Things To Do On Long Plane Rides

Japan www2005 conference

I’M LOOKING FOR SUGGESTIONS as to what to do on a long airplane ride.

Tomorrow I fly to Japan’s Narita airport in Chiba City, where I’ll be attending and presenting at the WWW2005 conference. It’s my first trip ever to Japan!

It’s a long haul. I’ll not be in a business class seat (although Economy Plus is manageable) alas, but I will have my PowerBook, my iPod, my noise cancellation headphones, two novels, a sketchbook and a pen. I’m not certain as to whether those EP seats have power, if they do, that’ll be good, but if not, I have to be prepared.

As most readers know, I’m a pretty seasoned traveler, but long hauls can get really boring and I’m a crappy sleeper anywhere, much less amidst a crowd.

Any suggestions? Humorous or practical, have at it.

  1. Edward Says:

Read up on cultural differences so that you’re completely up to speed on how to win their hearts (and avoid social and professional embarrassment).

  2. Adrian Says:

I used to fly a hell of a lot and always thought that a large jigsaw puzzle would have been ideal if it wasn’t for the space considerations. somebody should miniaturize jigsaws so that you could do a 5000 piece puzzle on the tray table. It would be a boon for the magnifying glass and tweezer manufacturers!

  3. Kevin Says:

For me, it’s got to be magazines and short books. My first long haul, I tried bringing big meaty books, but I couldn’t concentrate on them long enough to get into it. Magazines and short books hit the need-to-occupy-but-not-get-bored happy medium. I suggest Utne, James Lee Burke, Mother Jones, The Week, The Nation, and Wired for traveling.

  4. Molly Says:

Edward: I’ve read the etiquette guides, and trust me, I’m totally going to step in social and professional embarassment. I’m loud, vulgar, gesticulate wildly, and am basically inappropriate by default.

Most people think it’s charming for some reason, but we’ll see how I do in Japan. I will really try to be on my best behavior.

Adrian: my eyes hurt just thinking about it.

Kevin! Hey there - yeah, good reading all. Utne and Wired are both on my shit list though. Utne published a really negative article on blogging last summer and I’ve yet to get over my snit, and according to Wired Magazine, there are no interesting women in technology. I’d hate to think either was correct.

I think I’ll go with Mother Jones, I’m not mad at Mother.

  5. ghola Says:

None of these are useful :

    - Try and beat Fritz 8 at maximum strength.
    - Count down from 1 000 000 000. Remember the number you reach by landing and try to beat your record on the next trip.
    - Seduce the pilot.
    - Have the whole EP Class sing school bus songs.

  6. Will Hayworth Says:

Write an open-source operating system that combines Unix, Linux, and Plan 9’s best features: Mollix!

More seriously, you might want to learn basic kanji. It might be useful while you’re over there.

  7. Molly Says:

    Argh!

Will: I’ve been staring at kanji for months now, and comprehension still remains elusive.

Ghola: I like pilots. Handsome people (usually men but not always) in front of complex technology? Oh yes, I like pilots, I do.

However, you all can’t gather in front of the cockpit, as we all know.

  8. Faruk Ates Says:

Sketch out possible designs for my site’s redesign, and upon returning, see if you were close ;)

Or more seriously, read up on Japanese culture. Very interesting and useful, esp. since this is your first visit and you’ll probably encounter some very big cultural differences you may have to get used to, in order to feel more comfortable there.

  9. tiffany Says:

playing cards? and force the person next to you to play a game of go fish. (or maybe mini checkers, chess or dominoes.)

  10. OldBoy Says:

    Youkoso Nippon e ..!
What else practice your Japanese conversations.. ;)

Anyways.. we are awaiting you in the land of rising sun… :)

  11. Molly Says:

SLEEP! well maybe not the whole time.. short books are good, too. :)

  12. Kristen Says:

I flew over to Japan solo a few years back and was dreading it because anything over about 7 hours leaves me getting claustrophobic in the plane. I got lucky and had a really interesting world traveller next to me and we spent the entire 9 hours talking, and I think we slept some. Suggestions I would make for this lengthy journey, outside of the usual get up and walk around are:

draw your favorite vacation using only pictograms and diagrams

memorize all the words to a couple of favorite poems

read 4 or 5 young adult fiction books (Harry Potter, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, etc) which don’t require a lot of thought but are amusing and enjoyable

    meditate

Best of luck on the trip!

  13. Louis Says:

Well, it might not be for the whole trip, but look out the window and to that beautiful view while you can!

  14. Jeff Says:

    Can’t believe nobody has said…

    DRINK!

  15. Keith Burgin Says:

    molly -

Go on the plane completely blotto. And continue to get plowed once onboard. Wear a t-shirt that says, “I’m with stupid.” Make sure you’re sitting in such a way that it points toward your seat mate.

Play chess by yourself and act completely pissed when you make a good move. Read a book upside down.

Scream out, “I’ve been looking forward to this trip for months, I just love Chinese food.”

I can provide you with an entire list you can take with you if you like.

  16. Amelie Says:

You can see cherry blossoms in Japan. It’s wonderful!

    Japan National Tourist Organization:
    http://www.jnto.go.jp/

    Have a really nice trip!

    Amelie

  17. Ian Gordon Says:

Have a gameboy? PSP? Play one of those for a couple of hours.

