please don’t ralph
Okay, I’ll admit it. I voted Nader last time and I will probably burn for it at some point.
But this time, it’s just wrong. Ralph, stop it. You should not be running. You are causing more harm than good in this case.
I have long loved Nader for his integrity and relentless consumer advocacy. But this is crap. Ralph Nader go home.

Ralph Nader is not a Democrat. So why is it wrong for him to run? I think criticizing and discrediting him for it is a slap in the face of Democracy.

I think if Democrats are worried about losing votes to Nader, they need to take a serious look at the loyalty of their constituents, and why it dissipates so easily. To not be introspective about how flaws in the Democrat philosophy might be contributing to the exile, is arrogant to say the least.

I suppose the problem may lie more with the voters than Nader himself. Ultimately it is our responsibility as voters to make the decision “do we care more about moving forward or about voicing our discontent?”
A big myth last election perpetuated by such people as Michael Moore was that there was no big difference between the two major political parties - that they were equally beholden to corporate interests and therefore indistinguishable. But…um…Well, I don’t think we’d be at war with Iraq in a Gore administration, for one thing.
Sometimes the electorate needs to suck it up and compromise and this is certainly one of those times. Even if it’s just a big vote against Bush all the factions need to unite and make it happen instead of berating the Democrats for not achieving some sort of Utopian vision of equality.

Rather unclear post. Why don’t you think Nader should be running?
Democrats seem to be arguing that Nader could pull votes away from their candidate, which might assist Bush. This, of course, assumes that those votes would go to the Democrat, were Nader not running.
Speaking as a member of the Green Party, I’d like to suggest otherwise. I would never vote for a Democrat (or the candidate for any party backwards enough to suggest that limiting choice improves Democracy).

Nader has every right to run again, but his candidacy is not good for us as a nation or him as a person. He will once again run, not as a Green Party representative (to build that party) but as an independent. This candidacy has the effect of shriveling the man and his noble legacy. This time, he is not taking on a cause in behalf of the little guy, environment, corporate greed but himself. While this is not surprising in most politicians, it is surprising for Nader. He has a record of activism that should make him the envy of most Americans. He has made a career out of blasting big corporations, big organizations, and big egos. Even his run for president in 2000 could be seen in those terms. It’s harder to see what his goals is this time and whom he’s speaking for, when so few want him to run.
Nader’s run on the Green Party ticket in 2000 is credited, in many quarters, with costing the Democrats the presidency and the case can be made if you look at the vote margins. You can also argue, as Nader does, that Gore, cost himself the election with a series of missteps. Nader has every right to run and it isn’t necessarily true that his candidacy this time will cause the Democrats to once again lose the white house.
I believe his candidacy in the end, will prove negligible. For a man of his achievements, that seems sad. It can hardly be what he had in mind. What does he have in mind? Nobody was beckoning him to the race. Nader will only diminish himself with this run. You do not have to be a huge Nader fan, or a close follower of his career, to understand that this is a letdown.

I voted for Ralph in 2000 and have been sorry for it every time I saw or heard the words “President Bush”.
Ralph, Dennis Kucinich already “did you” better than you can “do” yourself, and got a measly 1% of the Arizona Primary vote. Get a clue.

Hey! You Americans can actually vote for your head of state, do you realise what a big deal that is? I’m in UK; would I vote for Prince Charles if he were standing for president? No, I wouldn’t, and neither would anyone that I’ve asked (2,438 people so far).

There was an interview this weekend with Nader on NPR All Things Considered…apparently he’s saying his running will cost Bush, not the Dems??

I’m tempted to say, “behold a noble mind o’erthrown”…

For those still wondering…
A vote for Nader is one’s way of saying to the Democratic Party, “Don’t take my vote for granted.” Worked pretty well in the last presidential election, too.
But look what we got for it.
Now that another Inside-The-Beltway candidate is likely to be the Democratic nominee (thus forcing anyone who votes their conscience to pick the lesser of two evils, whee) a Nader candidacy runs the risk of sucking enough votes away from the Democrats to cause a repeat of the debacles that were the last two election cycles.
In other news, walking home tonight I saw an “Anybody But Bush 2004″ bumper sticker.
Since I appear quite near to moving to one of the Red States, I felt a twinge of homesickness before its time…

I may or may not share Keith Burgin’s political views but I agree with his prediction, Bush will win either way . When polls shows/showed (January 04 CNN poll was 66% for the war) that a majority of Americans agree with the reasons for going to war - and that almost 9 months after the operations started - this qualifies as a popular war. A president fighting a popular war will not be thrown out, for better or worse.

It’s all of no consequence, anyway. No matter how close the polls are currently, I don’t think even if Nader were to quit that the Democrats would carry the election.
February 23rd, 2004 at 11:35 am
I turned 18 in 1977 e.v.; since then it’s been “the lesser of two evils or That Evil Bastard will win” instead of feeling free to vote my conscience. Getting tired of it.

PS No plans to vote for Nader, all the same. Don’t like the way he disappeared after the last election.

Well I know I will be chided for this but here goes… I hope Nader will turn out to be the Ross Perot of George Bush Senior in the Buch vs Clinton race. I heard some reports this morning of Kerry’s wife donating to less tha America charities… but I am sure you won’t hear about it on Peter Jennings’ Show…
Hey Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” opens Wednesday Feb 25th. How about let’s go see it and leave our political squabblings behind for 2 hours!
Molly I know you are Jewish, but if you read this, are you planning on seeing it?

I don’t think Nadar’s run will have much impact on anybody but the Green Party. He may steal votes from their candidate (Will it be Cobb or Camejo? Inquiring minds want to know!). He could also round up some disaffected Deaniacs, but I suspect that in the absence of Ralph, their votes would have turned Green, which brings me back to my original theory. Nadar is good for some media hype right now, but this is going to boil down to who will cross party lines in greater numbers, Democrats for Bush or Republicans for Kerry (or Edwards). As a corollary, which party will swing the most independent voters. And that may be the decisive factor.
