Things To Do On Long Plane Rides

Japan www2005 conference

I’M LOOKING FOR SUGGESTIONS as to what to do on a long airplane ride.

Tomorrow I fly to Japan’s Narita airport in Chiba City, where I’ll be attending and presenting at the WWW2005 conference. It’s my first trip ever to Japan!

It’s a long haul. I’ll not be in a business class seat (although Economy Plus is manageable) alas, but I will have my PowerBook, my iPod, my noise cancellation headphones, two novels, a sketchbook and a pen. I’m not certain as to whether those EP seats have power, if they do, that’ll be good, but if not, I have to be prepared.

As most readers know, I’m a pretty seasoned traveler, but long hauls can get really boring and I’m a crappy sleeper anywhere, much less amidst a crowd.

Any suggestions? Humorous or practical, have at it.

all you people say “bring a portable dvd player and a lot of dvds”. but the battery on my portable dvd player last for only 2.5 hours. Thats only 1.5 movies. or you could bring another rechargable battery for the dvd player. so just bring like 5 good movies.

  10. Shazinoz says:

I am about to travel from Australia to USA (14+ hrs on the plane + time at 2 plane changes)
Some of the above list helped but most it was just repeats…
    Here are my Ideas…

Most “long haul” flights and modern plane have tv screens on the backs of the seats 9in ALL classes you have access to these individual TV screens) and most of these have movies on demand (not at set times, or if they do have them at set times they have multiple channels), on this “entertainment system” you also have access to music, computer games, informaiton on where the plane is in the world, including a map, and the details outside the plane, i.e temperature, altitude etc etc (this is REALLY interesting).
Most long haul flights include meals that start about 1-3hrs after take off and you can usually also have snacks and dirnks when ever youwant them.

I HATE all of the ideas of making a nuicance of yourself becasue everyone else on the plane is bored too, but the last thing they want to deal with is someone being a total moron (i mean it is like sitting next to a balling child the whole flight who wont shut up or a id kicking you seat for the whole flight (NOT ON)…

    I personally am taking
    * my book (current novel I am reading + the sequel or another book I have been looking forward to reading, I can read in a plane (but NOT in a car as I get sick)).
    * lollies/ candy/ Snacks (things to help keep mouth moist + mints to get rid of any yucky tastes (also good if the person next to you has bad bre4ath as you can offer them one discretely without making a deal of it etc) Remember that there are now STRICT limits on carrying liquids, gels and aerosols (so any snacks etc that are liquid (like even a bottle of water) must be less than 100ml and inside a single 20cm x 20cm clear plastic bag (i.e. zip lock bag) and put through security seperately This goes for bubble blowing solution or ANYTHING.
    * a headset (as I cange planes in the US to go from LA to Washington you have to pay for headsets to use the entertainment system (so I will take my MP3 Player and can use the headset for the entertainment system and also it is great to use during the times between flights/ planes/ stopovers.
    * I have made up a “travel” version of scattergories (simply print out the alphabet and cut out and place in a small plastic bag, then make up categories (or use the ones in the game), then during the flight you can get out a list and the bag of alphabet bits, chose a letter reandomly and then try to answer all of the categories of the list with answers beginning with that letter 9this can be really ard with letters like X, Q, Z etc).
    * I am taking my PDA it has a few agmes on it and I am going to down load a few more free ones off the net beofre I travel (make sure you charge it before you go and again at stopovers etc if you need to just check batery level).
    * Puzzle Books (any kind of puzzles you like word searches, logic puzzles are always great or a mixed puzzle book and try starting at puzzle one and seeing if you can do all of the puzzles in order).
    * While sleepig etc is great, if you sleep the whole time or taking sleeping tablets etc you can have big issues with jet lag when you land.
    * Small craft projects (OK, you aren’t allowed knitting needles and such things on planes now due to increased security etc) but how about a
small sewing/ needlepoint project, or crocheting (maybe print out instructions on how to crochet etc and teach yourself during the flight (make something simple (like squares for a blanket) and donate it to a charity when you return home), or maybe a friendship band kit (or print out instructions and items needed try to cut up what you can before the flight as you may not be allowed scissors on the flight(again you could give these to family or friends or donate them to charities for sale etc), origami (print out some instructions or buy a book and buy some small sized origami papers (these are squares of paper in assorted colours)), thos scoubi things that you knot to make different things (you can print out patterns and make differnt things), .
    *

