The Geekiest Thing You’ve Ever Done
WHAT’S THE GEEKIEST THING YOU’VE EVER DONE?
While I probably have a long list of them, the other day has to be one of the more memorable. Drew McLellan and I met up at the Tate Modern in London, then went over to meet with Rachel Andrew and the small person, pick them up, and go off for some rest and relaxation.
Rachel and the small person were still busy, so Drew and I sat in his car in a seedy part of London with lots of student housing all around. What’s the first thing we do? Grab our computers and see if we can find an open WiFi network. Which we did.
So there we sat waiting, checking email, showing each other photos on Flickr, reading blogs, and even live blogging the experience.
Truly funny, truly geeky!
Your turn.

Daryl: Yes…you geek!
One time when I was writing an in class essay I misspelled a word. Immediately I tried to hit command Z on my desk to undo my error. Horribly geeky.
I put 2 webcams at next to my window and made them my wallpaper
so i can see what happens outside without looking through the window
Purchased software … with my PayPal VISA.
I’ve logged 100+ days onto my favorite MMORPG game… and if that’s not bad enough, just about all of my friends are people I’ve met from the game…
Granted, dozens of the 100+ days were just from leaving my computer on all night.
Oh, 100+ days IN THE PAST YEAR
Let’s see:
- Wardriving in Lisbon. Anoying other drivers, because of driving so slow: “Here, pull over here!! NOW!”. “No! Keep driving.. sloooow, slooowww”. You get the idea.
- Having some pleasure in handcoding HTML on Notepad and refreshing the browser, to see the page taking shape.
At a bachelor party, I used a plastic drink stirrer to reprogram a stripper’s malfunctioning watch.
@Daniel: That one made me laugh. I almost woke my fiancee up
How about being up since 3:30AM reading all 390+ new posts in bloglines… including this one.
Justin: Go to bed man! #Laughs #
Okay, one more bit of geekiness from me…I’ve just posted on John Oxton’s site and it reminded me that incident I mentioned was quite geeky!
(My exact words): “…Mmm, about that monitor age thing…err, my monitor was 5 years old too…and internal dust accumilation (yeah – who cleans inside their monitors?) caused it to catch fire while I was using it in March! My monitor….up in flames!! I was lucky I had recently bought an electrical-specific fire extinguisher only a few weeks before it happened.”
I bought a ’special’ fire extinghisher for the possibility of my computer catching fire because I use it so much! SUPER-GEEKY.
(And then the monitor does go up in flames – that’s insane!)
- building a website for my eldest son the night after he was born (on a tilde-account!)
- naming my second son Tim (as in TimBL)
- iChatting with wife.app even though she is just one flight up
I described myself as a CSS once…
body {
height: 71in;
}
#hair, #eyes {
color: #a52a2a;
}
#waist {
width: 32in;
}
#butt {
padding: 0;
/*I’ve been doing yoga*/
}
#stomach {
padding: 0 1.5in;
/*Need more crunches*/
}
p {
color: yellow;
}
Another geeky thing? How about how I messed up the formatting with my last post?
Sorry about that.
using VeriChat on my treo 600 to log on to messenger to see what time my gf wanted to go for pizza while riding on my bike home from work. i could have just called her.
Several years ago as a hobby, I taught myself how to program in Lotus 1-2-3 for Windows (Rel 5). Over the course of about 6 months, I developed BLACKJACK STAT, a statistics-laden blackjack game and then tried to sell it for $21/copy via direct mail ads in my local newspaper. Gave up after losing a few hundred dollars.
I once entered a redesign contest for designbyfire.com that never mounted to anything.
I searched photos for my address book of people I never met or talked to.
Geekiest thing I’ve ever done in my semi-geeky life (or so I say right?). :p
I went through the trouble of designing an interface with nice buttons that had up/over/down states. Sliced it all up and exported every single piece and all the states. Brought them all into Macromedia Director and programmed the buttons to open programs on my computer. Finally exported the whole thing as an exe file that would run on my desktop as a quick & easy interface to run my most oft-used programs from cuz I don’t want to clutter my desktop with a gajillion shortcuts and too lazy to go into Start > Progra… yadda, yadda, yawn…
Zulema:
Check out Object Dock for a Mac OSX style menu for Windows XP
(one of) the geekiest thing(s) I’ve ever done was probably coding a web based application for our March Madness office pool at the newspaper I worked for. Three days before the tournament, the sales manager asked if we could make a bracket for our subscribers… My boss told him there wasn’t enough time. After their meeting, I went in and told him that I already had one done. It’s still in use for all of their march madness promotions to this day.
ERNesbitt: I have objectdock on my Win XP Pro!
The geekiest thing I have ever done was went on this website.
The geekiest thing I have ever done,
was I bought a bag of flies at the flea market. In Malina a newly found delicate planet.
For father’s day a couple of years ago, my kids gave me one of those watches that syncs off the atomic clock in Colorado. it even had a little satellite dish icon above the time. one night i was at the local healthfood store and ordered a sandwich to go from the deli. They said that it was 8:00 and they weren’t making food anymore. I looked at my watch and said that it was actually only ten til eight. so the cook had to disagree and i blurted out that “my watch is synced to the atomic clock in Fort Collins, Colorado and I KNEW what time it was.” – of all the code i’ve written, all the sci fi movies i’ve seen, that was truly my geekiest moment.
did i really post that?
Did I really just do a whole post on how to sing “Happy Birthday” better?
Holy cow.
I think I now have an entry for “The Geekiest Thing You’ve Ever Done”.
It’s a shining moment.
…
Heh. There’s my post.
Other geekiest thing: night before my wedding, I’m out for a family dinner. Had read a funny bit online that I thought was funny, so I tried to squeeze it in at an appropriate moment:
“I guess it’s trying to be this year’s #eeeeee!”
Crickets and tumbleweeds at that one…
I am not a geek.
(Most of the time)I don’t know what I am doing (which I think qualifies me for not being geeky?) BUT I had a geeky moment when I was feeling homesick – and ended up checking out the traffic-webcam in my home town!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/travel/jamcams/camloco/549702.shtml (I might get one of my relatives to stand on the corner and wave while I am watching – now THAT would be pretty geeky!)
I once had to check to see if I looked tidy enough to go into a meeting without junting round for a comb or a tie without sauce on it – and couldn’t be bothered to find a mirror – so I just turned my webcam on and used that to check.
These are just funny!
My latest: I use MSN Messenger on my iPAQ via GPRS because it’s cheaper to pay for the data than to pay for an SMS (or 4). 20 minutes on MSNM = ~40c =
Programmed a digital randomizer for the game “Twister” after a partynight where we desperatly to play the game, but no one had an analog version of it. This was the first time I got afraid of becoming a geek.
So if you are ever in need for a digital wheel of twister, than you can use this on:
http://stud.hgkz.ch/dan.voelzke/twister.html
I got even so geeky and paranoid that I just realized that what I did would maybe result in legal consequences for me because of making something like this public. Hope no one at MB is reading this blog. Going to delete the page. Sorry folks, you got to use the “oldschool” version!