Other than that, there really isn’t much you can do, I know because when I am travelling for just 5 hours, I get really bored and soon I start to lose my mind because I have listened to all my songs like 2 times and the book I was reading, I can’t focus on (i can’t read while I am in a moving vehicle, weird) and you could just sleep and when you wake up, strech, get some food, use the bathroom…think for a few minutes and then go back to sleep.

Otherwise just sit in your seat and listen to music…no choice really (it’s what I do).

  18. Sharaf Says:

Buy a Mini DVD player and take bunch of good movies with you. I hate when they play some sort of old & outdated movies or something I have no interest in on the airline TV. Best is bring your own movies and play and pause.

Also, learn japanese on the way, might be handy…you never know.

    have a safe trip.

  19. molly Says:

im a fan of switching between trashy magazines, good novels, and something intelligent. If you want to impress the person next to you, pick up the scholorly book and place the magazine inside as there is no way you will want to think after more than 5 hrs of flying. I like to have at least four things to entertain me and switch when I get bored. Sleeping pills are great if you decide you hate the person next to you.

  20. Stan Maddox Says:

Bubble wrap. Lots and lots of bubble wrap. Pop them slowly… one… at… a… time.
Bring a kazoo. Memorize one British military march beforehand. Make sure it is the only song you play. Imitate the snare drum riffs and cymbal crashes, too.
Get one of those thick, bound pocket sketchbooks. Doodle your own Godzilla flip-book movie on the pages. Proudly show it off to the people in your section. Earnestly brag about your “cultural awareness”.
Wonder aloud if the Japanese are really into bathing and hygiene as much as they claim on PBS. Sprinkle in comments like “Well, they’ll just have to get used to me”.
    Two words: “Paddle Ball”.

These suggestions should guarantee you plenty of elbow room on the flight.

  21. christopher tiger woods Says:

on long plane rides i like to think about napoleon dynamite. I look at the person sitting next to me and say ¨lucky¨ every 10 minutes. My friend Megan likes to say ¨Lucky¨ also. We find it very satisfying. So if you want to, give it a try. Lucky you went to Japan, LUCKY!!!

  22. ake Says:

why not put on those noise cancellation headphones and relax without iPod, laptop, books etc. let your brain work without tools for a bit. have done that on occasion on tokyo flights and it’s amazing what you can come up with when you’re not blocked by the limits of such gadgets.

  23. bob Says:

hey im going to california relly soon i was thinking what i could do..this is what i came up with.. im bringin my portable dvd player .. and lots of movies.. ((napolian dynomite)) lol im bring my cell phone so i can play games on it .. my cd player magazines.. love to read those..drawing paper so i can draw the person next to me (( its goin to me ugly)) lol and probally a good book cus i live in pennsylvania n its a 5 hour fight to california n im goin by my self … so i hope you have a safe flight

  24. Shandy Says:

What im going to do when i leave for cali on thursday is bring my portable CD players with tons of CDs and magazines and then a shirt that says leave me alone i dont like stupid people

  25. André Says:

This tip is real late but whatever!

How about learning how to draw Manga? There are in the market some good books about it, and it’s really fun and addictive! Maybe on your arrival you can impress your Japanese friends with your interpretation of “molly bored in an airplane” comic book.

  26. alain Says:

Since you’ve already taken the flight, please remember these tips for next time:

    1. You can act as if you’ve never flown before and scream your lunch order into the overhead AC spouts, as if they were fast food drive-thru microphones.

    2. Bring along a Magic 8 Ball and start asking it inappropriate questions, such as “Is the man next to me wearing underpants?” Then be sure to read aloud the answer: “My sources say no!”

    3. Make sure you get a window seat, but insist on going to the WC every 30 minutes or so; increase frequency during meal times.

    Hope this helps!

  27. wolf Says:

be sure to bring a pen:
    Crossword puzzles
taking down the name/email address of the cute stewardesses on the plane ;)
    doodle
uh….and write poetry, to the stewardesses you just met ;)

  28. Chris G Says:

Its funny, Im going on a plane ride 4 15 hours on the 6th of june, a month after this was started. I myself didnt find much new about the topics listed above, except the dvd player, which I cant afford. I f you play an instrument, like I do, you’ll find they really pass the time by. So like a guitar, get a child version of it, and play it on the plane, not loud enough for everyone to hear, unless they wanted to listen. Then have fun and become the center of attention. I still ned some more advice though, so any other ideas, please email to me. Thanks.

  29. Rukhiya Says:

HEY well i have a couple of advice tips on wat you can do. i am also leavin on the 18th of june and i sure cant wait. there are lots of things you can do. first off you can jus sit down and relax. think about ur flight and how excited u might be about going to japan. u can then listen to music, eat, read a good book that u find interesting. lyk i will read something lyk problems that teens have because it gets me interested. well i will have a preetie long flight 12 hours =) well i am used too it though well wat ever u do make the best of it =)

  30. kelly Says:

    SLEEP! i heart sleep

  31. Ishani Says:

WELL>, just chat to the person next to you..and make the class sing songs..and sing ur songs out loud! lol ..omg this will b a long flight!