  11. Shazinoz says:

    AH Damb computer I wasn’t finished…
    * DIY craft kits (you can buy some in small boxes etc that include everything you need, make sure it is not messy or against security rules).
    * Write a travel journal especially if this is your first time on a long haul or overseas journey (How your travels have been so far, what meals you have eaten (what your choices were), what movies you have watched etc, what you did before leaving home for your trip, i.e travel insurance, booking tickets, changing currency (include dates and times, where you did it etc, you could include the cost as well so that during your trip whenever you buy something or spend money you could add this to your journal and then at the end see what the trip really cost you (do it in the currency of the country you are travelling in (what you spend there) and then convert it to your currency when you return home(). Pick on e of the frint pages and write down all of the emergency numbers you might need (i.e travel insurance numbers, passport/ embassy numbers, hotel numbers, emergency services in that country (yes they are different in all countries in Australia it is 000 for emergency ambulance, police and fire services but in the USA (where I am going) it is 911). You can buy a travel journal or simply use a notebook, what a great way to remember your (first) trip..
    * A sandwich or one such “meal”, if you are a picky eater as you may not like the meal offered and this way you have at least one meal to get your through, if you do like the meals then you can either eat it or toss it out later, but if you don’t have it with you , then you may go hungry.
    * If you have a big event coming up in the future (a wedding, 2st birthday etc etc) then you can spend some of the time doing the planning for these events, guest lists, seating plans and other planning.
    * Try to think of things that you enjoy that are easy to do, don’t take a lot of euipment and don’t annoy others.

    * Look on the airlines website to see what they offer in the way of meals (Complimentary etc), headphones (complimentary etc), what entertainment services they have such as TV, Movies, Games etc, as well as if they supply a complientary amenities kit and kids activity kits (if youa re or have kids with you), these sites will usually also tell you if you have the facilities to plug in electrical devices eetc to charge them. This can make it easier to knw what you need to pack with you for “life” onboard a long haul flight.

On another related subject, things to pack in your onbard bag to make the trip more comfortable…

