G’bye Dreyfus

I ALWAYS HATE IT WHEN PETS DIE, but it’s worse when it happens in cruel and unecessary ways.

Dreyfus was one cool cat. He originally came to our family via my brother Linus, and then went to live with our friend and extended family member Eric when Linus left Tucson for California. I have some beautiful pics of “Fus!” as I called him, but alas I’m traveling and don’t have them with so I can’t share one in this post.

Fus was one of those “steal the show” cats. I’ll never forget some years ago at a New Year’s Eve party at my brother’s house when he came jaunting into the kitchen (the main hub of any good party) and began to introduce himself around. You could almost hear him, Frank Sinatra-like “How ya doin, nice to meet ya, good to see ya” making his way around to everyone before sauntering out the back door.

Because I’m traveling I haven’t gotten the full details of what happened, only a phone call and email from my brother letting me know Dreyfus had been mutilated to death on Wednesday. It’s possible it was done by a wild animal – death by coyote is sadly a common end to cats out in the desert, but this doesn’t happen normally in more densely populated areas such as where Eric lives.

The far uglier thought is that it was done by a human.

I was unable to be in Tucson for his burial, but it’s good to know that he was very much loved in his life by an extended family who cared for him well and enjoyed his presence on this planet for each of his days. And if that cat was indeed hurt by a person, I am confident that the Powers That Be loved Dreyfus as much as the rest of us and will deal out a swift and harsh Karmic retribution.

Rest in peace, Fus. You were a great friend.

Molly, I’m so sorry. I don’t have much experience with death, and I never know what to say. I think my beautiful, sweet golden retriever will live forever, that is, after his career as an airline pilot. So MacDuff and I send our warmest condolences. And people who hurt animals are biting the karmic weenie – eventually, you WILL get served.

I am very sorry for the way Fus passed away. Cats have a very un-fair tendency to die in cruel ways.

I too believe in Karma, and I believe if it was caused by a human or any animal by cruel intent (versus survival i suppose) then they are already suffering, though they may not understand it.

I like to think cats are one of those rare beings who are actually aware of their own soul and the souls around them (if we can use the word “soul”). They always seem to be thoroughly connected to everyone around them.

You’ll see Fus around, I assure you of it. I see the past cats and dogs of my life in all of the life around me, in other cats and dogs, and also in trees and flowers. We’re all one.

Peace to Fus, and as well to Molly and her family.

  3. Sorry to hear Molly, I would have a cow if something happened to my kitty Juliet, or my big-sweetie! Sadie.

I have had to suffer through human cruelty to my animals before, so I hope that is not the case… it can be very difficult to work through.

Looking forward to having you back in the blogosphere when you return.

    Molly –

So sorry about Fus. You may never know by what means Fus died. But you know how he lived – and that’s the important thing. I think sometimes we focus on how a person dies – which, in the grand scheme of things, is only important to us, the “left behind”.

From what you expressed, Fus lived a good life, and is on to the next. I would be interested in what he’s doing now.

Sorry for your loss. It always hurts to lose a friend; their species is secondary.

    I’m so sorry. But… don’t be sad. A cat has 7 lifes!

I’m so sorry Molly. Pets are usually the most trusted friends we have.

    Molly–
I’m so sorry. I know how you feel, the same thing happened to me. Animals are great friends, especially cats, and it hurts to lose them. But it sounds like Fus was loved by those around him for all his days and led a happy life thanks to his family and firends. sorry again,

I had a cat that lived for 21 years. Very old cat.. he was great.. name was pib. My mother got him at a pet hospital.. the name pib was given to him by the person she got him from. Means “pain in the butt” lol! He was very sweet. I do miss him very much..
