Three Great Love Songs

I feel we need a bit of music talk around molly.com. I’m thinking about top three love songs. My choices today:

  • Northern Sky – Nick Drake
  • You Do Something to Me – Paul Weller
  • Wonderful Tonight – Eric Clapton

Somehow I’ve ended up choosing three sentimental tunes from soulful Brits. Go figure! I think the Clapton might be a weakish choice, with better contenders if I really had to give it more thought, but the song’s always held a certain sweet spot for me so there you have it.

Show me your love!

you really need to rethink that “Wonderful Tonight”. Bryce in an earlier post could be mistaken about the lyrics. Depending upon the timing of when the song was written and the event Eric is singing about….it could be a song about infidelity.

    go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonderful_Tonight

and then re-listen to the song.

  46. Wonderful Tonight is my all time favorite. It also helps me out when my girlfriend is mad at me, I just sing that to her and no more being mad!

  47. Craig Goodrich says:

Steve, asking about love songs for parents to their kids:
John Denver, “The Music is You” and “For Baby (for Bobby)” are my personal favorites.

    Love songs –

    Singer-Songwriter:
Christine Lavin, “The Kind of Love You Never Recover From” (kudos, Matt)
ditto, “Venus Kissed the Moon” [both from the Attainable Love cd]

Jim Croce — practically anything except “Working in the Carwash” or “Leroy Brown”

John Denver — [how much time you got?] Annie’s Song, My Sweet Lady (the song that ended my second marriage and moved me halfway across the continent), etc. etc.

John Hartford, “Gentle On My Mind” [hit by Glen Campbell]

Rock (more difficult, since nearly all rock is crap):

Jefferson Airplane, “Comin’ Back to Me” [Surrealistic Pillow album]
    Beatles, “In My Life”

    Great American Songbook (a cornucopia):

Diana Krall’s version of Besame Mucho
ditto The Best Thing for You
ditto I’ve Got You Under My Skin
    ditto The Look of Love
    ditto From This Moment On

Jane Monheit’s version of Embraceable You
    ditto More Than You Know
    ditto Never Let Me Go
    ditto Just Squeeze Me
    ditto Comecar de Novo
    ditto A Case of You

Susannah McCorkle’s version of Love is Here to Stay
    ditto For All We Know
    ditto Wave
ditto Once You’ve Been in Love

Ella Fitzgerald’s version of almost anything

… but then, I’m extremely old, as you may have guessed.

  48. Craig Goodrich says:

Oh, and I forgot: practically anybody’s version of “Corcovado.” The Portuguese lyrics are better, but the English is OK. The most famous (Getz/Gilberto, Verve 1963) version has Getz’ sax badly overcut, probably because the engineers were using preemphasis-calibrated peak-reading meters and the sax doesn’t put out much in the way of high harmonics.