    * a bean filled or blow up pillow (while a lot of airlines do have pillows yu can use, you might in fact want an extra one to make things more comfortable (or your airline may not have pillows at all), something that doesn’t take up too much room etc.
    * Some snacks (like I stated before make sure the conform to the new strict security rules about liquids and gels and aerosols etc), while most long haul etc airlines supply complementary meals as well as snacks on demand, you may get a little peckish or want a certain favourite on the plane (things like gum or chewable lollies for take off and landing (especially if you have ear troubles), chocolate, lollies to suck on to keep your mouth moist etc.
    * slippers (yes slippers, something light and easy to pack and that desn;t take up a lot of room (I use a hard or soft soled ballet slipper kind), if you are on a long haul flight your shoes can get very uncomfortable as your feet can swell etc witht he pressure changes and especially if youare in economy classes where you can’t put your feet up, this also protects your socks and keeps your feet warm (I have to wear travel socks to help prevent swelling in my legs etc and these are expensive so the slippers help prevent damage to my socks).
    * Any and ALL medications you take or might need during the flight (some say to carry all of your medical supplies in your onvoard bag but if you are travelling for a long time (weeks+) and/or take a lot of medications then there may not be enough room in your onboard bag (although medical supplies are NOT giverend by the rules of the onboard bag (i.e you can carry these in a seperate bag that is allowed in excess to your normal onboard bag, the strict rules baout aerosols, liquids and gels also do not apply to medications) but make sure you have enoughf or the flight and for at least a few days/ week in case your bag is lost/ misplaced, if you can put all of your medications in your onboard bag…
    * pens, pencils, highlighters, erasers, notpad etc (these can be used for MANY different things the highlighter is great for wordsearch puzzles etc).
    * lip gloss Or lip balm stuff (yes for guys too – obviously not lip gloss but a Lip balm tube.
    * toothpaste and toothbrush (some airlines on long haul flights supply you with a small amenities kit (yes even in Economy which in the basic form includes a toothbrush, toothpaste, eye mask and ear plugs)). Remember that there are now STRICT limits on carrying liquids, gels and aerosols (so any snacks etc that are liquid (like even a bottle of water) must be less than 100ml and inside a single 20cm x 20cm clear plastic bag (i.e. zip lock bag) and put through security seperately.
    * Moisturiser (for guys and girls) Remember about the liquid rules for security above.
    * Deoderant (for guys and girls) Remember about the liquid/ aerosol rules for security above.
    * Body spray (scented spray) Remember about the liquid/ aerosol rules for security above.
    * Eye Drops (You can get sore gritty eyes especially if you can’t sleep well, a couple of little containers of individual eye drops can be VERY handy (get the ones that have individual containers inside and NOT the one bottle as once they are open they have a short life span and the individual ones take up less room, just chuck a couple in your bag.
    * Emery Board (NOT a Nail file as they are against the security policy of most airlines these days), these can be used to fix your nails of course, but also in an emergency to cut thread etc.
    * A Haribrush or Comb (if you want/ need one).
    * Your travel documents – passport, plane tickets, any letters needed to carry medications and medical supplies, visa’s, departure card. arrival card,
    * Tissues (can be used for more than blowing nose (can be used if there is no toilet paper, for small cuts etc etc)
    * Small pack of wet wipes (these can be used to freshen up face (arm pits) and anywhere else needed as well as being used to clean up spills on clothes, and on skin).
    * Sox – Wear either special travel sox (the ones to help prevent DVT etc) or wear soft sox with a loose top band to prevent the added constriction against your lower legs especially if your legs swell on the flight, I now wear travel sox but used to wear “bed socks” as they were soft, warm and had a loose top band.
    * Watch or other time telling device (your PDA, Mobile Phone etc) Remember that mobile/ cell phones are not allowed to be turned on, on a lot of flights/ airlines.
    * Cash (yes on some flights/ airlines you have to buy your meals and headphones, as some cash can be very handy).
    * Headphones (so you don’t have to buy any, if your airline doesn’t supply them (look on the airlines website to see what they offer in the way of meals (Complimentary etc), headphones (complimentary etc), what entertainemtn services they have
    * A jumper or jacket (this can double as a blanket if you get sold and the airline either don’t supply them or it isn’t warm enough for you).
    * Dress in Layers (yes so that you can take off and put on the layers to get your temperature just right (I personally usually wear a t-shirt, a long sleeve t-shirt and a polar fleece jumper/ jacket (when packing wear your bulkiest jacket/ jumper on the airplane to make more room in your suitcase))).
    * If you are short (in leg etc) then it can be worth while packing some of your smaller items in a lunchbox or small platic container that you can plac eon the floor so that your legs can sit on this and thus they don’t hang which can get uncomfortable after a long flight Youcan even place some velcro on it so that you can velcro it to the carpet floor so it doesn’t slide about, you could also probably use a blow up pillow or your backpack (the blow up pillows etc can also be used for feet/ calf exercixes by simply pumping your feet back and forth, up and down etc on it , thus reducing the risk of DVT etc).
    * Alternatively if you are long in the leg etc you may want to pack a blow up pillow/ cushion as this can be placed under your butt, thu raising you up and taking the pressure off the bakcs of your legs etc making you more comfortable (the blow up pillows etc can also be used for feet/ calf exercixes by simply pumping your feet back and forth, up and down etc on it , thus reducing the risk of DVT etc).
    * zip lock bags (these can be used for many many different things), like a leaking bottle, or placing the uneaten contents of a bag of candy etc in so they don’t spill, to placing garbage etc in. I ALWAYS carry a couple (2-4 in 2-3 different sizes – sandwich size most handy) on my onboard bag and more in my suitcase.
    * small first aid kit – a couple of bandaids (adhesive bandages), a couple of asprin or other mild headache/ pain killer tablets (i.e paracetamol, ibuprofen, advil etc), throat lozenge, If you suffer from sinus problems then pack an antihistamine and a nasal spray (Fess, a simple salt water spray is VERY handy and versitile), sanitary items for women (remember that sanitary napkins make great emergency wound dressings), even if you are not expeciting your cycle (stress and emotions can bring on your cycle) pack a couple of your regular items just in case, it may not be you in need either you could help out a fellow passenger in dire need, antacid (such as mylanta rolltabs, in case you get indegestion from the airline food etc), small amount of dental floss (just remove some from a roll or carry a dental floss pick or two, incase you get something stuck between your teeth (as this can be very uncomfortable on a long flight).
    * Any of the things you decide to take to help fill in the time onboard and between flights.