  32. Alice Says:

    play with bubble wrap

  33. ps Says:

put on a kiddie song on your cd player or iPod and sing along loudly

press the button that calls the stewerdess every 10 min.

    build a small 3-D puzzle

    color peoples faces in magazines

  34. ibossyourmom Says:

    bring a rubix cube

  35. ibossyourmom Says:

bring a porno dvd and watch it in your dvd player or bring a porno magazine

  36. Kierra Says:

I travel summer round to gigs out of country to play @. I’ve found that doing simple things like making bracelets or pulling out mini games to partner up with someone and play. Sleeping pills work great and a blow up pillow is also wise. I’d not advise to play instruments either! Those people who do are annoying to the majority. cds’ and dvds are also good if you’re full of mula. I’ve also found that writing songs and music comes easily on a long flight. whatever floats yur boat!

  37. David Says:

Kiera is an overly modest musician and don’t play an instrument on her flight!
It’s not smart. You’ll also look really stupid!!!!

  38. Woot Says:

This obviously doesnt apply to you since your gone, but I figure other people might find it useful. :)
I will be heading off to Japan this summer as well, and I have made a huuugee list of things to do on the plane…because I couldnt sleep on the last flight there, so I’m assuming it’ll be the same this time lol. A few things that I think are good to do areeee: work on a scrapbook, write a journal entry about what you think japan will be like, make a list/lists of what you will be doing there, organize things (pencil case, whatever…this is for when you get rreaalllyy bored), eat snacks, write a friend a letter telling them how you are excited or bored and give it to them when you get back/mail it to them (thats expensive though, of course)…and I could write so much more but those are the best i guess lol. Have a safe trip!

  39. Kim Says:

I’m about to fly for 28 hours from Australia. I have found Sudoku puzzles quite entertaining especially the new Sudoku cube which is sure to entertain for a few hours!
    www.sudoku.cc or www.sudoku.org.uk or www.sudoku.com.au

  40. nada Says:

Sleep, or pick up a conversation with a neighbor but be careful you may not be able to stop.

  41. Georgie Says:

    Molly-
I feel bad that you have to go on this long flight but I will be feeling the same thing because tomorrow I depart for Austrailia and encounted a flight for god only knows how long. I live in NY and fly to California frequently and there are certain things I may suggest:
    -ipods are great

-watch the scariest movies out; this will keep you definatly not scared
-I may suggest the grudge since you are going to Japan.

-Since I can basically tell you are not the type of girl who is intact with the celeberties and everything they do you could possibly get all of those type of magazines
-you can get a kick out of their self centered lives and how they “hate” the popurazzi yet while walking Rodeo drive they live for it

-I personally perfer laughing to studing!

Well, whatever you may choose to do on your long flight I hope for you to have a great trip!

  42. Zanderguard Says:

Sitting dressed in all black and staring coldly into space, complete with leather gloves and ankle lentgh trench coat I flew to texas last year like that and also to Cyprus. im in cyprus now ^.^ maybe i should try something new on the return trip home.

  43. Tiff Says:

Isugest watching the on flight tv (if there is one) but usally there is one.
I come from hong kong therefore I usally ride on cathay pasific. There is a tv and tons of onflight mags
    THINGS TO DO:
    1. read
    2. write
    3.sudoku puzzles
    4. crosswords
    5. word search

  44. Jenn Says:

Hiya! I’m going on a long 15 hr plane ride to amsterdam, then getting on another plane and flying to cyprus. I’m staying w/ my grandparents and i’m going by myself (I’m 15). I’ve goine on this trip before, but through Hethrow…after those bombs i’m so glad im not going through england anymore…anyway, i find that playing gameboys or trying to read gets emensely boring and makes me sick…generally long economy flights come w/ tv screens on the back of the seats…at least they did last time…so i leave on july 17 and im really hoping i can sleep or just annoy the poor person next to me for a laugh lol :P

  45. Jenn Says:

Ha my older brother Ryan just told me that if you are bored pretend to fall asleep and drool and snore all lover the person sitting next to you…hey it’s worth a try

  46. Mike Says:

I like to do crossword puzzles when im on a plane…the great thing is they have printable ones for any of your favorite subjects or best subjects. I personally print out sports crosswords which are nice. I just searched on google and got a bunch off. Pretty cool. Another fun thing to do is bring a recorder and turn it on during the flight or various moments before and listen to what was said by other people which can last a little while. Im goin to hawaii tomorrow and my psp and mp3 player are gonna be my best friends…along with Harry Potter!

  47. Racheh Says:

how about making those cute little bracelets? i think they’re called skoobies. they’re braided and there’s different types of braids you can do.
they’re not my kind of thing, and can get boring, but they’re quite easy to make and very addictive once you get started. i wouldnt wear them, but i gave them to my friends for presents. haha.
    whatever you do, have fun.

  48. ldawg Says:

hey im goin to california by myself in august and i do admit im a little bit scared and this is the longest trip i’ve ever taken by myself i have nooo clue what im going to do i’ve read all these and have done most of them before but have been equally bored…

  49. Doll Says:

Hey. I noticed that every ones ideas are all like the same— Reading books and magazines, sleeping/eating or annoying any one else on the plane in every way you can.
I’m going on a 15 hour trip to Italy tomorrow, but i WILL be with one of my friends so that will help a little bit i guess.
Other than what evey one has said,,,
things do do that are pretty cheap are like…..
-get a Rubic’s cube. I’ve NEVER done 1 succesfully, but i plan to eventually
-bring a stuffed animal on the plane and talk to it like its alive and have it answer you in ur ear and at random times glare at your neighbor and eventually tell them ‘my teddy bear thinks that u have serious issues’
-see how many pages you can fill with those annoying little hearts that all link together
-do something creative with things like glue paper string and garbage and make it REALLY ugly. when ur done tell whoevers sitting next to you that its the best thing youve ever made and ud like then to keep it
-talk to the grumpyest peron on the plane
    -make funny faces at n e 1
-pretend to talk on a phone-even if it’s fake and pretend your like breaking up with someone and start crying really loudly and then say were through! and hang up the phone crying
-see how many pens and pencils or pretzle sticks you can stack on top of each other
-go to the bathroom for a really long time and make really loud noises
*-wear something crazy like a giant boa and count the # of people who stare at you(i did this @ the mall once)*
—well, im getting board of thinking now, but theres so many other things to do. get creative or just annoying lol have fun n e ways

