Save Yourself the Brain Cells?
Whooo boy howdy, take a look at this one, kids.
Here I was surfing along on a site called Find Your Spot and lo and behold Camino stumbled upon this little notice:

The text reads:
The web browser you’re using can’t quite handle the programming used for the Job Search feature. The following browsers will not work:
- Opera
- Netscape 6 or higher
- Any service (e.g. CompuServe) based on Nescape 6 or higher.
- Any browser based on Mozilla 6. (The tech gnomes in back say that if you don’t know what Mozilla is, you should ignore this line and save yourself the brain cells.)
The following browsers have been tested and will work:
- Netscape 4.x
- Microsoft I.E. 4.x or higher
These guys are joking right? RIGHT?

It loads in Safari, albeit rather mucked up.
June 23rd, 2006 at 11:52 am
Wow, that’s the first time I’ve seen someone intentionally state that they don’t support a recent browser. We tested on NS4 and it works but not on 6?!
Oooookaaayy, good luck with that.
June 23rd, 2006 at 11:56 am
Seems like an easier way to save the brain cells is to not visit that site.
June 23rd, 2006 at 12:05 pm
Okay, WHAT?? I just read this, “The tech gnomes in back say that if you don’t know what Mozilla is, you should ignore this line and save yourself the brain cells.”
Someone in their marketing department needs to get fired. Or at least smacked around some.
June 23rd, 2006 at 12:10 pm
I think they need some free speech in the way of comments. They do have a “report errors” page. Or maybe they only want to serve those members of the flock who for whatever reason are stuck with old Netscape or crusty IE.
June 23rd, 2006 at 12:43 pm
Interesting accessibility policy that. I think that marketing person needs poking with the sensible stick and possibly the development department need an upgrade.
June 23rd, 2006 at 12:57 pm
Hahaha… This is almost unreal! Is that service still under active development? How can you only provide support for NN 4.x and IE 4.x?
Could it just be a really old message, where Camino happened to trigger their “unsupported browser” test? But that would beg the question why they specifically point out Netscape 6 and Mozilla as unsupported..

Silly, annoying, and irresponsible these days. What’s worse is taking the whole ‘quiz’ then realizing that it’s all just a ploy to get you to enter your personal demographic information as the final step. The bastards!
June 23rd, 2006 at 1:23 pm
Wow. [searching for a witty comment]
June 23rd, 2006 at 1:33 pm
*spraying coffee from nose* … good lord, who thought that was a good idea?
June 23rd, 2006 at 2:38 pm
This website will not work on computers, cell phones, or PDA’s…
June 23rd, 2006 at 2:53 pm
It actually does work on Firefox and Opera, strangely enough. However, I believe that dog’s tail-wagging is making me dizzy. I veto this site solely based on that
June 23rd, 2006 at 6:33 pm
Unfortunately they probably have no sense of humour so my guess is no joking
June 23rd, 2006 at 7:25 pm
Even better, they misspelled “Netscape”. So they’re clueless, condescending, AND slipshod! It’s a trifecta of suck.
June 23rd, 2006 at 8:18 pm
“a trifecta of suck” - leave it to Eric to come up with a new buzz word!
June 24th, 2006 at 2:11 am
I’m surprised they don’t support NCSA’s Mosiac. Did you check now? Its under maintainance.
it says..:
Routine System Maintenance
Nothing is lost, everything’s fine. To keep things running smoothly, we quickly clean up our system each night at this time.
* We’ll be done in [countdown box] seconds, and you’ll be right back where you left off.
* We suggest a light snack or perhaps some stretching exercises. You can also read our spoof of our own home page, below.
* If you’d rather come back another day, your “cookie” should remember your info so you can pick up where you left off.
* After [countdown box] seconds, just hit the “Refresh” or “Reload” button on your browser and you’re good to go!
Thank you for your patience,

i’m off for some stretching….
June 24th, 2006 at 5:32 am
Geez for all their wit and self-aggrandizing attitude, you’d think these gnome-like beings with mystical insight could have built a web site that works . . .
June 24th, 2006 at 5:57 am
This is how you justify being lazy in development. No support for Mozilla? okay… The page source reveals a massive amount of PHP and Java (sort of expected), but also a lot of proprietary tags and calls that look like they are only good in Frontpage and very new Netscape models. Hooray for lazyness!
June 24th, 2006 at 5:57 am
sorry - correction - “very new versions of Netscape”, should read “hardly used version of Netscape”

