Three Great Love Songs
I feel we need a bit of music talk around molly.com. I’m thinking about top three love songs. My choices today:
- Northern Sky - Nick Drake
- You Do Something to Me - Paul Weller
- Wonderful Tonight - Eric Clapton
Somehow I’ve ended up choosing three sentimental tunes from soulful Brits. Go figure! I think the Clapton might be a weakish choice, with better contenders if I really had to give it more thought, but the song’s always held a certain sweet spot for me so there you have it.
Show me your love!

Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush. Love her! I mean I love her new album!
January 13th, 2006 at 7:47 am
* Yellow — Coldplay
* Diamond Road — Sheryl Crow
* The Good Witch of the North — Everclear
My favourites at the moment, not sure how many of them really count as “love songs” per se
January 13th, 2006 at 7:55 am
1. Zemfira - London Sky
2. Leonard Cohen - The Letters
3. Dinah Washington - It’s Magic
The 1st one is my favourite love song (memories of my 1st love). Zemfira is a russian singer and the song is originaly called - “Niebo Londona” which means London sky.

One of my all time favorite love songs, although a bit racy for some, is the ALBUM/CD version of Jefferson Starship’s Miracles. The passion Marty Balin had for this woman is amazing…..you can hear it in the words and in the song.
I also agree with Clapton’s Wonderful Tonight! Great song!
Music is a passion of mine, so it is tough to pick a number 3, there are so many oldies! *grin*
Suzanne
January 13th, 2006 at 8:17 am
* Godzilla - Will Johnson
* Transatlanticism - Death Cab for Cutie
* The Whole of the Moon - Peter Mulvey
* You Meet The Nicest People In Your Dreams - Peter Mulvey covered this on “The Trouble With Poets” and now I can’t seem to find who sang it originally.
So it might seem strange that a love song be titled Godzilla, but if you hear it you’ll understand.
January 13th, 2006 at 8:21 am
Agree completely with “Wonderful Tonight” - one of my “Best of’s” ever since I am 15!
:-)
What about Dylans “Shooting Star” not an outstanding Love tune, but kind off…
or Genesis (Yes..) “Afterglow”, I recommend one of the Live Versions
or paul Wellers “Early morning rain”

January 13th, 2006 at 8:26 am
Lou Reed - Perfect Day
I love Nick Drake too.
January 13th, 2006 at 8:32 am
I’ve always had a soft spot for:
1. The Turtles: Happy Together
2. Van Morrison: Brown Eyed Girl
3. Hunters and Collectors: Throw Your Arms Around Me
Although, for number 3, I actually prefer the version performed by Doug Anthony All Stars.
January 13th, 2006 at 8:36 am
The Truth by India Arie - One of my current personal favorites…not really your traditional love song but a song about love none the less.
January 13th, 2006 at 8:42 am
If I was going to choose a Clapton song it would have been ‘Tears In Heaven’ - still a love song, of a kind…
January 13th, 2006 at 8:44 am
“* The Whole of the Moon - Peter Mulvey”
Have to agree with that one!
January 13th, 2006 at 9:10 am
Three good choices there, Molly. I’m going to give it a slant and say that all the best love songs are about unrequited love and/or breaking up:
I Can’t Make You Love Me (Bonnie Raitt/Prince/George Michael)
Holding Onto You (Terrence Trent D’Arby)
Can We Still Be Friends? (Todd Rundgren)
January 13th, 2006 at 9:29 am
Too much love will kill you.
January 13th, 2006 at 9:39 am
Iron and Wine - Naked as We Came
Dave Matthews Band - Say Goodbye
Warren Zevon - Keep Me in Your Heart
Damien Rice - The Blower’s Daughter
January 13th, 2006 at 9:42 am
Louis Armstrong’s “Wonderful World” is one of my favorites.
January 13th, 2006 at 9:51 am
Damien Rice - The Blower’s Daughter (good one Darren
Jeff Buckley - So Real
Pearl Jam - Betterman
January 13th, 2006 at 10:25 am
I cry at pretty much anything, and my wife makes fun of me every time.
January 13th, 2006 at 11:32 am
Mine is an old motown song called “I’ll Always Love You” sung by Brenda Holloway. Hell it even has love in the title.
January 13th, 2006 at 12:18 pm
Cave & Minogue - Where the wild roses grow
Tommy James & The Shondells - Crimson and clover
The Cure - Pictures of you
January 13th, 2006 at 12:54 pm
Romeo and Juliet — Dire Straits
Have I Told You Lately — Van Morrison
Love and Affection — Joan Armatrading
Not because they’re neccessarily the best, but because they all have a meaning to me.
January 13th, 2006 at 1:09 pm
Pictures of You- The Cure
Drive- The Cars
Always on My Mind- Willie
January 13th, 2006 at 1:22 pm
Funny, two songs immediately came to my mind, and they’re Van Morrison and Joan Armatrading songs, but different ones than Jon Leighton mentioned:
Van Morrison: I’ll Be Your Lover, Too
Joan Armatrading: Down to Zero (though it isn’t describing a relationship that’s doing well, that’s for sure)
my mind reels with all the possibilities for number three…so I’ll just stop here.
January 13th, 2006 at 1:55 pm
Ooooo, Mr. Weller get’s a mention.
I might add:
BB King: ‘Hummingbird’
Four Tops: ‘Walk Away Renee’
Sinead O’Connor: ‘Nothing compares to U’
January 13th, 2006 at 2:19 pm
I’ve very rarely disagreed w/ you over anything, Molly, but I’ve got to here. I hate hate HATE ‘Wonderful Tonight’ by Eric Clapton. By the end of the song, we realize that the person proclaiming his undying affections for his wife is actually staggering drunk. I mean, what kind of love song is THAT, if the only way the guy can think his wife is beautiful is to knock down a few too many at a party.
Oh…and my choices for love songs:
‘Dark Night of the Soul’ by Loreena McKennitt
A different kind of love song for a different kind of love.
‘Losing My Religion’ by REM
Nothing’s better than a love song about a love gone wrong.
‘She Moved Through the Fair’ by Loreena McKennitt
Loreena’s haunting voice adds an ethereal and timeless quality to this traditional Celtic love song. This one’s probably my favorite. Do you sense a Loreena McKennitt theme here?
January 13th, 2006 at 3:31 pm
I still vote for A Fairy Tale in New York from the Pogues because its real and the next two votes would go to any number of Nick Cave love ballads and duets.
January 13th, 2006 at 3:32 pm
Oh and you need whiskey for love songs… unless you’re twenty and don’t have baggage
January 13th, 2006 at 4:27 pm
Try-Macy Gray
Martha My Dear-The Beatles
I Hold Your Hand In Mine-Tom Lehrer
January 13th, 2006 at 4:37 pm
Lizz Wright is a love song
January 13th, 2006 at 5:43 pm

