Things To Do On Long Plane Rides

Japan www2005 conference

I’M LOOKING FOR SUGGESTIONS as to what to do on a long airplane ride.

Tomorrow I fly to Japan’s Narita airport in Chiba City, where I’ll be attending and presenting at the WWW2005 conference. It’s my first trip ever to Japan!

It’s a long haul. I’ll not be in a business class seat (although Economy Plus is manageable) alas, but I will have my PowerBook, my iPod, my noise cancellation headphones, two novels, a sketchbook and a pen. I’m not certain as to whether those EP seats have power, if they do, that’ll be good, but if not, I have to be prepared.

As most readers know, I’m a pretty seasoned traveler, but long hauls can get really boring and I’m a crappy sleeper anywhere, much less amidst a crowd.

Any suggestions? Humorous or practical, have at it.

    Ok, these r some thingzz

~ Tap, or blow on the persom next to you, and when they look at you act like you are asleep…

    ~ Write a journal on how bored u are…

~ Try to listen in on other people’s conversations… and when they say some gossip, look at them and say “OMIGOD!! NOWAY!!”

    ~ bring a playboy/girl

~ Look at the catalog, and on every page try to find 1 thing that you would want out of everything, and once that is done, do wat person u would want to be. Takes up some time..

~ Watch the in-flight movie whether its good or not, it still takes up time… that is the main goal!!

    ~ daydream

~ write a poem that every line rhymes, and tells a logical story…work the brain!!

~ make up some math problems with random numbers, before the plane ride, and do them on the plane, but make a lot (Ex. 578×4984)

~ think about something funny, and try not to laugh.

~ remember all of the things you and your friends did before you left…

    all i can think of! (:-) :P :D :) Haha

hi I know I have put something in already but i just wanted to say something about eating on the plane.
Well I have discoverd that when you eat on the plane
you always get an aspecialy bad after taste!

so I would recomend not bringing tictacs, chips,m&ms,
gummy bares or any kind of lollies or salty things!
but if you want to bring a mintie kind of thing,
then i would bring mintos or how ever you spell it!
    because they m a k e a d i f f e r a n c e!!
but if you want to be compleatly safe about not getting a bad after taste bring your tooth brush i know i will be bringing mine for my 17 hour flight to finland!

for more tips visite my website soon to be invented
and i will put it on google. he he

    Aurora!

    Wow, this thread lasted long.

So I’m going to Lebanon on the 12th (Pit stops are Montreal and France).

    Here’s a list I made:

    1) Talk aggressively in Arabic and let words slip out like, “ka-boom!”
    2) Do the ‘Disco’ and make sure you’re poking the guy next to you.
    3) Bring Hannah Montana songs on your MP3 and sing along out loud (works best if you’re a grown man).
    4) Sneak into the cockpit, turn on the intercom, and ask the pilot out loud what ‘E’ stands for.
    5) Wear a disco outfit (star-shaped glasses, a fake afro wig, sparkling shirt and pants and sparkling, high-heeled shoes).
    6) Do the Hustle in the aisle.
    7) When the stewardess is asking you what you want to eat, pretend like you can’t hear her and keep doing the robot.
    8) Yell the ending to the Harry Potter books.
    9) Do the riff to “Crazy Train” on the kazoo.
    10) Bring a laptop, tap randomly on the keyboard, and when the stewardess asks you what you want to eat, say, “Just give me one second, I’m hacking the mainframe”.
    11) Act gangster, say things to the guy next to you like, “Sup, dawg”, and wear a bandana and put on temporary stickers.
    12) Be in the bathroom for a really long time and yell things like, “Oh my God! This is just like giving birth!”
    13) Ask if they could give you a couple of shots of Orange Juice.
    14) Don’t flush.
    15) Ring the stewardess button frequently and always ask this question:
    “Are we there yet?”
    16) Ask constantly where the gift shop is.