Hope this helps someone else in there planning of long haul flights (or other travel)…

Look on the airlines website(s) to see what they offer in the way of meals (Complimentary or you have to pay for them an example menu for your travel class etc), headphones (complimentary or you have to buy them and how much In what currency etc), what entertainment services they have such as TV, Movies, Games etc (whether they are on demand, on individual screens or if there are just a couple of screens down the centre of the plane), as well as if they supply a complientary amenities kit and/or kids activity kits (if you are or have kids with you), these sites will usually also tell you if you have the facilities to plug in electrical devices etc to charge them. This can make it easier to know what you need to pack with you for “life” onboard a long haul flight.

Ok I have thought of and found some ideas that are security allowed and should fill in some time…

I LOVE to do crafts etc but my normal crafts are not allowed (I knit toys for kids – Not Allowed etc).
So here are some crafts and other things that I bought this week and have packed for my upcoming 25 hr trip (YES 25 HRS)…

    * Those Scoubi things (plastic cords that you knot together to make things)
    * Oragimi Kit (small 10cm square papers with instructions to make about 8 things)
    * Friendship Bracelets (cord/ thread that you knot/ tie together in set ways to make bracelets (I will give these to my nieces later inthe year for gifts (include with there xmas gifts etc)I have cut the threads up into the lengths that the instructions state (I have 4 different styles) – download/ print instructions off the Net and buy some embroidery cotton or other thin cord.
    * A Small Needlepoint Kit (I am not sure if this is allowed but I can’t see why it wouldn’t get through security, it would just depend on if the onboard staff allow it).
    * Small Drawing/ Sketch Pad and Pencils/ erasers.
    * Novels/ Books to Read
    * Small Puzzle Books
    * Notepad
    * Snacks (mainly lollies and potato crisps, iclude zip lock bags to keep uneaten portions and prevent spills)
    * MP3 Player (loaded with my music)
    * PDA (Loaded with Games as wel as the basics like Word/ calender etc)
    * My Home made Scattergories Game (that I mentioned above)

As well as the above items, my airline ((I am flying Qantas in Economy) provides a personal entertainment system (free including the headset)for all passengers on the backs of seats with a controller in the armrest) Movies on Demand, Computer Games, Music Channels, as well as cool information such as the temperature outside the plane, altitude, location on a map, time etc etc), if you add to this meals, snacks (Qantas now provides a snack pack for passengers in Economy called Snack on Q – and I have some of my own), sleep. I think I should have enough to keep me occupied for the suration of the trip(including flights, time between planes etc etc…

Good Luck to everyone else who is planning a Long Haul Flight, just remember that the destination is well worth the hassle of the trip (if you plan and think ahead you can fill in the time, without too much trouble)…

  14. Ross says:

I have a lot of flights at the end of the year, London to Narita is 15 hours non-stop then later on to Cairns Sydney Bali and back home so many hours…
I find the best way to pass time is to just chill and take in the cabin, other occupants, location of toilets, what is in my seat pocket etc for the first 40 mins then start to worry about being bored.
Most airlines have individual screens now for genuine long haul flights (over 8 hours) these show around 3-4 feature films covering some 6-9 hours, entertainment channels with some reasonable content which covers some 10+ hours, obviously the crappy radio channels etc.
I take my ipod with me, cram a few videos on it (life on mars is on there now)
this can keep me occupied for a couple of extra hours, plus my trusty PSP and a few games (yet this I play on the least as I get bored very quickly on it..)
the hardest part I find is after 10 hours flying time my attention span has declined so much I cant do anything for more than 30 mins so I read or watch a short episode of something.
My problem is before my next flight I am planning on buying something new to occupy our time and I cant decide between a pair of video glasses (8 hour battery) to use with the ipod thus avoiding the tiny screen for ages.. or this ipod dock which has a 7″ screen and plays dvd’s but only has a 2 1/2 hour battery life… arghhhh

  15. mile says:

i am going to las vegas. you shoud bring your ipod, dvd player, your ds, phone, and fun stuff.

