Web Directions and Extreme Standards in Australia
I absolutely cannot believe how fast time is zipping by! I must have had my head everywhere but in iCal lately, because lo and behold I realize I’m just about a month away from visiting Sydney for Web Directions.
Visiting Sydney and making a slew of new friends at Web Essentials last year was a highlight of world travel, professional pride and personal fun for me. I’d never been that far South, and I think two things especially made me fall in love with Sydney: How unexpectedly colorful it is, and how warm the people I met while there were. In fact, I see a few of your names on the speaker roster this year! (Ben, Gian, Donna, Kevin, I’m lookin’ at you . . . )
Fantastic!
This year, I’m going back with Andy Clarke in tow, who has never crossed the international date line. Our dear Malarkey has apparently already started his ’round the world trip, fearing any time spent without his MacBookPro would cause the world to start unravelling at its seams. You can see here the beard he’s grown during his recent seafaring days.
On Tuesday, September 26, we’ll be in Sydney presenting Extreme Standards, a full day workshop that we’ve taken a new approach with we’re absolutely certain is going to be a heck of a lot of fun as well as profoundly informative.
Extreme Standards is the perfect one-day to get you on board with the most contemporary practices in markup and CSS, and quickly see how they relate to accessibility, SEO, and most importantly really flexible, interoperable Web design.
The presentation style is going to be a bit unique, with a combination of hard information delivered fast, succinctly (and with great wit and charm if all goes right
) and with lots of visual representations to ensure rapid understanding. We also will be playing some games that, as much fun as we’ll have with them, are sure to help you remember the skills we’ll be sharing. While many attendees will know some of the content, there’s a lot we’ve done to hone in on the most common trouble spots in markup and CSS, including laying out forms, working with positioning in ways you might not have imagined to get results, and coming up with a significant browser policy to ensure your design and technical savvy are appreciated to their fullest by your site visitors.
In addition to our workshop, be sure not to miss Andy’s Creating Inspired Design during the conference itself, and while I know many of you will be out trying the local brews the night before, come have breakfast with me. I’m actually at my most entertaining in the early part of the day.
So, despite the fact that world events and attitudes appear to be conspiring against those of us who enjoy freedom of movement about the world, I sure hope we’ll see you down under. Let me know if you’re going!

Last year my other half went to WE05 and brought home a signed copy of “The Zen of CSS Design” as a gift. The combination of your book plus listening to WE05 pod casts started me thinking about web design again. I realised that I missed it! (Time-out for kids scenario.) This year we are both heading across the country for Web Directions. Pity we won’t make the workshop but am looking forward to the rest! Hope to meet you then

Wish I could be there…really do - I think Sydney is a great city and can’t wait to go there again. I hope the Web Directions gig is a hugely successful one (of course it will be!) And look forward to the photos on Flickr and any news…

See you there Molly. Might even make the breakfast, no guarantees though

Of course I will travel across the country to have breakfast with you Molly and 100 or so other people.
Unfortunately on September 26, this bloke called Jeremy Keith is talking about DOM Scripting and AJAX and I need more help on JS than standards.
The bad news is last year, I think a deal was struck that if you came back to Sydney Kay and I would take you shopping. I have gone and got a great schedule of fly in, attend two workshops, WD06, then OZ-IA and fly home exhausted on Monday.

I was glad to have the chance to meet you (briefly) last year at WE05. I WAS booked into Web Directions (including Extreme Standards and the Brekkie with you) but I’ve just finished up at the organisation I’ve been with for some years (which means I had to give up my Web Directions ticket). Time to get cracking with my new organisation on Monday, and get booked back into the same workshops and conference!

Good luck for all!

[…] Dave Shea also published a book called The Zen of CSS Design: Visual Enlightenment for the Web with Molly Holzschlag, who is speaking at the conference and running a workshop on Extreme Standards with Andy Clarke (yes I’ll be there). You can have breakfast with Molly Holzschlag as well (I’ll be there too). […]

Those who choose to take the “slights and disappointments” path, meanwhile, are very generously compensated for their trouble