cheers.
Using your story as a comparison I am now attempting but failing to find a story in the recent past (I’m already back 3 years… so far nothing…) where I once did this thing that in no reasonable variation could be considered not-geeky.
Damn.
if it’s not too late: I’d like to nominate the latest post by Eric Meyer’s for uber-geek experience:

Arguing nuclear fallout and knowing the exact location of a nuclear explosion analysis book in the library stacks takes more than a few brain matter cells.
The geekiest thing I ever done?
I could tell you…
…but then I’d have to kill myself…
IM conversations with my Mother who was in the next room.
Participating in the 24 hour Blogathon to raise money for the Noah’s Ark Appeal.
Oh, and buying a laptop so that I could sit in my backyard and blog from outside.
The geekiest thing I have ever done was one time I drove all the way from CA to Chicago and back the next day just for a slice of pizza.
I bought a sealed copy of Windows 1.0 off of eBay for $300
I also have a Dell server in my room running debian Linux, heh
in Tokyo, rigging an umbrella so that my laptop can sit out on the (railing of the) veranda in the rain, utilizing neighbor’s WLAN, so that I can sit inside at the end of a long headset cable and skype home to Maine.
[...] La cosa mas geek que hás hecho Discusión en el blog de Molly Holzschlag acerca de que es los más geek que alguien ha hecho, algunos de los comentarios son extremos. [...]
I spent a whole british bank holiday weekend debugging the subroutines for my lego robotic arm located in my home lab.
We all agree that the geekiest thing we have ever done is sit here, in kinky_pinky_28’s living room, watching the intermaweb on her 40″ HD LCD TV (from afar) with a remote keyboard and mouse at sillyoclock in the morning discussing the geekiest things that other people had ever done, and deeming some to clearly be ungeekys, and others to be totally rad.
Then we asked each other what the geekiest thing we had ever done was, and thus we were led to writing this post.
Well the geekiest thing i have ever done is when me and my girl friend were having some fun in bed and she wanted to be tied up the only thing i could find to do it with was a very long usb cable.
So yea ive played sex games using computer cableing.
