Music Me

MUSIC ME. Here I am back at home, sorry about the over-exposure.
See my cute old iMac in the background? Still serves me while testing OS 9 stuff.
I’m looking for great new music mixes for my next adventures.
What have you got music-wise?
Please share and thank you always . . .

Vive La Fete – “Nuit Blanche”. My current favourite
Lately, Hem, oft described as “countrypolitan”, I guess to indicate a cosmopolitan or metropolitan accessibility to old-style country music. I personally recommend Eveningland over Rabbit Songs, even though the lyrics are better on the latter, purely because Eveningland is better-produced and doesn’t let the instruments run over Sally Ellyson’s lovely voice.
Currently unable to stop listening to “Sammy Davis Jr & Buddy Rich – Sounds of ‘66″. Great live recording from The Sands in Las Vegas at 5am (Sammy announces it as such).
Awesome!
Here’s a shameless plug. You can download some songs from my band, Salter Cane.
I think they’re pretty good but then again, I would, wouldn’t I?
Currently in heavy iTunes rotation, I’ve got Jesse Sykes And The Sweet Hereafter, Hazeldine and Giant Sand. I appear to be on something of an alt.country kick right now.
I’ve also been listening to The Decemberists a lot: great, great band (who recently had the misfortune of having all there gear stolen.
for me lately, it’s been Giant Drag, Bertine Zetlitz, Dillinger Escape Plan, Girls Under Glass, Combichrist, and a pre-release copy of the new Foetus album.
From Detroit to J.A. by the Kleptones is currently recieving heavy rotation from me. Its also available as a free download (bittorrent).
I became addicted to the album Heartbreaker by Ryan Adams (no B in that first name!) on my recent trip to NZ. I think you would like. And, in a completely different key, although I can certainly sense the connection, I can’t get enough Cake, something I discovered via one of Joe Clark’s unforgettable throwaway lines.
Belle & Sebastian, Tom Waits, Beautiful South, Death Cab For Cutie, early REM, Apples in Sterio, Sisters of Mercy, Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Garbage, Smiths, Peter Murphy, Camper Van Beethoven.
Not really new, but I’ve been listening to a bit of Skip James and J.B. Lenoir of late. Wonderful stuff. The Cruel Sea is good for more recent blues.
I’ve gotten into a smattering of Johnny Cash, too; his cover of NIN’s “Hurt” is that rarest of rarities: a song as good as the hype. His older stuff — especially the old cowboy ballads — is great too, if you get into that sort of thing.
Not at all your genre, I suppose, but Clutch are southwest-flavored thrashy blues; kinda like Motörhead if Lemmy were from Texas. The (International) Noise Conspiracy is some of the best punk I’ve heard in a while; the Ruts some of the better old stuff. Chem Lab is my new fave in the industrial genre.
For mellower stuff, Cornelius does a very weird but very beautiful blend of Asian + western influences. They rate right up there with Boom Boom Satellites on the quirky scale, but more ‘pretty’ in a conventional sense.
And of course I need to chuck in my usual plugs for Captain Paranoid and Alabama 3. The latter are touring the UK this spring, and we’ve already got tix for three dates.
You could try the Kaiser Chiefs, especially the songs “Oh My God” and “I Predict a Riot”, from their album “Employment”. I’ve also been liking Elektralow’s song “Pull it to Pieces” of late. I think they’re all available from iTunes.
I’ve been listening to Kings of Convenience, The Delays, The Thrills, Simon & Garfunkel, The Stills, Trespassers William. I’m excited about the new Beck.
Try an edgy electronic music show from Tokyo: Radio OK Fred. Produced 2x a month. http://slidelab.com/spcl.html.
That 2.6 GB BitTorrent file from SXSW has some great stuff in it. The stream of this week’s Solid Steel show should be good too.
I’ve been listening to Bruce Dickinson’s “Chemical Wedding”–Occult-oriented heavy metal, good stuff! Also digging up the classics, “Hendrix Blues”, Dr. John, NIB2
Shivaree’s new album, “Who’s Got Trouble” is not to be missed.
M. Ward’s Transistor Radio is my favorite release of 2005 thus far. Sweet acoustic music that sounds like it’s playing on an AM radio in 1951. Don’t know if it’s your bag, but it gets my vote.
Right now Chapter2 with Nisse Landgren and guitarist Johan Norberg is on rolling on Itunes. Nice, jazzy, great guitarplaying and of course… Swedish…
I would have to recommend Kasabian. You can check them out on iTunes.
Molly, I miss hanging out with you!
I’ve been getting a funk quartet up and running and have been exposed to some pretty amazing stuff lately.
Herbie Hancock and headhunters
headhunters and the pointer sisters
James Brown and Maceo
Maceo and the JBs
Stevie Wonder and… himself!
Check out:
Lyrics Born – a rapper who’s been kicking it for over a decade in Berkley…. mad articulation, interesting content. Just go to his site and turn speakers on.
The Bad Plus – truly a modern jazz piano trio… they do a good iron man
that’s it for now, take care!
As I know you particularly like Porcupine Tree, I would recommend you the eponymous first album ofBlackfield, a band formed with Steven Wilson and Aviv Geffen. It’s been released last year but I discovered it a couple of weeks ago. It’s a REALLY GREAT album!
At the moment I am listening to Arch Enemy – Dead eyes see no future. My iTunes library mainly has death metal and grind in it. I love all kinds of music except country (uuurgh..)
Other stuff i have listened to today:
More later… Cheers,
Remco
Sanity – a little on the heavy side, but it’s goooood stuff.
I’d seriously recommend Badly Drawn Boy. They have a great sound, they did all the music for “About a Boy” if you’ve seen that. The Cranberries is always a fun, occassional listen.
CKY – Plastic Plan
\m/
…and of course.
The best album of 2002.
Vertical Horizon – GO
My site is under constuct. I am building it for my uke playing wife
I just found R. Crumb and The Cheap Suit Serenaders. If you haven’t heard it, it is gem.
[...] pe to catch them live. The Decemberists – Jeremy Keith recommended this band in my “Music Me” post last month. I love this band. I absolutely adore the song “California One [...]