…”FindYourSpot.com has received numerous kudos as one of the best sites on the Internet. It has earned recognition by online services such as InfoBeat, Kim Commando and WebShots to name a few. The site has been recommended on numerous popular “drive time” radio shows and by television features throughout the country. The site has been profiled in publications such as Realtor Magazine, Homes & Lifestyles, and countless local newspapers. FindYourSpot.com even earned recognition as the best Website in the state of Colorado. We believe that FindYourSpot.com does a better job of helping users who are considering relocation than any other such resource. Unquestionably it is among the very best.”…
Well, who are we to argue with that?
June 24th, 2006 at 6:28 am
Ron: Actually, from a web application perspective it’s a great concept. It’s just such a poorly designed and executed site. It brings home the issue of how important it is for web app developers to take time to develop clean, accessible as possible, interoperable applications from the ground up.
June 24th, 2006 at 6:30 am
Can I go ahead and pre-emptively add ‘Find Your Spot’ to f**kedcompany.com?
June 24th, 2006 at 7:07 am
The developers of that site got thier braincells free with a pack of Kellogs…
June 24th, 2006 at 11:56 am
They still put prizes in Cracker Jacks?
Looks like a candidate for webpagesthatsuck.com
June 24th, 2006 at 12:10 pm
Heh I just tried it with FireFox and javascript OFF and it works just fine
weird.
June 25th, 2006 at 5:40 am
Wow, thats.. Thats pretty smart for something being actively developed. Shows market (and web development) insight. Sigh.
June 25th, 2006 at 5:43 am
Molly, I totally agree with you. There was somewhat of a littler sarcasm in my previous comment.
But, it uld also be a very clever ploy to save bandwith. Scare away some of your customers, so you can still host it on a $4.95 a month hosting plan.
June 25th, 2006 at 8:23 pm
Looks similar to WebCT, where they have to update their code every time a new browser is released. Are they using browser-specific hacks?
June 28th, 2006 at 3:17 am
The great internet chatroom tradition of slapping people with large wet fish was invented for people like this…
Although I have before seen a “best displayed using a monitor” warning on a website (the design being mainly animated starry background with fluorescent green text, I actually believe this wasn’t a joke.) maybe we should submit this extra piece of wisdom to these gnomes ?
June 28th, 2006 at 8:06 am
“Opera” - which version?!
Believe it or not, I came across a site this week that said best viewed in Netscape 4 or IE4. These sites usually add “Best viewed at 800 x 600 pixels”. Sorry?
June 29th, 2006 at 9:38 pm
Here’s an exact quote from the site: “If your web browser program uses “cookies” (most do), our website will recognize you the next time you visit our home page! Just click the “welcome” button on the homepage! You’ll have access to your Quiz results until (INSERT DATE TRIAL OR MEMBERSHIP EXPIRES)”
Didn’t anyone proof-read the live site? I didn’t know that “insert date trial or membership expires was a time”!
Also, they goo a great job of assigning passwords. The one they gave me is a five-letter common English word. Now, that’s secure!
On a positive note, they seem to have removed the browser note, and I’ve had no problems with Opera 9.
July 3rd, 2006 at 3:36 am
Damn, and my favourite browser is Nescape 6.
July 5th, 2006 at 7:33 am
That’s a shame really. It’s actually a really cool site I’ve used a few times. Never realized that it tripped up on so many browsers.
July 5th, 2006 at 8:16 am
Ok … so the site bites.
But Molly … what were >your
July 17th, 2006 at 6:23 am
Well, so much for the customer-centred web! Obviously it’s one of those strange sites where they don’t need visitors.

Mozilla Firefox rulesssss!
October 27th, 2006 at 7:34 pm
My favourite browser is Mozilla Firefox 2.0, work very good.
