THE NEW FIFTY dollar bill is here – in living color.
While the first addition of color to U.S. notes began to be distributed last year on $20.00 bills, this week, the second colorful child is added to the mix. The new $5o.00 bill is oh-so-pretty. Next up? The $10.00 bill.
I always wondered why we had such boring money in the U.S. Alas, no plans to color up a fiver, oner, or the rarer 2 buck bill, but it looks like $100’s will be redesigned at some as-yet undeclared point in the future.

Don’t you think Australians have the coolest notes? with the little transparent bits?
I like the euro. American money always looks a bit cheap to me.
Australian money is pretty neat, you can accidentally put it through the washing machine and it’ll come out damage free and cuddly soft.

My favorite is the $5 CDN bill.
American money, as far as I remember, can handle a trip through the laundry as well. The “paper” actually consists of cotton, among other things. I used to work at a bank, and I remember when the new $20s came out. There are little raised ridges on some parts (for authenticity) that make all the bills stick together.
I’m glad I don’t work there anymore, because I remember for a good solid month everybody would be like, “can I get that in new 20s?” as if they’re some rare collectors’ item. And they’d actually be mad if you didn’t have it in new bills for ‘em.
From what I understand, this redesign is to be pretty short-lived. The U.S. Mint is going to cycle in new bills on a rather regular basis, in order to keep ahead of counterfeiting technology.
I can’t wait until paper money is a thing of the past and we all have chip implants in our necks, with little blinking LED’s that just barely show through the skin in the dark. Oh, that’ll be the day…

Is it not illegal in the US to reproduce bank notes as you have done here? In the UK that would be illegal… although I wouldn’t bet any money on much action been taken!
I really miss those, Martin: they’re still the most beautiful money I’ve ever seen. By the way, would you believe I’m in the same class as the daughter of the very designer of those notes? We’re studying graphic and typographic design at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague.
On the subject of the US Dollar: I always thought the notes looked boring, but had a more “money feel” to them than all the other notes I’ve seen, somehow. Adding color might take away a bit of that “money feel” for me, but they’ll probably look better and will probably be harder to reproduce (which has been fairly easy so far, from what I udnerstand).

Still looks rather bland to me. I like our new Canadian currency. I’ve yet to see the new 20s in circulation though.

It’s about time the Americans caught up with the rest of the world by adding a little colour, but everyone is still way behind the Aussies! Not only are our notes coloured, but we’ve little plastic windows in all of them, plus our coins are the most creative I’ve ever seen. We’ve got non-circluar coins (ie. the 50¢ has 12 sides), plus some coins are mult-coloured, and I’ve heard of one that even has moving parts. It’s just unfortunate that most of those are uncirculated, collectors edition coins only.
Congratulations USA, that pretty much brings you up to… oh, Canadian money from 30 years ago.
If you want to see the next step, here’s what just started circulating in the past few weeks. You can’t tell from the photo, but the 20’s have holograms running down the left-hand side. Now THAT will be hard to reproduce with my ink jet…

Canadian money is multi-culoured. I’ve always thought the US bills were so plain congrats to the US on your new 50 in colour. By the Way Canada just started circulating the worlds first coloured coin, in rememberance of the fallen soldiers, isn’t that nice? check it out

Scottish pound notes are cool. In the UK its different banks that mints money, not the government. The Royal Bank of Scotland notes are the best. Ive never really liked Bank of England notes though.