  50. Charlotte Says:

Take sum scoubi doos to do on the plane. You know those anoying pieces of plastic tht u plait. It will take up ur time and u cn do it while thinking bout other fings lyk ur trip or u can concentrate and it will take up loadsa time

  51. Carlyn Says:

If youre sat near the bathrooms watch people go in and when they come out take notes and make sure they see you.

But last time i was on a plane I did my homework and drew pictures.

Does anyone else find that they always sleep a lot lot more on the trip back?

  52. Bananas Says:

try drawing really cool things on paper, or write a letter 2 sum1 u hate telling them y and have fun cursing. do the sunny-d commercial thing where u poke sum1 until they turn around then u stop and pretend 2 do sumthing else, then when they turn around again, poke them again. make a list of all the different noises you can make. if the bathrooms are by the flight attendents, you wait there and finnaly theyll start talkin 2 u. when that happens, you can get free food. its sumthing 2 do. the lats time i did it, they let me deliver drinks. it was cool. get a make ur own project thing, such as sand art and do that in a plastic bag so it doesnt get all over everybody. sit in a funkey fasion. like sit in the seat backwards and put your feet up, but only when your in the air. make disgusting sounds. thats all i got

  53. Joolz Says:

i’m flying from pennsylvania to cali…

    i’m taking…
    -ipod
    -book i’m required to read
    -game boy
    -mini travel games

stuff i’m goin to bring after reading everyone elses replies
    -crosswords
… that is it! so don’t read them all they’re worthless except for the crossword idea on subjects

  54. Lee Says:

Well, i leve tomarrow for Paris and we stop through in london, i am quite scared of bombings, and terrorists but i am tolld we are save, i hope so, and i hope everyone else is to. On the plane i am plannin to listen to about 5 or 6 different cds and laugh at my dad ( i AM 12 ! ) I personally tend to take the asle seat and trip all the people walking by, but that get tiring, plz reply!

  55. Y_Would_I_Tell_U_My_Name? Says:

i’m off to korea tomorrow with my mom…i’m planning to read a lot of boring books that will hopefully put me to sleep…talk to my mom a bunch…chew gum discretely so she doesn’t see (i have braces)…eat…read all the teen magazines i got while i was @ camp for 2 months…sleep…plan what we’re going to do there…practice my hangul (learned last month)…sleep…drink a whole buch of soda…be sad that my music is on my comp and my mp3 player is being screwy…do a puzzle book…sleep…sleep…sleep…zzzzzzzzzzz

  56. paul Says:

I leave for Japan in 15 days. I can’t wait. I hav 2 fly from Sydney to Beijing 1st and we don’t get to da airport till 11:30pm. Then i have to fly out very early in the morning for Narita Airport. I’m gonna be so bored to. I suggest u bring Uno cards and play Uno with fellow friends or other passengers who look bored as well. This’ll b my 1st flight ever overseas so i’m getting excited. But the 10hr flight looks boring as well.

  57. phil Says:

    dudes…

u got nothin on me. i gotta go from sydney to london - total gate to gate time =24hours. imagine, a whole day on a plane. i was ok coming over here as i had loadsa music/mags/general shit. the only thing i got now is my CD player, about AU$25 and one of those really poor blow-up neck pillows.

i came here looking for good stuff to download or find out about… i’ll keep lookin

remember, you can only write your past, not your future.

  58. Saskia Says:

    Good ideas:
    -imitate formula 1 cars
-say to the person next to you ‘wake me up if i drool on your leg’
-make paper dollies out of a newspaper
-sing little kids songs, like ‘the wheels on the bus’
-yell out loudly when the plane goes quiet ‘GET YOUR HAND OFF MY THIGH!’

I have tried them all but the best one:
-play evey ringtone on your phone OR imitate the crazy frog (WINNER)

  59. Lee Says:

Heyy bak from vaca, 26 hours in a plzne, full plane, i was the only white ong :S o wel, im notracist, it was just weird. 4 kid were sik and i almost was frum the smell. Well, i listened to music and made fun of the lady to my left, and flirteed to the uy on my right… fun…!

  60. mel Says:

ask the flight attendants sepearately at different times how to open the window on the plane, then shout loudly after they say sorry you cant ” for f***s sake i just wanted some air ” then every cuple of mins say quietly out loud so the person nxt can just hear ” its ok your fine just count to 10, 1 ,2 ,3 etc. lol

  61. Kieran Says:

im goin to tenerife it isnt the longest flight but its still long im bringin an mp3 player magazines and im gonna stuff my face with food and drink

    or

you could for fun stand up an shout this is a stick up nobody move, scares the life out of every1

    or

when the attendant are showing you the safety procedures keep shouting wheres the parachutes, constantly shout this through the whole flight

  62. Dan mace Says:

the best thing to do is have a wank. maybe 2 or 3. or have a shag that normally takes up a bit of time. maybe use a vibrator

  63. sha sha Says:

where can we sleep on the plane but what if we just can’t sleep in the morning time we acn only sleep at night time but your really tired and you still can’t fall asleep the only way you can fall asleep is if you eat alot of fod and stuff your self you eat to much then you fall asleepwhat do you call that.

