Courses & Events: Portland and Seattle
PORTLAND, SEATTLE OR BUST! July’s got some rockin’ fun events going on. Here’s what I’ll be up to, be sure to check the respective sites for more details as to an awesome lineup of speakers and events in the Northwest – a great place to be in midsummer here in the U.S.
Zen of CSS Design | Thursday 14 July 2005
Portland State University, Urban Center, 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Now that we have the CSS Zen Garden to show us that designing with CSS can be profoundly beautiful and very different from what we used to do with table-based layouts, how do designers get from here to there? This session will discuss primary issues and challenges associated with getting up to speed with CSS – based layouts. Whether you code by hand, work in Photoshop, or use a package such as Dreamweaver (or all of the above!) if you’re interested in using CSS for your sites, this session is for you. You’ll see some of the most beautiful CSS Zen Garden designs – many described in the Zen of CSS Design book co-authored by Holzschlag along with Dave Shea, the garden’s curator. You’ll gain insight into how the designers created specific effects, and learn important issues related to working with CSS to make your designs as progressive and beautiful, too.
Visit the host site for more information, related events and registration.
Webvisions 2005 | Friday 15 July 2005
Portland, Oregon, Oregon Convention Center, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
There are tons of excellent presentations by a mind-boggling list of speakers, you can find out more and register at the Webvisions 2005 site. I’m presenting, on a panel, and doing a book signing as follows:
- Looking Beyond the Desktop. Many designers and developers working with or moving toward working with Web standards are likely aware that XHTML and CSS were both built with numerous devices in mind. In fact, when Tim Berners Lee and his colleagues developed the Web, one of the primary goals was for it to be device independent. With XHTML, that goal is realized, and CSS plays a growing role in styling documents not only for the screen, but for numerous output media including print, handheld, aural, and even TV. This session will highlight the historical reasons for device independence, the current ways we can use XHTML and CSS for alternate media, and what to expect in the future. 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
- The Future of Content. Panel discussion along with Nick Finck, D. Keith Robinson and Kevin Smokler. As technologies mature over time content will become more important to stakeholders and decision makers. The focus will shift from presentation to content even more so than in the past and it will directly impact how many of us work. We invite you to join Nick Finck, Molly Holzschlag, D. Keith Robinson and Kevin Smokler as they explore the issues facing web content today and the technologies that are changing the landscape of tomorrow.
- Book Signing. Come say hi, buy a book (Zen of CSS Design and Spring Into HTML and CSS) or bring one to be signed, 2:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m., at the conference center.
Web Design World: Seattle | 18 July 2005
Marriott Waterfront Hotel, 18 – 20 July for full conference (I’m only presenting on Monday).
For a full listing of great speakers and for registration, see the event site. I’ll be presenting the following sessions:
- The Marriage of Presentation and Structure with Matt May. You hear it all the time in the world of HTML and CSS: separate structure from presentation. That’s true in theory, but in the real world, presentation and structure are often strongly related. Without understanding the relationship of a document’s structure to the style sheets that enable you to create beautiful designs, you’re at a disadvantage when attempting to resolve conflicts, use advanced CSS selectors effectively, and gain better control over every aspect of your work. Learn the right way to marry presentation and structure — and get the power you need to move your CSS designs forward in creative, compelling ways. 10:15 a.m. – 11:15 a.m.
- The How and Why of Blogging. Web logs, or “blogs,” aren’t just for personal sites — not by a long shot. Sites of all kinds can employ blogs and blog-creation tools to keep visitors informed and up to date. Learn what blogs can do for your site and for your business, and see the best tools for creating and maintaining them. 3:15 p.m. – 4:15 p.m.
- From HTML to XHTML. XHTML is, according to the World Wide Web Consortium, “the next step in the evolution of the Internet.” By migrating to XHTML, you can gain XML’s benefits while retaining strong backward and future compatibility. Whether you’re ready to make the move to XHTML or you’re just curious about the differences between HTML and XHTML, this session is for you. Learn the rationale behind XHTML, how to author it properly, how well it’s supported across today’s software, and how to get started using it today. 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.
Blogging the Stratosphere | 19 July 2005
This one is from the “too cool” department, particularly for a girl like me who’s fascinated by aviation and addicted to blogging. A group of invited bloggers will be getting on Connexion One, a Boeing 737-400 used to demonstrate the Connexion by Boeing signature high-speed in-flight Internet service. We’ll be blogging, photoblogging and podcasting the event from the sky, before being whisked off to a winery for a great dinner. Watch this space for photos and impressions as bloggers take off for adventuresome fun.
Will you be in the Portland or Seattle areas on any of these dates? If so, check out the conferences and events, and let me know!

Damn how I wish I could be there for just any of them.
I so need to move to the States so that I can attend these! *sob*
I sense a lot of emphasis on the word ‘blog’…and there’s that CSS Zen Garden again…
As Faruk said – it would be great to attend these events but distance, schedule, and cold-hard currency (and the lack of it) really have decided that I can’t get there! (No ’sob’ from me though cos I’m obviously not as soft and fluffy as Faruk!)
Have a great time at the events! More pics on Flickr eh?

Good grief. You guys need to come back to Japan. This sorta thing rarely takes place. Even better, bring a conference to Okinawa…
