where did devedge go?

WHERE DID DEVEDGE go? It’s been unavailable now for well over a week. On Tuesday, October 12th, Eric and I did a session on CSS prototyping using the devedge site design as a sample, and we became aware it wasn’t responding. Fortunately, Eric had a local copy.

I regularly use the Netscape devedge sidebars - specifically the CSS 2.1 bar which I’ve found to be absolutely invaluable. It, the HTML 4.01, DOM2 and XSLT Quick References (among others) are all hosted on the devedge site. The site itself wasn’t expected to be updated, but it was up and running “indefinitely.”

Perhaps indefinite has become definite?

So, I’m starting to wonder. If it’s gone for good, it’d be nice to get those sidebars set up somewhere else - maybe at Mozilla.org or mirrored here and there (and I’d be happy to pitch in some hosting for that).

Does anyone know what’s happening?

I’ve been wondering about the demise of DevEdge as well. Ivan seems to have saved the HTML, CSS, DOM and XSLT portions of the sidebar by using a combination of Google cache and the Wayback Machine. Pretty ingenious. He needs some sort of permanent hosting for it, though.

AOL have taken it down. They own the site and the content. Mitchell is said to be working on it.

Netscape’s DevEdge Offline, mozilla.org To Try and Revive Content
    Tuesday October 12th, 2004

Netscape yesterday seemingly shut down their web developer resource, devedge.netscape.com, without warning. There was a great deal of content available on the site, and Mitchell Baker today posted that mozilla.org is going to try and recover the lost content. For those who are looking for some specific content on the site, much of it has been archived on Google.

I grabbed Ivan’s copies. Also, Tim Luoma has created a standalone version you can run offline of both the HTML 4.01 and the CSS 2.1 bars. This will be nice for working in airports without wireless.

It will be very cool if Mitchell gets things sorted out and devedge can be revived in some way via Mozilla.

I have managed to scape together most of the important content for the DevEdge sidebar including the HTML, CSS2, CSS2.1, DOM2 and XSLT references including all required files (including the correct XUL, stylesheets, scripts and images).
