  1. What is that, is this some kind of roads between hills ?
    Any way it’s cool :)

  2. Molly says:

Hi Abdelrahman! It’s a copper mine in Arizona.

  3. hanindyo says:

Hi Molly, do you fly by your own? If so, what license do you have?

  4. Molly says:

hanindyo, I may learn to fly a plane someday as I love aviation, but these are taken from a commercial jet.

  5. Josh Delsman says:

Hey, that’s an idea for a good startup :) And a great website, to boot!

  6. Ben Gray says:

Not to sound like a tree-hugger or anything but strip mining seems to me to be the ecological equivalent of rape. Great picture of a sad situation.

  7. I saw the words strip mine and thought to myself, “Oh no, not another Naked Day.”

    Cool picture Molly.

  8. Greta says:

Sheldon took the words right outta my mouth! :)

  9. Molly says:

Hehe fooled you with the naked implication, didn’t I? ;-)

    Ben: I agree, alas.

  10. Zeldman and his crew are churning out websites too wide for 800×600 resolutions, what’s going on !!??!!??

  11. Dave Scriven says:

Here in the UK if I tried to take photos during flight all you would see is clouds, clouds and clouds. Oh and some more clouds. If you go below the clouds all you will see is rain :(

And why did you go and tell everybody they were taken from a plane?! We all thought you were superwoman!

    Thanks for breaking the bubble!

  12. Ben Buchanan says:

Holy crap….. MOLLY CAN FLY!!! We are in awe of your super powers ;)

    Nice pic, BTW.

  13. hanindyo says:

@molly: same here Molly, I love aviation too..I’ve been learning to fly as “desk pilot” looking forward for the real thing in the future :)

i love this stuff; the world in macro. not sure if this has been mentioned, but if you haven’t already, you need to check out “taking measures: across the american landscape” but james corner and alex s. maclean. http://tinyurl.com/mn5gw

First, I can’t believe you actually get these quality shots from the window of a commercial flight. I don’t know about clouds, as someone else said, but I would get some wicked reflection if I tried that with my camera. Aside from that, though, I really like them. I actually love that moment in a flight when the plane is just taking off and you are suddenly given this entirely new perspective. I am always struck by the fact that there are far more swimming pools out there in people’s backyards than I ever realized. Another thing that always sticks out to me is areas just like this one, where a strip mine or some other large industrial project is going on. For the most part, these kinds of places are kept concealed, behind trees, or tucked back of some mountain, certainly off the beaten path so that society at large doesn’t have to think about it. And yet in those first few moments of a flight, there they all are laid out below us. Unfortunately, I only get to catch these on take off, since for some reason I’m absolutely terrified of landing.

    Number One Site Enjoy.. ;)

  17. Wow! That’s really breathtaking. What did you use to take such picture? I mean, what was the setting of your camera?