  16. B&A&E says:

Borrow a friend’s small child or two. Then you won’t have to worry about being bored as they will constantly climb all over you, spill things in their own lap and yours, desperately need to go to the bathroom when there is turbulence or a long line, and finally fall asleep in such a position that are you unable to reach any of the fun things you have packed for yourself. Doesn’t that sound fun? Well, that’s what I’m going to be doing on my flight from Japan with my 3 year old and 6 month old. Happy travels to those sitting around us!
BTW, you have probably already taken this trip but if not, take a few snacks as the flights to/from Japan tend to offer meals you may or may not enjoy unless you already like Japanese food.

Bring along some mini sizes of cleanser, toner, moisturiser, face mask, eye mask. Pop your hair back in a band, give yourself a beauty treatment, sit back and relax with a nice cold drink and read a magazine. That’ll kill an hour. Then maybe paint your nails – that’ll kill 30 minutes.
Enjoy your flight. we are flying to the maldives in March and I can’t wait for the journey and to get there :-)

  29. lilausty says:

well im going to England from Australia in September, the flight will be around 22hrs nonstop plus 3hrs worth of stop ova time. I get bored fairly easily but and the last time I went on a plane trip that long was 15years ago.
I feel that after about 14 hours most of the above recommendations would not really work (except maybe sleep). Can you come up with stuff to do from the 14hr to the 22hr stage of the flight!!!

  30. Nick says:

I am going to Mexico on wednesday it is a 7 hour flight can anybody tell me what to bring on the airplane

  31. Jennifer says:

Well I would really recommend magazines. fashion magazines mainly because they have those who wore it best things and i always try to guess what the magazine picked. If your going to japan then go onto a free translator on the internet and type in “would you help me on my quest to kill the evil dragon” and show it to any Japanese people sitting near you. See what they do!

  32. Keelley says:

  41. My_Name_Is_My_Business says:

Well, I am only 11, but I have had some fun on airplanes. Being an unacompanied minor is THE BEST because your parents aren’t there to keep you out of trouble! these are some great things to do if you are flying alone.

-Put a LOT of gum in your mouth, wait until a flight attendant passes, stand up, follow her for a while, and blow a really loud bubble right behind her, and when she looks back, start talking to the nearest person like you knew each other.

    -Smack your food really loudly

-Ask random people for their autograph.

-wait until someone goes into the bathroom, and even if you don’t have to go, stand next to the bathroom door holding your krotch, and say to the flight attendant “Can I use first class bathroom?” and if she says no, ask for a cup. she will let you use first class, and you can spend a long tome in there looking at the fancy stuff.

    -Text your friends.

    -crosswords are great.

-Stare at the person next to you for a long time and than say really loudly, pointing at them “You’re one of THEM!”

That is all i can think of!!!

  42. freeto says:

I know this is a couple of years too late, but a Japanese phrase book like the one in the “For Dummies” series might be helpful since it is of digestible size and has romanji which you have some hope of fathoming during the short ride.

I will be taking a similar flight from Virginia to Osaka which is really freaking long, but my companion will be my savior. Unfortunately, I am in the nonplus econo section :-(

Another thing, I have recently read that fasting during flying reduces jet lag immensely.

  43. ramboass says:

filt with the person next to you and if u get lucky u earned a date in the bathroom with her!!!!!

if u got a guy next to u filt with the fly attendents and if u get lucky…

the worst go to the washroom and have a date with ur hands…

if the pilot is hot then go to it….

conclusion sex is the best on plane!!!!

  44. Suzy says:

I thought I’d add onto this even a few years late because reading through this I got some really good ideas and I figured I’d contribute. =P

I’m flying by myself (I’m fifteen) tomorrow and it’s going to be a prettyyy long flight. There’s normally not other people my age flying alone, and I like talking to people, so I do other things to entertain myself. (I’m secretly hoping I get sat next to some incredibly cute boy my age hehe but fat chance there.) I absolutely CAN’T sleep with strangers around me, that freaks me out. I am definitely bringing my iPod, music AND games AND video.