  64. ED Seward Says:

    draw a lot amsn read

  65. ED Seward Says:

    EAT

  66. ED Seward Says:

    go poop

  67. me Says:

Whats the point of carrying on this topic when hes already gone off to Japan(as he recalled, hes going “tommorow”.

  68. Cole Says:

I think that you should bring a portable D.V.D. player and about 12 DVD’s. The reason you should bring so many id because you are also going to have to fly back to the U.S. later. They will probably show a movie on the plane, though. Just sit and watch movies on the entire flight. I do not advise watching a full screen d.v.d., because they become way to blurry on a widescreen portable D.V.D. player.

  69. cooter Says:

because other people who have long flights are getting ideas from this :)

  70. Frank S Says:

    Molly, but what about sleeping?
    It is very useful.

  71. BlackJack Says:

Hmm…I know! This may get you in trouble if you’re caught, but it’s funny in context.

Bring a whole pack of gum, enough for 7-10 hours. While at the airport, begin chewing your gum. When you get to your seat and the flight attendants are gone, stuff the piece of gum you have into the trash compartment thing. Repeat this for the whole trip. It costs about $200 to replace those things. It may not be ethical, but it sure is funny.

Singing along loudly to music in your headphones is always good for a laugh.

Above all, don’t die of boredom. That would be BAD.

  72. Cameron Says:

Stare intently at people. When they see you out of the corner of their eye look away really fast and then when they stop looking do the same thing again until they say something! This is really fun and can usually last a few minutes :D

  73. chad Says:

turn the clicker on ur ipod on and scroll through ur songs by someones ear for 2 mins

  74. megan Says:

befor you leave buy a new cd put it on your ipod but dont listen to them intill you are on the plane

  75. Jules Says:

I am goign on a flight tmr and this i what i have plannd out:
1- MP3 player is a must have. loaded with favourite songs, it drowns out all the annoying background noises.
2- I bought a miniature origami book and stacked on paper
3- Big 600 word novel (fourth of a series so I know I will enjoy it)
4- A funny short stories book when I begin to lose focus easily
5- deck of cards (I can play solitaire or get the person next to me to play)
    6- Pens to doodle
7- Gum or candy is very good
My flight is only 4 hours but i have ben on longer flights before. It is always good to have at least a few things to do. In a plane you get bored surprisingly fast and the longer the flight, the more ADD you will become as the flight goes on(no offense).
Best of luck to all fuure travellers ;)

  76. Cheesus Says:

Ejaculate onto the face of the person next to you.

  77. al Says:

i think the best thing to do on a long flight if u dun have money to buy ipods and poratable dvd players is to get as much sleep as posible and watch all the movies that are showing. after that thers all the other ideas

  78. Time Says:

  88. Paul Says:

The ultimate thing to do on a plane…

If you have a PSP that is…

OK, take about 3 games, play each for an hour each (3 hours gone)

If you have a decent memory stick, put two movies on it (7 hours gone)

put 2 episodes of a series (preferably ones you have not seen before, the best thing to do is not to watch them then download them in this case) (9 hours gone)

Then you can add about 2 hours of music onto the psp (11 hours gone)

You have then wasted 11 hours just using the PSP…

  89. Brain Says:

The funnest thing you could probably do (I want to do this one day) … wear a bunny suit…the whole flight, and never take off the head/mask…you will scare children, and other passengers.

  110. Celia Says:

okay, im going on a 11 hour plane trip tomorrow. Heres some things im bringing-
    * IPOD or CD player!!! come on guys, ever heard of a plane trip without any music??
    * portable dvd player
    * scribble pad
    * pen
    * psp
    * two books
    * neck cushion
    * DVD’s
    * u and ur own imagination!!!

  111. Jess Says:

for my flight to seatle i plan on bringing hand held games, a book, my ipod, a coloring book (you can never be to old to color!) card games, laptop and movies to play on it. It should keep you busy for hours!

  112. sarah Says:

yeah…every suggestion’s been repeated a shitload of times. i’m 15 and flying by myself to thailand. boston to san francisco to narita, japan, to bangkok. 27 hours total. pray for me. im too young to die of boredom.
    o yeah. sudoku’s good.

  113. Jo Says:

These are some exciting, time-consuming things to do:

-in your head make fun of everyone sitting around you. write down the good ideas and share them with the person sitting next to you.
-invent a game and force others to play with you
-freestyle a rap about the plane, people, etc. and dont stop for 7 minutes.
-if theres a little kid behind you kicking your seat, kick him back. hard.
-if theres a baby crying cause of a soiled diaper, throw some of your own crap on the parent until they change the babies diaper.
-try to locate some airmarshals(usually 30 years old, casual/loose attire or jacket) and ask to see their guns.
-iPods are overrated, and listening to music gets boring. Take your iPod apart and try to figure out how it works. If you break it, send it to Apple with a note explaining that you left it on over night.
-during a crappy aiplane movie, laugh the entire time, and make people think your a crack head.
-talk to yourself outloud. Some good topics are masterbation, drugs, and little kids.
-if your a guy: flirt with the hot female flight attendents.
-If your a girl: flirt with the hot female flight attendants. make people think your lesbian.

this should keep you unbored for a little while. After that stuff gets boring, play some kid in bloody nuckles or something like that.