André Gewert reminded me of Cave’s Where the wild Roses Grow. How could I forget it!! It’s the best (although pretty violent)
January 14th, 2006 at 8:21 am
Love the replies from Russ and Nortypig - classic!
Love songs can be whatever was playing nearby when you were in love…something to remind you of special moments. Everyone has mentioned good songs and there are as many different songs that can be love songs as there is for different types of love (I thinnk Matthew Pennell hinted at that too).
January 14th, 2006 at 9:04 am

January 15th, 2006 at 6:25 pm
If my fiancee and I were to pick something, it’d probably be some massive industrial anthem. What’s that “first dance by the married couple” thing called? Bridal waltz or something? We’re planning on a “bridal stomp”
There are a few sappy love songs that I kind of like, but I could never admit to them in public…
January 15th, 2006 at 9:36 pm
only one Molly
Some say love it is a river
that drowns the tender reed
Some say love it is a razer
that leaves your soul to blead
Some say love it is a hunger
an endless aching need
I say love it is a flower
and you it’s only seed…

Green on Red - We Had It All
Smashing Pumpkins - In the Arms of Sleep
Sisters of Mercy - Some Kind of Stranger
X - 4th of July
Okay so that was 4. I said it was hard and regretfully had to leave out “Every Time I Eat Vegatables It Makes Me Think Of You” by the Ramones!

Teenage Kicks, Undertones
Girl of the North Country, Dylan

January 25th, 2006 at 10:54 am

Billy Joel: Just The Way You Are
As suggested in a previous post. You just can’t miss with that one.
Lene Marlin: Leave My Mind
Lovely and sad song. Not too well known though. I’ve also always had a weak spot for Boys II Men: Water Runs Dry.

From one Molly to another, thanks for this post! I ran across it while trying to come up with ideas for a Love Songs CD I’m putting together for a romantic night in Cabo this year. How helpful!
Having been pouring through love songs lately, I thought I’d add my 2 cents, but found it impossible to choose just 3 songs. I can choose 3 songs from a few different categories of love songs, though…
From Movies/Soundtracks:
1-Come What May- from Moulin Rouge (”Like I’ve never seen the sky before…” can you get a better lyric?)
2- Crystal- Stevie Nicks
3- At The Beginning- Richard Marx and Donna Lewis
Modern/Contemporary:
1- What If- Coldplay
2- Just the Way You Are- Billy Joel
3- The Blower’s Daughter- Damien Rice
Classic:
1- L-O-V-E- Nat King Cole
2- Somewhere Beyond the Sea- Frank Sinatra
3- You’re Awful- Also Sintra, I believe….
Country: (you can’t leave out Country when looking at love songs… country music can claim some of the best romantic music out there!)
1- When I Said I Do- Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black
2- Me and You- Kenny Chesney
3- Look Heart, No Hands- Rand Travis
February 5th, 2006 at 10:15 pm
1.Trust-The cure
2.Outside-Staind (the live version makes me tear up everytime i here it)
3.Don’t Fear the Reaper-Blue Oyster Cult