Besides music and spacing out, here’s what I plan to do. I’m going to buy a blank notebook (so inspiring!) and doodle. Except I like to take it to the next level. Fill every inch of the page with doodles, song lyrics, random babbling, logos, etc. It takes a few hours to finish one sheet, but it looks amazing when you do. Even if you’re not “artsy”, it’s fun, you’ll definitely get some compliments on it, and you’ll get better each time you do it. You might even find it’s a good way to express yourself. Other things to do if you don’t have any electronics and can’t sleep:

    • write a story about the people around you (giving them names and such)
    • put on a song and try to write out the lyrics as they’re sung (which is actually really hard but so entertaining)
    • eavesdrop on a conversation and write it down (even funner when the people you’re listening to notice! I was doing this once, just writing out what the person next to me was saying on the phone, and suddenly I found myself writing ‘And who is this girl writing down what I’m saying?’)
    • write out the lyrics to songs that you’ve memorized.
    • DEFINITELY try initiating a staring contest with someone sitting near you! Just start staring at them and try not to blink, and see if they catch on.
    • if you don’t have a portable DVD player, but the person next to you is watching a movie on one, just watch the people and dub the lines in your head.
    • write little notes and leave them in various places around the plane. They can say anything from “You’re a beautiful person” to a secret that you’ve been dying to tell someone and needed to release.
    • if you have a layover, or before you get on your flight, look around the airport stores. They usually have portable games/books/magazines that you can read.

I hope somebody read this and got some ideas of what to do on those boringgg flights. =)

    Thanks everyone!

  45. Hannah says:

Omggg….. This is so great hahaha.. I’m gonna have to print off these ideas and take them on the plane with me :P

  46. Rora says:

hi i am going to Finland in december with my nana and am staying there for 6 weeks!
it is a 17 hour flight from Australia.

If there is no half-good movies on (which there usually arnt)here are the stuff i bring on a plane to keep me occupied.

    -my nintendo ds
    -pillow
    -colouring in
    -ipod
    -textas,pens ect
-a good mag(i reccomend dolly if your a girl!)

and dont forget sometimes aproprite clothing will make your trip more comfterble like:
    sneakers,jeans(or log shorts)and a jumper.

normally i prepare a boardam book which contains wordsearchs, mazes, spot the differance ect.

so i hope i have given you enough, have fun when you are on the plane.

this is way too ironic… i went on google to search what kind of things i should do on my first time to japan!!! wow…. well what im going to do is grab a good novel/magazine and of course as u already said a sketch book, and then studying japanese is good…but you probly should do that before you leave if you decide to try doing that. its great to bring a labtop too so you wont get bored. Now days there is so much to do on the internet. and even when you get there you can even use the labtop to email people/send videos with a webcam and send photos and things like that so you can keep in contact with your friends in your hometown even with the +13 hour time change. I am also bringing over the counter sleep medicine to be able to sleep on the plane and adjust to the time change ( i reccomend Melatonin 5 mg ) it will have you sleeping peacfully within 30 minutes! Also you could bring a travel dvd/movie player. I even saw a person knitting on a plane…that is if you are in to that sort of thing. Just if you have any hobbies try to work them into somehow using them on the plane. I know i am definately going to download tons of movies unto my ipod before i leave. It is also great to bring snacks too :) !!! whats boring about eating? and trust me ur gunna be wanting a travel pillow of course! and i also strongly reccomend u bring an extra chang of clothes so you can freshen up once you get there or when you stop instead of waiting all the way untill u finally get to ur hotel or wherever ur staying… and try not to wear to much makeup cause its just going to smear all over your face after awhile. and try something like a james patterson book on the plane too! hope this helped! :D

  49. Tom says:

    _ Go in the bathroom,
    come out,
    point towards the bathroom
and yell at the top of your lungs
    “SPIDERRRRRRR!”

    _ Go into the aisle,
    Stretch and groan loudy,
    kick out your legs,
    wiggle your hands,
    and finally say “ahhh”
^Repeat the process every 20 minutes or so.

_ Ask the person next to you for some pads/tampons,
    and see their reaction.

_ If your in the aisle seat,
continously play with a bouncy ball(s),
let it bounce to the last aisle,
and holler to the person it rolled to,
“CAN I HAVE MY BALLS BACK?!”

_ Wait outside the bathroom when it’s occupied,
    stand against the door,
look official – like an agent [stiff as a board, stern face],
If anyone else is waiting out there too,
    say
“Some very important is in there”.

And it turns out to be some granny.
    hahahaaa…

    Enjoy the flight kiddies (:
