fast company changes linking policy
In response to public concern raised about Fast Company’s beyond-bizarre linking policy, said policy has been amended:
“Fast Company permits links to the Fastcompany.com Web site. However, Fast Company reserves the right to withdraw permission for any link and requests that you not link for any impermissible purpose or in a manner that suggests that Fast Company promotes or endorses your Web site.”
I’m sorry, but the policy still makes no real sense. And I’m not the only one who thinks so. Cory Doctorow writes that he thinks Fast Company can change their linking policy to something more along the lines of this:
“The Web exists because no one has the right to grant or withhold permission for links. Fast Company exists because of the Web. Accordingly, we neither grant nor deny permission to link to our site, and urge you to do the same.”
Now that makes sense.

Here is the linking policy for Mr. Helpful.com (all rights reserved including the right to be right except when I am wrong):
I hereby give EVERYONE (and their brother) permission to link to my site. You dont even have to pay me. Hopefully I dont have to pay you. All proceeds donated to my favorite charity which happens to be that low rent dive two blocks down the street. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Hmm. That seems similar to the linking policy for whatabutthole.com.

Failure to link to this site will result in a friendly visit from our staff. Further refusal to link under the aforementioned duress will be immediately punishable with a rather vicious whipping using a pair of support panty hose full of fruit cocktail. That is all.

If there was something interesting on FastCompany, I’d do a link protest and link to everything they had. Maybe create a page o’ FastCompany links. Or better yet, my own FastCompany rss feeds full of links.

Have to say, why would anyone with even the tiniest smallest bit of a life want to access, never mind link to the Fastcompany site? I can think of better ways to spend my time.

I still find it hard to believe that any court in any land would support such a un-legally binding statement, of course that doesn’t really matter, they’d send repeated nasty lawyer letters to your ISP or Hosting providor until they shut down your website because they don’t want to pay up for a lawyer to tell them that there’s no realistic prospective of them ever winning a case to deny hotlinking to a site.