  114. Teresa Says:

I’m 12 years old and on july 11 i’m taking a flight to montreal which will be a kinda long flight, its gonna get very boring i have a feeling so here are some things to do and bring on the flight, hope it helps :)

-bring water, you will get really dehydrated, is a good idea to hav e one of them frozen so it doesn’t get warm.
-Bring your favorite magazine, i like Quizfest, J-14, m mag teen people, star etc
-Since they speak french there and french is my second language (english first) i’m going to bring my french books and a dictionary (i got them from the library)
-you should also bring some travel guide books for wherever your destination is, mine Montreal, great for shopping ;)
-some airlines require headphones to listen to the voices on the TV on the chair in front of you so why not bring your own, last time they charged me 1$ canadian for some cheap headphones that broke a while later.
-Look out the window ad if you see something really pretty take a picture
-bring a notepad a nd pen, draw, or add a journal entry
-bring snacks! exapmle-bits and bites, fishy crackers, chocolates, candy, etc
-BRING GUM! and have it handy for take off AND landing, my friend uses styrofome cups and puts them on her ears, she says it works but i never tryed it…
-bring a printable sudoku, a site to get them is: http://www.puzzlechoice.com/pc/Sudoku_Puzzlex.html
-sleep if you can or just do sothing at all
-bring a word search book, its seriously addicting
    -bring your ipod
-get up and stretch every 30-60 minutes so that ur blood doesn’t stop circulating in your legs

well thats all i can think of right now so hope it helps and have a good flight to wherever you’re going, bye!

  115. any will do Says:

Divide a piece of paper up into squares the size of a postage stamp.
Draw or write something different in each one.

    OR

Pass the paper round the plane, get each person to draw something different

  123. Topanga Says:

I will be traveling to Athens very shortly for a long vacation and I feel more than prepared entertainment-wise. I am bringing along the following:
    - Several comic books (what can I say, I’m a sucker for “Between Friends” and “Adam @home”)
    - Several magazines
    - Two novels
    - Wordsearch and Sudoku puzzle books
    - A crochet kit (a hobby that fortunately for me is portable)
    - An Ipod
    - Cards
    - Mini-travel boardgames (checkers, chess, etc.)

There is alway the feature film, of course. Eating can also be time consuming, and drinking, but that can dehydrate you. I’m bringing along a beadset, but I’m not sure if I would reccomend beading on the plane, especially with turbulence. I’ve been okay with it in the past but there is risk of making a mess. My younger brother is bringing along his gameboy of course, so any portable hobbies are always a good idea. Writing, scrapbooking and visual art are great examples. You can usually find puzzles and do-it-yourself kids at the dollar store. If you’re bringing along CDs, it’s great to purchase an new one and save it for the flight. The key is to take up as much time as possible doing what you’re doing, and deciding on whether or not you like the CD is more time consuming than hearing the same old songs over and over - it gets tiring. If you’re going to a place foreign to you, it’s a great idea to pick up a book on its new customs.

  124. Abbyie Says:

Well, I was hoping for some more unique ideas also

1] not everyone has an ipod
2] not everyone wants to get in trouble by being annoying [your ideas made me laff tho]

I don’t know if you guys have touchable bubbles in your countries, I plan on filling the plane slowly with them. Or just before meal times, waft the contents of your air sickness bag through the air vents - then see how many people retch. I know someone said it before but it’s fun to make up the names and personal histories of the people sitting near you, talk in a voice just loud enough for them to hear you and when they turn to glare at you ask them how accurate you were.

  141. roota Says:

Seriously, tried unfolding a twister mat at the front of the aisle? If you can get a game underway you will probably be the first, otherwise it is absolutely gauranteed to bring attention. I’m trying it on Sunday. Will keep you posted on results ;o)

Try to strike up a conversation with a hot babe b4 boarding - u know, walk around the boarding area and see what ladies maybe noticing u - and just start a conversation, if u click - maybe u can sit next to her for the flight - u have 2 be lucky and hope that someone is willing to swith seats so u can sit next to her…LOL (lots of luck)

    3. bring the portable DVD/MP3I-POD, etc.

I am going on a trip to London and I am super excited! Here are my best tips on how to kill the hours:
    * PS if you are planning to fly overnight I suggest staying up the night before your flight (but you might want to get a few hours of sleep) so that you can sleep very easily throughout your flight*

    - Bring lots of magazines and some books so that you can spend lots of time just reading. I suggest reading right before you go to sleep so that you get a very dreamy feeling.

    - Watch some of the movies they have on the TV and that will kill you about 3 hours.

    - Get up and stretch your poor legs by walking around the aisle, going to the bathroom and doing little excersizes.

    - Look out the window and describe the weather and what it looks like in great detail.

    - Try to draw the people around you like your seatmate, the flight attendent, the lady with the snack cart. etc.

    - Play little game like cards or mini checkers or chess on the table tray. Some One Player card games you can play are: Solitaire or Gaps.(my favorite)

    - Try to whistle your favorite song, and if you can’t then just sing it.

    - Bring a little ball so that at times you can just toss it up in the air and catch it.

    - Play with a gameboy or a DS. Bring some different games and switch them every half hour.