Have fun on your trip to Japan! (Which was over 3 years ago)…

Here is a copy of the ‘Things to do on the plane when you get bored’ section of my plane letter to my sister who is travelling tomorow:

    • Poke a sleeping person next to you and if/when they wake up act as if nothing happened. when they turn back around , poke them again.
    • When the attendant are showing you the safety procedures keep shouting ‘Where’s the parachutes’, constantly shout this through the whole flight.
    • Make sure you get a window seat, but insist on going to the WC every 30 minutes or so; increase frequency during meal times.
    • Take the free headphones and put them in your bag, then complain that you never got any
    • Colour people’s faces in the magazines and doodle all over the aeroplanes in-flight magazine
    • Press the button that calls the flight attendants every 10 minutes and ask ‘Are we there yet?’.
    • If you’re sat near the bathrooms watch people go in and when they come out take notes and make sure they see you.
    • Act as if you’ve never flown before and scream your lunch order into the overhead AC spouts, as if they were fast food drive-thru microphones.
    • Take someones Magic 8 Ball (if anyone has one, of use that 20 questions thingy) and start asking it inappropriate questions, such as “Is the man next to me wearing underpants?” Then be sure to read aloud the answer: “My sources say no!”
    • Make paper dollies out of a newspaper.
    • If one of your mates says they are bored, show them this list and do the things on it together.
    • Yell out loudly when the plane goes quiet ‘GET YOUR HAND OFF MY THIGH!’
    • Draw the people around you or make short comic strips and then show me when you get back.
    • Try not to think about penguins. It’s very hard.
    • Look for funny looking people and make up their past life.
    • Invent Eyeshadow Application techniques
    • Ask random people for their autograph.
    • Go to the loo, come back out, point towards the loos and then shout at thetop of your lungs ‘SPIDEEEEEEEEEEEERRRR’.

    Nix xx

p.s. most of the ideas are from this blog thingy

  5. Nix xxx says:

or print off a copy of this blog thing and read it on the plane.. It will keep you going FOR HOURS.

  6. I wish some of the people on here would grow up.

No one here is going to tap someone, then turn away as if they didn’t do anything so grow up.

This thread is things to do on a plane:

    Magazines
    Dvd’s
    Onflight Movies
    Draw
    Cards
    Ipod
    Eat
    Drink

All the normal things. Things are limited on a plane, so if you can get to sleep do it. If you cant, the best thing to do if just get comfy(take a pillow). Listen to some Jazz music, yes jazz, saxaphone etc, just relax.

  19. me says:

Hey my cousins and i are going to arizona and we have had the problem previously with them having to go “potty” but the bathroom being crowded or smelling or something like that. I sugest, if its a long flight with children under 10 years old, put them all in dipers or pull ups that way they don’t have to worry about accidents. The only problem will be changing them, youll just have to convince them that nobody cares about what they look like they just don’t like the smell. OR you could always only change them when they are poopy or so wet that your starting to see it leak on to their pants, alot less changing to do i guess. Anyway last time the eight year old ended up pooping all over her self cuz she was to scared to get up and then she was very smelly and hated getting up even more cuz she was embarrased. Pull ups are amazing!!

  20. alison says:

wow me is right! i used pull ups on a car ride and the kids hated the fact that they couldn’t go in the potty but the eight year old almost enjoyed being a baby again. she decided to use pull ups the whole trip cuz she didn’t wanna accidentily pee her pants and everyone notice, the best thing was she could change herself when she wanted too. now she even wheres them to school but will only pee in them there. she hates missing out on things to go potty. of course now shes almost ten but ive been doing it for a few years and really there much better than having wet car seats or wet pants.

  21. harper says:

would it be crazy for an adult to do that too?

