Put the Lime in the Coke, You Nut
Long time readers know I’m fascinated by TV commercials. I dislike them as a concept just as much as the next person, but I do appreciate well-made or unusual approaches.
I also really like the fact that companies very often put their commercials on their Web sites. Here are some of my recent faves:
- The new Lime Coca Cola commercial. The commercial is not what I’d call brilliant, but it is witty. I don’t drink soda too much, but I actually liked Lime Coke when I tried it a few weeks ago.
- Of course, the Geico commercials are well-known and have won awards. My particular favorite is “Sunglasses” which you can check out from this page on the Geico site.
- HP Digital Photography (Windows Media), also an award-winning series of commercials, is really my favorite of the bunch. If you haven’t seen it, be sure to take a look.
What have you got?

The avarage quality of Dutch commercials has been rising over the years. You can check them out on the Ster.nl homepage.

There was an advert for a Japanese make of car (Toyota or Honda I think). It had a series of events that happened in a chain reaction.
It took 6 months to make and was even given away on DVD. I do have a copy somewhere.

I’m the same — I love clever advertising. Although clever advertising isn’t always clever for sales… but I digress.
In South Africa people need to be convinced a lot more to buy things (because money is more valued than say in the UK or US) so there are a lot of clever ads. Unfortunately I can’t find any links right now, but I’ll try explain some to you next time I see you (handwaving is required).
My favourite ad at the moment in the UK is the Citroen dancing car ad:
http://www.citroen.co.uk/c4/homepage.asp?pagetype=c4
(there’s a link to See The TV Ad in the bottom left hand corner)
I also love the Honda Power of Dreams ads:
http://www.visit4info.com/Restricted.cfm?id=10724&Redirect=www.visit4info.com/details.cfm?adid=10724
(can’t find somewhere where it’s free, but you may recognize it just from the screenshot shown here)

Right, the Honda one is the one I meant too!

Molly, is the “Your Comment is Awaiting Moderation” something you’ve done yourself or a default part of Wordpress?

That Honda ad is great! Kinda spoils the message (Isn’t it great when everything just works?) though, when you find out it took something like 216 takes.
And that HP ad has some great effects. I like the Kodak Gallery one too. (kid: “What’s it called?” guy: “We call it Kodak.”)

I randomly go to a websie with a website with my name as the url and… someone likes the same commercials as me. I dunno what you are talking about with the Geico one, but I love love love the “put the lime in the coke you nut” and the “picture book, pictures of your mama, taken by your papa…”.
Well, have a good day.
And P.S. I love wordpress, but hate the stupid random comments.

My two favorites are the cat herding commercial for eds.com (The whole collection is amazing and can be found here. It’s called “Trilogy”) and outpost.com releasing the “pack of ravenous wolves” on the marching band.

It’s an old commercial, but I think one of my favorites was an ad that Snickers ran during the 2000 election season… http://www.zfever.net/movies/snickers.mov

Microsoft has launched a new web marketing campaign for a new software offering. Who knows about the software, but the web “commercials” are hysterical:

I have been going to restaurants for years and ordering lime in my coke. Now coke finally brought out the product and it tastes really great and does not bring the carbonation of the beverage down like the vanilla coke (what were they thinking with that one)
I am a long time coke drinker and I love love love the commercial hope they win an award for it.

My all time favourite has to be this singing in the rain re-wroking for the Volkswagen Golf GTi. This online version doesn’t so it justice. You should see it on a cinema screen. Very impressive.

OK, this is the best commercial I’ve ever seen. You just plain have to respect nutri grain for producing such an amazing piece of advertising. It should make you want to have 500 babies with the closest person you can find.

I love the Budweiser commercials with the lizards raggin’ on Miller’s commercial creators. Haven’t been able to find it anywhere, though, and only heard the set on one radio station for about a month.

Lime in the Coconut by Harry Nilsson
Brother bought a coconut, he bought it for a dime
His sister had another one, she paid it for a lime.
She put the lime in the coconut, she drank them both up
She put the lime in the coconut, she drank them both up
She put the lime in the coconut, she drank them both up
She put the lime in the coconut, she called the doctor, woke him up,
And said, “Doctor, ain’t there nothin’ I can take,
I say, Doctor, to relieve this belly ache?
I say, Doctor, ain’t there nothin’ I can take,
I say, Doctor, to relieve this belly ache?”
“Now let me get this straight “,
Put the lime in the coconut, you drank them both up
Put the lime in the coconut, you drank them both up
Put the lime in the coconut, you drank them both up
Put the lime in the coconut, you called your doctor, woke him up,
And say, ‘Doctor, ain’t there nothing I can take,
I say, Doctor, to relieve this belly ache?
I say, Doctor, doctor, ain’t there nothin’ I can take,
I say, Doctor, dooooctor, to relieve this belly ache?’
Put the lime in the coconut, drink them both together,
Put the lime in the coconut, then you feel better,
Put the lime in the coconut, drink them both up,
Put the lime in the coconut, and call me in the morning
Wouh wouh wouh wouh wouh ….
Brother bought a coconut, he bought it for a dime
His sister had another one, she paid it for a lime.
She put the lime in the coconut, she drank them both up,
She put the lime in the coconut, she called the doctor, woke him up,
Say “Doctor, ain’t there nothin’ I can take,
I say, Doctor, to relieve this belly ache?
I say, Doctor, ain’t there nothin’ I can take,
I say Doctor! let me get this straight”.
You put the lime in the coconut, drink them both up,
You put the lime in the coconut, drink them both up,
You put the lime in the coconut, drink them both up,
Put the lime in the coconut, you such a silly woman!,
Put the lime in the coconut, drink them both together,
Put the lime in the coconut, then you feel better.
Put the lime in the coconut, drink them both down
Put the lime in the coconut, and call me in the morning
Woo Woo, ain’t there nothin’ you can take, I say
Woo Woo, to relieve my belly ache,
You say woo woo ain’t there nothin’ I can take, I say
Woo woo, to relieve your belly ache,
You say yah yah, ain’t there nothin’ I can take, I say
Waah waah, to relieve this belly ache,
I say doctor!, ain’t there nothin’ I can take,
I say doctor!, ain’t there nothin’ I can take,
I say doctor!, ain’t there nothin’ I can take,
I say Doctor!, you such a silly woman!,
Put the lime in the coconut, drink them both together,
Put the lime in the coconut, then you feel better,
Put the lime in the coconut, drink them both up,
Put the lime in the coconut, and call me in the moooooorning,
Yes, you call me in the morning,
If you call me in the morning, then I’ll tell ya what to do X5
