of questions, here is what I was thinking:

A candidate understanding the real differences between HTML and XHTML and how to implement them properly says quite a bit. As a corollary, they are capable of writing well-formed documents, applying the 3 main layers to their pages and to some extent, they are aware of how browsers treat these (proper) documents differently.

Whether having experience with IRC or not is only intended to portray the candidates` (for the lack of a better term) guruness on the web and perhaps to illustrate that they use other collaborative social methods to obtain information. In other words, they like to learn, and share knowledge at the same time.

In the case of a developer understanding the core concepts in programming is much more valuable (in my opinion) in the long run then perhaps only being proficient in one language.

Being able to reach a sites` target audience is probably the most complex area of knowledge a candidate can possess since it is in concern with various sources, and requirements one has to put together in order to build a sound site. This question mainly reveals an answer to how well a candidate knows the web dev field.

Proficiency in all of these fields is not a requirement. The submitted CV and the interview can reveal and expand further from these questions to better assess the candidates skills.

    @Andrew Miesem:
You make good points about the distinction of these sub-fields within the generic ‘web developer’. The problem is that often times there is an overlap and can be difficult (perhaps more costy as well) to separate one from another.

    @Mortal:
Don’t let the number of years intimidate you. Although it is a good way to measure a candidates overall experience in the field, it is certainly not the final say. I would suggest you start out small while you are (I’m guessing) still in school and concentrate on implementing quality work (not necessarily quantity) perhaps for low cost for clients or friend of a relative’s business site, at least to have the opportunity to show some of your work. One well built site is better then ten mediocre sites. The place where you ideally would like to work will see this. You have to work hard and put your time in and it may seem like a slow, unworthy process at first but I believe you will benefit from this in the long run.

  47. Disgruntled Says:

I’ll just let my blog be the job advert. Come work with me, anyone?

  48. Isofarro Says:

Passionate about the web and looking for a new challenge? Can you demonstrate indepth knowledge of web standards, web accessibility, HTML, CSS, and DOM Scripting? Are you at home developing scripts in PHP and Perl? Have you built your own database driven applications? Do you develop cool web projects in your spare time?

Fancy working in a world-class team of web developers?

    :-)

  49. Andrew Miesem Says:

    @Sarven:
I tend to agree that there’s a risk of overlap, but if employers can be encouraged to keep these distinctions in mind, then they could write job ads for only what skills are required as opposed to advertising for the proverbial web wizard.

  50. Johnny Says:

50k a year isnt enough for me. I rather do SEO work :D

  51. wendy Says:

Well i was lucky enough to have an HR lady ask for a job spec when we advertised for a second front end developer- as well as follow my advice on presenting them with a skills test which counts for more to me than any promises made on a CV:) this is what we came up with in the end which i think was pretty fair…
    Requirements:

    1. Coding validated HTML in strict XHTML and/or transitional - understanding which doctype applies to any given situation. Ability to code with and without Dream-weaver / Home-site etc.

    2. Coding layouts without tables using CSS and keeping structure and style separate, also knowing how to code print style sheets.

    3. Understanding standards compliancy and semantic coding as well as SEO requirements and understanding of usability and basic design principles.

    4. Knowing how to adjust code for mailers [newsletters].

    5. Familiarity with Photoshop and ability to cut up PSD’s and optimize; know when to compromise on size vs quality and vice versa and know which format is most suitable for given design/image/slice.

    6. Basic knowledge of DHTML and DOM: enough to integrate JavaScript into HTML and adjust existing scripts.

    7. Know how to integrate back-end code with front end i.e. basic understanding of object orientated programming.

    8. Focus on front-end coding, researching changes and advances in the relevant technologies.

    9. Basic knowledge of Flash/action script.

    10. Must have good interpersonal skills and ability to make and maintain excellent working relationships with colleagues.

  66. Christopher Says:

A few comments up and a few months ago, someone mentioned an employer who used SDLC (System Development Life Cycle) as a technical acronym. Actually, this is one of my pet peeves - because I have been in IT a LONG time, and to me SDLC is Synchronous Data Link Control, a protocol essential to networks of large IBM boxes that has existed for more than 30 years.

On more than one occasion, back a few years ago when I went on interviews, I might get asked if I had experience with SDLC. My reply was usually: “Yes, quite extensive experience actually, but I haven’t used it for quite a few years. You didn’t mention that this job involved networking IBM mainframes! But since you are using Synchronous Data Link Control, you will be pleased to know that I have experience with command level CICS, as well as MVS and some TSO/ISPF!”

Okay, okay, just my way of teaching a few people that not every acronym means the same thing to the same person.

    1. Ask for recommendations
    2. Give a task to the applicant and see how he-she manages it, if there are any new approaches or thoughts of it
    3. Work in team also is a good thuing - try to give a team-work test, so you could find out if the apllicant can co-op with collegues (or sometimes with competitors)