    - Bring a book of puzzles like Sudoku(my favorite) or crosswords.

    - If you are going to a country where they speak a different language brush up your skills and take a dictionary with you and learn some new words.

    - Listen to an ipod.

    - Bring a little notepad to scribble on or describe some people you see like what color hair they have etc. and put down a name you think they look like.

    - Daydream about the fun time you will have at your destination.

    - Play 20 Q’s with your seatmate.

    - Draw your own castle in detail.

    - See how many words you can think of starting with the letter A, then B, then C etc.

    - Do some homework if you have any.

    - Make up your own language and name it.

    - Breed different animals and imagine what they would look like or you could draw them eg. cheetah and monkey

    - Bring your own snacks because sometimes the airplane food isn’t all that.

    - Think of all the fruits you can possibly think of… done? now try the vegetables…

    - Draw all the animals you can think of

    - Try to see if you can announce all the states in alphatbetical order.

    - Draw your perfect sand castle.

    - Design your dream home.

    - Chat up a storm with the person next to you.

This is kind of a long list but i hope you enjoy it!
Have a safe and happy trip!

  147. Brittany Says:

I am going to France from Cali so its a pretty long flight. Here is my list of things i am going to do:
    1. Draw
    2. Eat
    3. Read
    4. Play Cards
    5. Play my DS
    6. Listen to music
    7. Watch a movie
    8. Paint my nails

  148. Lindsay Says:

Whoa i’ve never tried painting my nails on a plane! i kind of want to try it though!!

  149. Hallie Says:

you guys dont suggest any new ideas… although Rosalynn’s ideas were pretty good… and NEW

  150. Jillian Says:

Does anyone bring their laptop?…. i am kind of thinking about it

  151. Taylor Says:

WOW! Rosalynn your ideas are sooo great! i am definately trying them on my flight to Poland… thanks a bunch!

  152. Jessie Says:

Painting your nails? ha i am definately trying that one on my trip from Cali to Spain! Hope there’s not any turbulance!!

  153. Holly Says:

I think personally, some of these ideas are a tad ridiculous. I came onto this website to look for good ideas for my trip to London. My favourite has to be the thinking ones like the ones with fruits, and writing. Those you don’t do everyday so it’s nice to do them when you have lots of free time. Thank you Rosalynn for your exquisite and delightful ideas! I really enjoyed them and are planning to use them.
    Always,
    ~Holly~

  154. not tellin my name! Says:

i would just buy a REALLY big fat book that is really interesting to you and once you start getting board listen to music and sleep. it would probably work.

  155. buster Says:

be totally bored and check the time like every 20 mins until you get there

  156. Melissa McMoron Says:

One thing that might sound juvenile, but is fun is colouring. As adults you can find intricut pictures online or in books of beautiful detail that can be coloured. Its time comsuming and fun. Buy some nice quality smooth and silky pencil crayons and have a ball. You can waste a lot of time and make something pretty.

  157. Becca Says:

I’m going to america on a school trip but unlike normal trips we cant just have one straight 8 hour flight we have to drive to manchester get a plane to hamsterdam have a few hours wait till our next flight to boston then a long 4 hour drive to our hotel. I seriously can’t think of anything to do although i like the scoobi string idea…
On other catch the stupid damn teacher won’t let us take anything electrical please help me :S

  158. Nikki Says:

Bring a lot of little hand-held games… handman, 20q. is a great one, but also things like Trinominoes are great until the little tray is filled with the blocks. Mad-libs are fun, and the electronic ones take up less space. If you have a lap-top, definetly bring DVDs, and try writing. The BEST game (if you have something to throw the dice in) is Cinqo. It comes in a blue key chain container and is a lot of fun for a few people.

  159. frida Says:

ummmmm……wats with people and the idea of i-pods!!!! not every boddy has them and if your going to a dirrerent country they probibly will have different elictricity soccets! so you cant recharge them or the batterys might b different.

    IDEAS:
-Be happy that ur actully going on a plane or over seas.
-when ur taking off look below u and try and spot buildings or things u no,or were u live, big trafic jams.
    -imagen people in funny clothes.
-if ur over the sea look 4 big ships
-try and eatch all the movies on the screen infront of u.
-if ur going to get a dog/puppie think of names 4 it.
-look 4 funny looking people and make up their past life.
-make up a cross mord puzzle 4 the person beside you to do.
-Think how the airline can immprove.

Thats all my new ideas, have fun and stay young.

  160. emily Says:

    this is so dumb!

  161. alex Says:

think of more things please & everybody has an ipod * i hope!~

  162. borat Says:

~ Crossword puzzle/soduko/books- i have a hard time concentrating on these things

~ Make a list of all the things you want to do on the weekends or summer. ex. a lemonade stand that donates money to a cool cause or goals for yourself

    I hope these help!!!

  167. frida Says:

now i have a mp3 player i can listen to that on the plane because some planes dont have very good music.

  168. frida Says:

-try and think of what people you know are doing
-see how many new friends you can make on a long flight.
-see how much you can drink, and then go to the toilet. That should take up a bit of time.
    -make up a song
    -draw what you see.
    -design your dream house.

Thats all i can think of right now, bye!!!

  169. frida Says:

-see how manny times you can watch the same movie in the flight. I watched Beauity and the Beast 7 times on a 11 hour flight ,there were no other childrens movies.

