grilled onions with that?
It’s how I know I’m on the east coast of the US - The bartender asked:
“Do you want grilled onion and mushrooms?”
My answer . . . HELL YES!
Am I wrong? That was one great beef burger with a side of fries. Yum!
Which foods do you miss?

Yum! Grilled onion I’d have to say I’d expect as standard in a burger, but mushrooms are something special. Yum yum yum.

You know you’re in Tucson when you can walk into any of the dozens of tiny Mexican fast food places and order fried pork in a burrito, taco or on a plate. Nothing in the world compares to carnitas!!!

Mushrooms are a no-no for me, but grilled onions are wonderful. I like going to Outback Steakhouse and getting a No Rules Burder with American cheese, bacon, grilled onions, and a side of “aussie chips” (fries with melted cheese and bacon bits). Follow that with a Chocolate Thunder from Down Under and your in line for some high-quality heart disease.

Steak sandwiches (”sammichs”). Canadian Coca-Cola (made with sugar, not corn syrup!). And my grandmother’s ravioli. Mmm.

Delectables I miss from Chicago (many of which are available by mail order, but it’s not the same): Deep-dish pizza from Unos or Dues; Vienna hot dogs from any stand; Italian beef sandwich ditto; good barbecue ribs; a real corned beef sandwich (granted, they may be even more real if you go further east); Fannie Mae Mint Meltaways (green). And somehow, I waited until moving to the Land of Sprouts to blow up like a blimp.

Real Philadelphia hoagies. Silicon Valley has some outlets that come close, but not quite, even if they also sell TasteeKakes. Of course, on the east coast, where can one find a real salad bar, like Fresh Choice or Sweet Tomatoes?

There is a small Italian (real Italian, not Olive Garden Italian) restaraunt near my home town that has a dish called “Pasta Mafia”. It’s a filet mignon cooked and sliced thin over a bed of fettucinni in a red pepper sauce with grilled bell peppers in it.

Being from Miami, I miss authentic Cuban food. Don’t get me wrong, Philadelphia has some great food (especially the junk kind
), but sometimes you just want rice and beans.

I lived in Atlanta for a couple of years, met my hubby there, and then returned to my native midwest. I may have been born in the midwest - but my tastebuds matured in the south. I miss… SWEET TEA & pizza @ MELLOW … and that’s just the start of a long, long, list… after being back in the midwest for over 10 years. In fact, absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Simon you’re all wrong about mushrooms. I love mushrooms, and cooked onions are good as well. Although, I’m being specific on the onions, since I do not like them uncooked.

I miss my former stepfather’s authentic Creole seafood gumbo and jambalaya. I miss shucking oysters at the fish market I worked at and grilling them, then dipping them in a homemade garlic and basil butter sauce. I miss Mike’s Pizza, a joint in Jacksonville, FL that made some greasy yet delicious New York-style pizza. I miss my mom’s homemade chicken cordon bleu with asaparagus in hollandaise sauce. Most of all, I miss a barbecue joint called Tombo’s that made some of the best baked beans in the world and the tenderest pork you could ask for.
Right now, my tastebuds are drowning in saliva. I must rescue them.

I dunno about that, Adam. Remember that game called Animal, Vegetable or Mineral? Well, mushrooms don’t seem to fit in any of those categories. They’re unpleasant little things that grow in dark places (between toes, armpits, etc.) and squeak when you eat them. :::shiver:::
February 24th, 2005 at 1:55 am
Onions should be fried, not grilled. Honestly, you people.

Detroit has the best Middle-Eastern food outside of the Gaza Strip. Lebanese, Turkish, Egyptian, Arabic … I loves me some falafel with pickled beets. I’ll pass on the Ethiopian raw cow’s tongue, however.
February 24th, 2005 at 11:32 am
hehe, I’d love some falafel right now as well
February 24th, 2005 at 1:10 pm
Adam, it hadn’t even occured to me that the mushrooms wouldn’t have been fried - so yes, fried mushrooms and fried onions - cook them until they’re carmalised.
There was an American-themed restaurant in Canterbury that served a burger named “An Englishman in New York”. It was a burger topped with bacon, sausage, fried eggs, mushrooms, onions and - wonderfully - baked beans. All served with fries cooked in black pepper. God, I miss that meal.
February 24th, 2005 at 2:44 pm
Oh, stop it. You’re making me very very hungry.

Guy, I know of a place, Amato’s, on Saratoga Ave. in San Jose (near Campbell) that sells steak sandwiches that feel like the South Jersey variety. It even feels like a steak shop. It’s nothing like Jersey’s, which basically a bar that also serves skimpy steaks. The owner comes from Pennsauken, about 15 minutes from my parents and right across the Betsy Ross Bridge from PA.

‘Shrooms rule.
I miss Southern food–hard to find good fried okra or red-eye gravy in Tucson, believe it or not.
Thai food…oh wait, we do have that here, I just can’t afford to eat out!
February 25th, 2005 at 12:35 pm
Hehe… Shrooms rocks!
February 25th, 2005 at 2:46 pm
No one has, or probably ever will, make fried green tomatoes like My Sweet Momma did.
March 2nd, 2005 at 2:20 pm
Yes, Yvonne, I know Amato’s. They even USED to sell TasteeKakes, but not last time I was in there. Their hoagies are close, but not exactly like my memory. Of course, my memory is from Abington Twp, north of Philly. I haven’t tried Amato’s steak sandwiches. And the joint nearest to my Roslyn home that sold steak sandwiches got busted a few times (reportedly) for using equine, rather than bovine, steak.
November 28th, 2006 at 10:51 pm
I miss that good ole barbecue flavor from down south. Those ribs, that aroma, that hickory smoked flavor. The meat almost falling off the bones drenched in their special Southern barbecue sauce. Potato Salad, cole slaw. Ahh Sorry I have to leave now I need to go get a rack a ribs. See you later :0)
March 3rd, 2007 at 8:52 pm
I can’t do the grilled onions, but mmmm mushrooms and a nice bbq sauce is the tops for a burger. Now I’m hungry!
