Geek Dinner Thanksgiving

For the first time in my entire 42 years, I spent Thanksgiving, typically my favorite US holiday, outside of the US.
So maybe it was pizza, nachos, cheesy fries and little sausages instead of a turkey feast, but I can’t imagine a better way to give thanks than to celebrate friendship, fun, and the Web at a London Geek Dinner.
I am so very honoured (note British spelling) and had a wonderful evening. There’s a Flickr photo pool and even a podcast snippet, available for play at The Angel Blog, of the event.
In a year that’s taken me around the world about four times, I have to say it’s a truly wonderful feeling to know that I have an amazing extended family. No matter my personal struggles of late, one thing is abundantly clear: I have been blessed very, very richly with a tribe of friends and colleagues of the utmost intelligence, kindness and beauty.
For that gift, I am deeply thankful. So here’s a toast (with my morning tea) to all of you, my beloved tribe.

It was great to see you again. Hopefully this was not a once-off event.
Have a good flight back, and see you when you reach these shores again.
Oh, if you are in Heathrow terminal one, Google’s just opened a GoogleSpace lab where travellers can kill some time playing with the Google applications. Its kind of a usability testing thing if I read it right. The story made the frontpage of Slashdot this morning.
I might drop by when I’m there week after next.

Molly, it was great to meet you. Thanks for a lovely podcast interview, and really sorry that I lost most of it! I’m really kicking myself for that. You are such a good speaker. Hope to catch you again with a microphone another time.

All I can say Molly is, Thursday night was so fantastic! You and everyone in the room made it the best Geek dinner I’ve been to ever.
Next time your over I got somewhere planned which is kinda quirky but ever so perfect.

Hooray for the Geek Dinner! It was marvellous to meet you and all the other geeks who turned up. I’m still pleasantly amazed that the web design industry is so open that a practical unknown can spend an evening eating, drinking and discussing “Ball Grabbing Over IP” with some of the leaders in the field.
Here’s to the next one!

Are there every any Geek Dinner-type things in the Washington, D.C. area? Yeah, I’m sure people are always inquiring about their particular area, but there only seem to be a few hotspots for designers to meet. I don’t really have the time to fly to London all the time…

Thursday was a really enjoyable night out with fellow standardistas.

Hey Molly,
I’m starting to feel left out, what with all these conferences and geek dinners in the UK, but I’m just o’er the pond in Ireland
Anyway, I’m glad you enjoyed your stay in the good old UK. I’m gonna have to make it to one of these web conferences just to share the vibes and meet some of you awesome people.
I’d love to meet you someday, you bring such enthusiasm to web standards which we should all care about.

Hey the Geek Dinner was excellent, hope you had a fantastic thanksgiving Molly.
I’ve been thinking that we need more/some meet ups in the North East of England so I’m working on maybe getting some web standards people and accessibility folks together to combine with a local Usability/Accessibility group we have up here.
If anyone’s interested in either a Geek Dinner or just a get together of some sorts in Newcastle this February drop me a comment on my blog post - Geek Dinner North East style? and lets see what we can coem up with.