  22. Violet says:

•Check off what you’ve done on this list
    •Watch in-flight movie
•Telepathy with someone-see if they can guess what your thinking
•Make a list of all the gift you are getting for everyone
•Play your DS/psp/gameboy if you have one
•Get up and stretch every 30-60 min
    •Listen to your iPod/MP3
•Repeat a word over and over until it loses meaning
•Check on your Tamagotchi if you have one
•Scavenger hunt with your neihbor- try to find people wearing things, sleeping people, electronics, hair sytles, ect.
•Mini Puzzle- do this on your food try
•Blink Wildly, then your close eyes for an amusing lightshow
    •Write in a travel journal-
    What you’ve done so far,
what you think (place your visiting) will be like,
Your country VS the country your visitings culture,
    write a short pointless story,
list of things to do before you die,
Think of nicknames for your pet, spouse, bf/gf, friend, sibling, parent,
Pick someone on the plane to write about and make up a story for them (include picture with labels),
Think of ways the airline could improve,
    draw place your visiting,
Plan a huge party (food, color theme, guests)(this dosn’t need to be real), Draw well known buildings (white house),
    Design houses,
    Make a comic strip,
    Doodle
•Take pictures(window, and inside of plane) or clear unwanted pictures from you camera
    •Look out window
    •Read book
    •Games on flight- personal screen
•20 Questions w/ neihbor or anyone – person, place, thing, idea, animal
    •Concentration game – Topic- airplanes/flying/airports/place your visiting
    •Tell list of jokes
•Eavesdrop on a conversation if they speak your language
    •Create a quiz
•Try not to think about penguins. It’s REALLY hard. Try focusing on something to not think of them
    •Play iSpy (use riddles too!)
    •Homework- If you have any)
•Ask the person your traveling with what you will do once you get there, and everything after
•Play spy- neihbor or friend picks a villain and then I try to guess who it is with clues. The less clues the better. Try to make a record. The is really villain a terrorist but call him Fred, not terrorist or else you will be escorted off the plane, as well as Fred. 3000 ft escorts are not very fun…
•inter-breed animals- ex. Cheetah & monkey- name it too ex. Chunky! Draw this, or use your imagination.
•Clean up before and after you sleep (brush teeth, wipe face w/ wetwipes, use bathroom, ect.)
•Sleep- Teddy, blanket, earplugs, sleeping pill, eyemask
    •Eat- food of course
•Drink water- not soda or alcohal, you should stay hydrated.
    •Bathroom- take only yourself!
    •Stare out window
•Do nothing for a minute (use watch to time)

  23. Violet says:

    One more
*Have a conversation with the person next to you. They can be very interesting and will keep you busy. Why not tell them your life story!

  29. jake says:

What me and my brother did once on the way to san francisco is get the litle paper cups out of the toilet and then go back to our seats open up our food tray things and they see who could make the biggest pyramids of paper cups :) its suprisingly addictive lol ( and im 13 ).

  30. jake says:

Listen to your ipod on shuffle all the songs and put the ones you dont like in a playlist?

  31. Allie says:

everytime the person next to you gets up, say, targat on the move! just loud enough for them to hear (also works on elevators)

  32. broweyedgirl says:

Some of these are funny but not useful. I’m going to Ireland and brussels in about 3 weeks and this is what I’m bringing:
    neckpillow
    ipod
    long lasting gum
    nancy drew books
And these tiny colored Teddy bears that you can get at AC Moore for 25 cents each. They are perfect for acting out scenes and plays. I hope this might help some people!

  33. Fergielover1 says:

Get teddy bears at the Dollar tree and buy some clothes for them at the Dollar tree also and pretend they are your child or make them your new friends and talk them like they are real. Don’t forgot to play with them!

  34. JBluva says:

i need help cuz im going to europe im gonna be bored out of my head

  35. Holly says:

Bring along some yarn and make awesome friendship bracelets. This can take up lots of time and you can give them to the person you are visiting. Bring the game catch phrase along and see if anyone wants to play with you. Pretend you are a reporter and watch what people do very closely. Write down stuff with extra imagination added.

  36. Sev says:

Wow! I love all these ideas! I know this question “What to do on a plane” was asked 2/3 years ago, but I looked up “activities to do on plane” because I’m going to Texas State and even though its not an extremely long flight (5 hours), its extremely long to me. I’m very restless and its even hard to sit down for a movie, so all these ideas were very helpful. It doesn’t matter if the person asked the question long ago, everyone wants to know the same question! This is a very good post. I think what I’ll do is:

    Magazine
Talk to person next to me
    Look out window
Make up story of a random stranger on plane
Make up characters of the different people on planes
TRY to go to sleep/close my eyes/relax
    Try to watch in-flight movie

  37. Daisy says:

    Rubiks cube