Holy cow. First of all, nice start Molly. Sorry it degraded so quickly (no offense to anyone: I have Neil Diamond’s greatest hits yet realize that I’m not going to woo anyone with track
.
A note: the song ‘You’re beautiful’ by James Blunt is about a psycho who obsesses about a girl he’s never met and then maybe kills himself in the end. LISTEN TO THE LYRICS. Definitely NOT a love song. Or at least not a healthy one. Of course, that’s up to your discretion.
Every step you take…
My three:
Train leaving grey: Mason Jennings
Not fire, not ice: Ben Harper
I will: Beatles
A distant 4 is ‘Funky cold Medina’.
March 2nd, 2006 at 12:38 pm
Okay, I can’t believe I’m submitting this since I supposedly have better things to do, but this was driving me nuts. A quick correction. “You’re beautiful” is officially about an ex-girlfriend Blunt sees on the Tube in London who glances at him, not someone he’s never met. Still a sad, sad, disturbing song. Brilliant, but I wouldn’t recommend it for your wedding reception.
March 6th, 2006 at 12:17 pm

March 18th, 2006 at 4:31 am

1.) Death Cab For Cutie - “I Will Follow You Into The Dark”
2.) Phish - “Waste” (probably not technically a love song, but I interpret it as such)
3.) Fisher - “I Will Love You” (absolutely the most beautiful song ever….)

Hi there Molly,
Just stumbled across your website when I searched on ‘Am I too young for you babe? I wanted to know who sang the song. (probably not a good way to find it!!)
So, I had a bit of a read through your love songs. Incredible, but fantastic, that so many people get involved - does this mean ‘communication’ may have a chance after all? I am staying in Toowoomba in Queensland at a house where the inhabitants watch every ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ episode on DVD plus every ‘Angel’ episode. No words can be spoken while they are on - not sure why, but it does get annoying, even lonely. Pugfish the dog is my best friend. He listens to my philosophies on life and never disagrees - this is pure, unconditional love maybe!!!! (I do bribe him with a walk and a chocolate!)
OK, love songs. No list could be complete without this song, sung by Nick Cave at Michael Hutchence’s funeral (INXS singer).
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Into my arms
Lyrics – Into my arms
I don’t believe in an interventionist God
But I know darling that you do
But if I did I would kneel down and ask Him
Not to intervene when it came to you
Not to touch a hair on your head
To leave you as you are
And if He felt he had to direct you
Then direct you into my arms
Into my arms O Lord; Into my arms O Lord
Into my arms O Lord; Into my arms O Lord
And I don’t believe in the existence of angels
But looking at you I wonder if that’s true
But if I did I would summon them together
And ask them to watch over you
To each burn a candle for you
To make bright and cheer your path
And to walk like Christ in grace and love
And guide you into my arms.
Chorus
But I believe in love
And I know that you do too
And I believe in some kind of path
That we can walk down, me and you
So keep your candles burning
And make her journey bright and pure
That she will keep returning
Always and evermore
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms
Kate & Anna McGarrigle - Heart like a Wheel
(also by Linda Ronstadt)
Savage Garden - Truly, Madly, Deeply
(I sang this song at my wedding in 1997 - now divorced so maybe not a good one!!)
The Troggs - Love is all around
(beautiful - did the bridal waltz to this one)
(Hey, this one had it all really back in the sixties/early seventies)-
(lyrics - Love is all around)
I feel it in my fingers, I feel it in my toes
The love is all around me and so the feeling grows
It’s written in the wind, it’s everywhere I go
So if you really love me, come on and let it show.
There’s no beginning, there’ll be no end
‘cos on your love, I will depend
Monkees - Look out here comes tomorrow
(mentions my nickname Mary that I’m usually called)
Suggestion for next group activity: How many songs can everyone find that mention ‘MARY’? There are a helluva lot that I know of and a lot more probably in existence or What name is most frequently used in love songs!!!
Judy Small – Love is a fearsome thing
(Chorus: Love is a fearsome thing)
Love is a fearsome thing
It pays no mind to the colour of your skin or your gender
Love is a powerful dis-intender
Flies on its own free wing
Love is a fearsome thing
Another song by Judy Small - Dance Leila Dance –
(lyrics - ‘Back to the days when the world breathed romance, When the man in your dreams was the man in your arms, dance Leila dance’
Marianne Faithfull – As Tears go by
(lyrics – As Tears go by)
It is the evening of the day
I sit and watch the children play
Smiling faces I can see but not for me
I sit and watch as tears go by
My riches can’t buy everything
I want to hear the children sing
All I hear is the sound of rain falling on the ground
I sit and watch as tears go by
Ritchie Valens - Teen Angel
(lyrics – Teen Angel)
Teen angel can you hear me
Teen angel can you see me
Are you somewhere up above?
And are you still my one true love?

