Come Labor Labor Day With Me

Damn I’ve been so sad. Watching my kitty die really brought up all the other stuff, too. It left me empty. So in the spirit of proaction, I have an unexpected but enthusiastic request:

Who’s up for a Bar Camp at my place, this Labor Day Weekend? We can talk the geekest speak. Show off all our stuff (WiFi is free, of course, and lots of seating and sleeping bag space available).

But I do need your help: I need some labor! I want to rip all the negative from my home, re-align its Feng Shui, and get it all proper. I’m talking rip out carpets, sand down wood, polish it up. I’m talking total wardrobe toss. I’m talking we’re going to clean it with bleach.

And I need you.

I can’t pay for your transport here to Tucson, but I’ll get you from the airport to the digs. I will buy and cook you the best food. Or order great pizza. Whatever we need. And we’ll talk CSS during breaks, too, if you like.

I really need friends here, and I really need to cleanse this house. Rituals of many cultures do a cleansing upon the death of loved ones, so we can celebrate life. I feel I need to do this.

Let’s celebrate some life. And pass me the Windex, okay?

[*Note to the British: Labor Day is where we celebrate unions, for those who don’t realize, and for those Brits who think we don’t have them ]

    What tools shall I bring?

  2. Molly Says:

John: A sturdy heart, a great attitude, a huge hug for the hostess, and a good sleeping bag.

Otherwise, if you have skills such as carpentry, carpeting , painting, and tilework please let me know.

Your generosity is ever my blessing.

  3. David Zemens Says:

Now I must admit, this is a tempting offer. How hard will we have to work? If we can only speak “geek speak” in the mildest terms, are we still welcome? I know alot more about home repair and demolishing than I know about “geek speak”?

    Am I still welcome?

  4. Molly Says:

Hey David, if you can rip up some butt ugly carpet and dispose of it (oh, anyone with serious truck space, let me know) absolutely.

Let’s gather up our crew, then we’ll figure out how to work/balance everything. Okay?

  5. Toxikk Says:

Oh! I wish I could make that. Sounds like fun.

I have not stopped thinking of you Molly. I hope you are doing well.

    Much love!

    - b

  6. Terri Says:

I’d love to come (I’ve ripped up some carpet in my time and replaced it with ceramic tile), but I have two terminally ill kitties and am unable/unwilling to travel as long as they are still with me on this earth. Your “Flowers for Tara” left me sobbing uncontrollably…

I’ll be with you in spirit though! I think the cleansing is a wonderful idea. {{Big hugs}} to you from Tennessee.

    Take care Molly!

  8. Patrick Says:

If I were in AZ, I’d be there. Have fun with this; it sounds like a blast. Posting pics?

  9. Rea Says:

Ohhh, what a tempting offer! Pay for classes or wisk off to help Molly??? Ohhh goodness, the agony of decisions!

I really wish I could go, sounds like fun. Plus I know how to paint, lay down tile, and a bunch of other stuff.

I hope you get a good group to help you out and hang out with. :-)

  10. Eric Says:

I would so totally come to this if I could.

  11. Gavin Jacobi Says:

Shame it is a bit far to come from OZ — but hey, we will get to see the *new* Molly in Sydney, eh?
You can always bring over a bit of your carpet and we can do a purely ceremonial ripping-up job…

    Have fun all!

  12. Kelly Says:

Molly - so sad to hear about your kitty! I would love to come and pay homage to your little one and help rip the hell out of your carpet. It will feel SO good. It looks like we will be seeing eachother at the end of the month - very much looking forward to the reconnect. - much love, k

  13. Kimberly Says:

    Molly, I’m there.

  14. Julie Says:

Molly, you DO realize that Jello Biafra will be at Club Congress Saturday night? So you should take a break for that…

And of course give me a call if I can be of help. I have my kids most of the weekend, but I am in town for the calling upon.

  15. Julian Bennett Holmes Says:

I really wish I could be there, that sounds awesome.

By the way, you really should see Jello on saturday.

  16. Ray sometimes lost in america Says:

Ray

  17. cryo Says:

Sounds like a lot of fun, but I don’t think I can justify the expense. Being a brit its a bit far to travel to do DIY. Wish you luck. Hope you have a good time!

  18. Jeff L Says:

Intruiging offer, I’d be interested if it wasn’t so last minute and I didn’t already have plans.

  19. Nate K Says:

I would be there if you were a little closer. Im not much of a carpenter, electrician, etc - but I can work hard and get things cleaned up. I am a neat freak! So - maybe you should move to the Ohio area :)

  20. Dale Cruse Says:

I wish I could join you, Molly. Be well.

  21. Christopher Says:

I guess I’ll be on an airplane when this starts? :p

  22. Aaron Gustafson Says:

I would be there if I could Molly. Lord knows I’ve pulled enough carpet and done enough home renovations to be of service. Plus I love you; I’ll be with you in spirit.

  23. Maaike Says:

I would have loved to come over and meet you in real life, but unfortunately I can’t make it from Holaand (doh). Have fun!

  24. Jo Says:

Can you hold it off just a little bit? I have done plenty of renovations in both home and offices to be of service. I can do carpentry, plumbing, electrical and painting. Just not up to the travel this weekend. Hope it goes well.

    Jo

  25. Lux Says:

I would have jumped at the chance if I still lived in Tucson. We could have desecrated this old carpet, had a CSS jam session, and then gone for cold beer at The Buffet. Maybe another time.

Try doing something different this weekend - avoid the computer. Just go do something totally different.

  26. june Says:

Sage smudge sticks are great for cleansing. I’m sure you can find them in your town. One roommate I had always smudged the house after cleaning it.

  27. Rick Says:

I’d love to help rip out your old carpet. Just did mine a while ago and put down tile instead.

I’m sorta a jack of all trades. I can set up a (windows) network, paint a bedroom, build (not necessarily design) a web page, change the oil, fix the cooler, plant a garden, build a bookcase, and other things.

So if you still need some help, just give me a yell ( or an email ).

Oh … I do live here in tucson.

  28. Jimmy C Says:

Sorry, if I’m late with this post but how did everything turn out?

  29. toys Says:

This was almost a year ago, but I was going back over old posts and happened to see it. I wanted to applaud you for your resolve and your plans. I’ve always found that re-organization and hard work (which for me tend to amount to the same thing) are the most cathartic methods to get over a loss. My fiancé and I recently lost our dog Ripley (to old age; he had lived a long full life), and your post has inspired me to do a little re-modeling of my own. The bedroom is an especially sore spot, since his bed still sits in one corner where I would tuck him in each night. I’m thinking of completely changing the color scheme and maybe re-arranging some of the furniture in an effort to make it feel like a different place. Wonder why this never comes up on Changing Rooms? I would think it’s a common reason to want to re-model.

Happy birthday to your MOM, Molly! May she have many, many more birthdays to come…

  33. pet portraits Says:

I’m sorry about your pet. I understand how that feels because I also lost my Purry two months ago. I felt devastated. I didn’t know what to do and I didn’t know how to continue with my work. How is everything going? Were you able to move on?
