more zen book info

FOR READERS WAITING for their Zen of CSS books, here’s a bit of information about shipment and arrival dates. The deal is this: Amazon and other booksellers will only list a book in stock if it’s in the warehouse. The books were only off about a week shipping from the distributors, but I was told that fulfillment should be taken care of this week, and books that have been ordered will be shipped ASAP. We appreciate your patience and hope those folks who have been in a holding pattern waiting for their book will find the extra week’s wait worth it.

Also, if you’ve not seen Digital Web this past week, there’s a review of the book by Karen Morrill-McClure and two great interviews with Dave Shea and myself. The fabulous Meryl Evans has an insightful chat with Dave, and the insanely funny Davezilla digs up some dirt about me.

Go forth, enjoy, and keep those horticultural jokes coming!

This really is a pretty good book. But maybe I will get this book in 2006 because the cost of this book is expensive for our Chinese students.Wait, just wait a year for this book~

  2. Yes, I imagine the cost of the book in China will be quite high. But I do want to let folks know that Dave and I worked hard to keep the price point at least somewhat reasonable. Dave especially points out how expensive books can be in Canada, where he lives.

I encourage people to look for discounts and sales – try the peachpit site along with other online sources. FYI, deep discounts on books actually hurts authors in terms of royalties but obviously the goal here is to educate and inspire, so that comes first.

I don’t know what the plans for translations are, but I’m sure we’ll be seeing some eventually.

Canceled Amazon order. Will wait for it to appear at my local Borders (with 20% discount card). The hell with Amazon’s estimate.

  4. Jim Bennett says:

I just ordered my copy at NerdBooks.com for $28.99 delivered to the Pacific Northwest. I should have it by Friday as they ship on the same day that the order is placed.

    Can’t wait!

Borders’ online check of store inventory yesterday for my local store said they had it. I requested it. A human responded to say that it was no longer in stock — presumably a number had come and quickly gone. I went to the store and had a helpful clerk check. Yes, the in-store computer said they had 3 coming in TODAY. They were not on the shelves. The clerk, assuring me that their inventory system was flaky, went into the back room — and returned with two copies of the book. Using my 20% corporate discount card, I bought one. It is Stunningly Beautiful.

  6. Well, I just checked today (been checking Amazon’s website every couple of days) and noticed it finally says they’re preparing it for shipping. Funny since the page still says “Delivery Estimate: Feb 26, 2005 – Mar 1, 2005″ and it’s already two days after the estimate having not yet shipped. I just love technology. Can’t wait to have it in my hands.

Amazon has just shipped (two or three more weeks I’ll have it here in Brazil), but I pre-ordered in November.

My copy of Molly and Dave’s book arrived a day earlier than expected which worked out well. We had plans to take our Yellow Labs (Lumpy & Pisher) over to the Oregon Coast to the usual spot which is very desolate and quiet and they can run around and do their thing. My wife took her new digital SLR to play with and I had the book in by backpack. I set up camp for the crew, grabbed a sandwich and a homemade root-beer and began reading.

In anticipation of starting this book I had pulled out my copy of More Eric Meyer on CSS a couple of days ago and raced through all of the projects. I did the last project 7 or 8 times over 3 days to make sure I really ‘got it’ and that proved to be a good preface for this book. This is the project that was an effort between Eric Meyer and Dave Shea which became one of the the CSS Zen Garden design.

Given who authored this book I was expecting great things and I was not disappointed. It exceeded all of my expectations. It’s fair to say that this is the nicest computer book I’ve ever purchased — bar none. The typography, design, graphics, etc. are close to the level of a coffee-table book, it’s that nice. Having said that I would also note that as nice as the aethestics are the content surpasses the look, i.e. the beauty isn’t only skin deep.

Web development is not my vocation. I have taught myself (X)HTML along with basic PHP & MySQL integration via Dreamweaver MX and quickly moved over completely to BBEdit. For me it’s much easier to hack out my own code than trying to figure out the various features from Macromedia. I maintain 3 web sites that cover my wife’s photography business, my photo restoration/retouching business and a political satire ‘blog’ I publish (almost) daily just for grins.

I own almost every CSS-related book written and like any other subject specific books are better than others. In my opinion this book will become one of the most important CSS/web design references published to date. It’s a book written by professionals, in a professional manner & style which should appeal to designers, web developers & bloggers who view their efforts as a profession and not simply an alternative to watching Bowling For Dollars in the afternoons.

Now if I could just get Dave & Molly to write a tutorial on how to integrate a design into WordPress 1.5 in 7 easy steps I would be eternally grateful.

Thank you both for a job very well done.

Just got the book today (Zen) — dropped everything and jumped in — so far I’m loving it — looking forward to going through it this weekend — and in reviewing it for the Design Bookshelf.
    Will be in touch.

Been checking back here to see what others are reporting about Amazon’s shipping. Hadn’t thought to check the status of my own pre-order in a couple weeks… Was at local Borders yesterday and they had three in stock. Just checked my pre-order at Amazon and, gee, estimated delivery is May 1 – May 5? Hm. I know there can be a delay with the super saver shipping, but that’s nuts. I also think it’s inaccurate since the order is also locked and being prepared. (Fingers crossed!)

What little bit of the book I DID flip through at Borders looked REEEEALLY nice! Looking forward to getting my copy!

  11. Dave Henley says:

nerdbooks.com is one of five technical bookstores in the United States. We have had “Molly & Dave’s” book, The Zen of CSS Design, in stock for almost three weeks.

The ISBN is 0321303474, and we currently have 14 copies in stock at 43% off the retail price. nerdbooks.com ships the same day as long as your order prior to 7 pm CT.

We’ve sold over 30 copies of this book in the last three weeks. It comes highly recommended.

  12. The Zen of CSS Design is a great investment on a topic that is definitely underestimated. Thanks.

  13. I can’t find this book here in the Philippines. I’ve searched in bookstores already. I wonder if they ship at this side of the world. And if yes. How much will it cost me? I have a cousin in California, but he will still have to send it to me, so I thought It might cost the same, if ever.

  14. I build a lot of websites on a day to day basis. CSS, for a long time, eluded me untile i found the Zen of CSS. I am not the best at using CSS. But, atleast now i can make easy changes to my sites with out having to call a pro.