I can’t believe only one person mentioned “The Luckiest,” by Ben Folds (not Ben Folds Five!)!!! This is the most amazing love song ever. The last verse is a perfect example of when you can’t express in words how much you love someone:
“Next door there’s an old man who lived to his nineties and one day passed away in his sleep/And his wife, she stayed for a couple of days and passed away/I’m sorry I know that’s a strange way to tell you that I know we belong/That I am, I am, I am the luckiest.”
Listen to this song!! The first time I heard it I was moved to tears.

Hey guys, just a quick comment to whoever said “You’re beautiful’ is a song about a ‘psycho’ meeting a woman he has never met
Infact, the song was about an ex-girlfriend of his who he once saw on London tube and realised he was still in love with
So, do listen to it, its a beautiful (if chronically overplayed) love song!
However
Have a listen to
1) Denez Prigent and Lisa Gerrard - Gortoz a Ran, J’attends (yes, its the penultimate song in the film black hawk down)
2) Fields of gold - Sting
3) Collide - Howie Day
September 5th, 2006 at 1:10 am
Wow, it’s tough to pick just 3. It really depends on one’s mood at the moment I think. At the moment I have:
Led Zeppelin:
1) Stairway to Heaven
2) Going to California
Beatles:
1) Here, There and Everywhere
2) Here Comes the Sun
There’s something about “Going to California” that just mesmerizes me every time I hear it. Brilliant piece. Anyway, cool site Molly!
September 5th, 2006 at 1:47 am
Oops, didn’t realize love songs were required. Second try:
1) Love, Me (Collin Raye)
2) I Will Be Here (Steven Curtis Chapman)
3) Crying Sand (Tracy Huang)
The last one is a Mandarin song sung by a Taiwanese singer. It is hauntingly beautiful. Here’s a link to the Real Audio file if you want to hear it:
http://members.tripod.com/~tr1_pod/crying_sand_r.html
Enjoy!

Hello everybody…i agree with each one of you, every song that i’ve found on this website is great. But the songs that i propose are: “My heart can’t tell you no” by Rod Stewart, “Stay (Faraway,So close) by U2 and “Come down to me” by Saving Jane.
Those are my choices, just because i dont know the title of a song that says something like this…”…is this what it is, to ve loved and to know that…”
Anyway, if someone or even you Molly, have heard something like that please let me know what is the title/singer name.
Good Bye.

It’s obscure, I know, but find Christine Lavin “The Kind of Love You Never Recover From”
This is The Kind of Love You Never Recover From
Don’t tell me that I’m gonna find another one to take your place
I never will escape the truth
At times like this
When the moon is bright
When the air is foggy like it is tonight
I’ll think how sweet life could be
If you would stay with me
Oh stay with me
This is The Kind of Love You Never Recover From

OK.. i did not look thru all these responses… but i could list several, as an oldie u would have to include “Time in a Bottle” by Jim Croce, Lifehouse has about 3 really good ones.. “Hanging by a Moment”(which is usually mislabeled on many download sites as-(Fallen Even More in Love With You), “Everything(Beautiful), and “You and Me”, Seethers “Broken” is pretty good… “We Might Fall” by Ryan Starr is good, “Iris”, “Name”, and “I’ll be Your Biggest Fan” all by the GooGoo Dolls are all good, “Far Away” by Nickelback and “When I See You Smile” by Bad English… all good, i could go on for another 15-20 songs probablt.. but i’ll stop there… if people reading this have not heard some of these songs.. download them, u will enjoy… oh.. another old one.. “i cant fight this feeling” by REO Speedwagon and Chicago had a couple good ones in the 80s also.. bye

Fisher - I will love you
Coldplay - yellow

you really need to rethink that “Wonderful Tonight”. Bryce in an earlier post could be mistaken about the lyrics. Depending upon the timing of when the song was written and the event Eric is singing about….it could be a song about infidelity.
go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonderful_Tonight
and then re-listen to the song.