  170. harrypotter Says:

    Little late, but:

    Wear an upside-down visor
Ask personal questions to the person next to you, like “when was the last time you showered?” and “What color is your underwear?”
    Wear a skimpy bikini
Bring a vibrator and ask the person next to you to help you with it.

  171. harrypotter Says:

    oh yeah:
ask person next to you if they were married and if they wanted to fork.
    seduce pilot
    etc.

  172. frida Says:

i think those last ideas are very immature!
any one who would actully do that is realy weard.

  173. Chii Says:

Some of these ideas are interesting, but alot are repeated. Oh well.
    here are some of mine…
-Bring a ball, peg it at people, and when they turn around and glare, do something else.
-Try origami, I prefer making paper shurikans and throwing them at people, do you think they would count that as a weapon??
-Cd, laptop, the electrical stuff…you know
-Bring any homework, mabe draw for a little
-Write a fanfic about characters from your favorite TV show, then poast it on www.fanfiction.net and see what people think
-If you decide that the person next to you is boring, take some sleeping pills, works great if you want to kill a couple hours
    -Read this list twice,
    ~Thats all I got

  174. popo Says:

    here are some random ideas:
1 start counting your hair… it can make you go to sleep
2 get knocked down unconcious and tell a doctor to wake you up when you arrive
3 run up and down the aisle until the captain throws you out of the plane
4 go around and aske people for their names and numbers… and memorise them
5 recite the 253 times table

    have fun!

  175. thisisshe Says:

I am going out of the country in 3 days!!! 30 hour trip. I read this WHOLE ENTIRE THING, and i have an idea of what to do, so the only thing i can really think of is:

1 Listen to your Mp3 player/ipod, or if you dont have one, go and get a cheap one, it will sooo help.
2 make funny faces at the little children next to you.
    3 be bored
4 Read books, duh. Like maybe short ones, or maybe short comics, like archie.
    5 drink, look out window
    6 be really bored
    7 sleep
8 play solitaire, or play speed with your mom or girlfriend, or boyfriend, or whatever
    9 be super dupero bored
10 Be so bored that you fall on the floor, and be in fetal position, and scream, “I AM SOOO BORED

  176. Dallas English Says:

hmm, well this comment is two years late, lol. but im going to have to endure a 22 hour flight in a week, which really really sucks…im planning on watching some movies on the lap top, reading and trying to sleep…contemplating popping about 3 sleeping pills right before i bored the plane. well i hope your trip 2 years ago was good.

  192. John Says:

    Hay,
I’m traveling to australia TODAY! I’m having 22 1/2 hours (in the air only) there and 26 hours back. That’s all without connections! I just came to this page to find something useful, nothing really but the usual and i agree with those. Most common things (stuff that i’m bringing) are:

Empty Waterbottle: In the begging of the flight, get your waterbottle and close it tightly, in the middle of the flight, get your waterbottle and notice that’s it’s really cool! It’s all cause of pressure!

Deck of cards: To shuffle for hours

2 Books: To read and shuffle the pages together

THAT’s IT! Entertaiment enough, oh and SLEEPING PILLS!

    Hope this helped!

  193. what the hey Says:

wazup y’all, how is y’all doin’ cuz. peace.

  194. silly silly girl Says:

    heya people
been reading all these things as yes yes we realise that sudoku, books, magazines, cards, sleeping pills and ipods are all essentials so STOP with them!!! we get it!!
im going to florida from uk and im all set with some of these ideas. i rlly liked the one about trying not to think about penguins - i tried it just there (u know, for practise) and its fab!
if ur in to musicals take the entire les miserables on cd and play from start to finish, listening to every single word.
have a bottle of frozen diluting juice reading and drink it bit by bit.

    thats it.
i have now successfully wasted two whole hours in which i was supposed to be studying for some very important exams so congrats everyone for using up my time - and lets hope all the tips were worth it!
and also, to all those people who made remarks about pissing off people oon the plane - what the HELL is the point??? it may be funny, but not wen u get chucked off the plane at a changeover!!
    hav a good holiday people,
    x~Lynz~x

  195. MJ Says:

Hey, why is everyone going from philly to cali? i personally dont think california is that interesting…maybe cuz i live here…idk. NE way, im 14, and i love to do mad libs with ppl…they can get really interesting when you’re really bored. also, you know when they play the same freaking movie over and over again? if ur with ppl you know, you can watch the movie like a billion times and make fun of everyone in the movie…really fun…trust me.

  196. amani Says:

i travel to germany aloot, every year
so on th elong plane trips…its 6 hours…so on the first hour , i just sit back and relax, listen to music…then i lok at the tv guide to know when will they show a movie, they usually show it on the third hour, so i eat and listen to music …untill the movie starts, then i watch it and sleep…sometimes if i cant sleep, i just listen to music or read a book or entertain myself by maybe playing a PSP game or something alike…

  197. whoot Says:

im going on a 8 hour plane trip and i have no idea how my tiny attention span will keep me from dying of boredom so anyone with advice i would really appreciate it. =]

  198. shu! Says:

I just read through this whole thing. Even though the main point of this was for one person who was going to Japan two years ago..it’s helped other people.
Anyway, I’m going to Canada in 15 days, and as I said, I read through this whole thing and now I’m sure I won’t be bored on the plane! But, I think I should give you some more ideas! I’ll only say some things that no one else has said yet..You can:
-Make a list of things you want to buy wherever you’re going.
-Write a story, book, song, letter, life story.
    -Write a rea
