a few good reads

A FEW GOOD reads for my fellow web professionals:

XHTML

“XHTML is what is getting companies to become aware of Web Standards. Not HTML.”

From The Case for XHTML, by Faruk Ates.

Usability and User Interface Design

“Should everything be so damned obvious all of the time?”

Gotta love that – from Please Make Me Think! Potential dangers in usability culture by Andrei Herasimchuk.

Oh, and another from Andrei, The Real Reason you should care about Web Standards:

“When it comes to technology, we are collectively truly only as strong as the weakest link.”

And a great bit from one of my favorite talents Kevin Cheng from OK-Cancel:

“ . . . users that have overcome the hurdles of a difficult application may wear their achievements as a badge of honour.”

The article is cleverly titled Technomasochism: Do Users Like Pain?

Faruk has written a great XHTML article – very cool to find it listed on this web site. Which by the way, is an amazing web site.

  2. I liked Faruk’s article, but I am cautious of his endorsement of selling XHTML on its ‘hotness’. Hype misleads and confuses people. It gets neurotic people like myself worked up from time to time.

Regarding standards: just stick to what they are and what they are not and the rest will work itself out, no?

Nice to see Faruk’s site up, finally! :D

  3. Faruk Ates says:

    Seth,

I’m not trying to suggest that people should sell XHTML on its hotness, but rather that we shouldn’t confuse companies by trying to convince them that XHTML isn’t hot.

What I’m saying is basically that we should take advantage that XHTML is hot – and when companies contact us for “an XHTML website”, THEN we explain them that there is more to Web Standards than XHTML. But, and this is important, we shouldn’t try and remove the hotness factor of XHTML. Just let that ‘myth’ continue. :)

And I’ve dropped my opinion on it as well. Not much, but it’s something. At me blog, as usual.
