one sure piece of gold

In web years I’m a grandma at 41. That’s okay with me, because while I don’t have any kids of my own, I’ve had a rare honor. I’ve gotten to work with and watch talented web designers such as Tobias Horvath, Dunstan
Orchard
, and Dave Shea grow and thrive and shine so brilliantly.

You might remember Eddie, a fellow who emailed me a couple of days ago asking for help dealing with HTML frames. I had a sense from his original email that he was quite young, so I wrote back and asked him how old he was. It turns out he is just 10 years old. I wrote him again and asked him to have his mom email me, and if she said it was okay, I’d send him some books, which she did.

She told me that Eddie is extremely interested in the web, and spends his time on the web or reading about web design. It reminds me that I still do that
too! I remain profoundly interested in the web and for a lot of really great reasons.

The biggest challenge I see right now when it comes to newcomers to web design and development - no matter their age - is how not to overload them with all our baggage of the last decade, yet still inspire and direct them toward web standards and intelligent practices.

I think that along with the books I’m going to send that Eddie would truly benefit from some words of encouragement and insight from others here.

One sure piece of gold in return, I promise.

Eddie, much of the time most of our “baggage” problems come from ourselves. It seems to be a Western cultural trait that encourages us to see issues from our own perspective (the cowboy), rather than take the time and effort to review alternative perspectives. Good projects identify all perspectives and weigh the consequences and opportunities of all groups and the hardest part of good design is to put your passion on line with others passions.

It is what’s best for the project not what is best for us. Diversity of opinion is not only politically correct it is structurally and economically correct. Fortunately, we can control ourselves and build this into our design philosophy and methods and thus this can be an easy fix. It just takes practice.

Aw, Molly, your sentimental side is showing - and it’s great!

Eddie, you have probably just made one of the best connections in your budding career as a Web designer. I’ve been following Molly’s advice and ideas for several years and she won’t steer you wrong!

Sometimes Molly seems to be a bit strict on the subject, but it’s obviously because her passion for the craft is so strong. She wants to get it right and more importantly, she wants all of us to get it right too! Even if that means she comes down a bit hard on us sometimes. (I speak from experience!)

    Thanks Molly!

As a trainer, a large part of the problem is that baggage of the past decade. Since the web is in something of a Transitional time, I find myself in the awkward position of having to teach budding web developers two different worlds of information, because web developers today have to deal with both worlds.

I’m looking forward to the day (which will probably come around the same time as the personal jetpack) when I can just fire up a batch of newbies with XHTML and CSS with no qualifiers, detailed history, or five methods to do the same thing. In other words, teach it the way you could’ve taught HTML ten years ago.

The only problem is that web standards aren’t enforced. Sure you can *say* that you are going to do something, but when the deadline comes around and miracles must be performed standards are often compromised.

Here is an irrational thought– Let’s actually enforce the speed limit. Every city, county and state has hundreds of signs posted, but how many people pay attention? But the second a laser shoots out the sky and blows your grandma to bits, everyone will be putting around 5 mph below the limit. Kinda’ like the web world– no company will invest money to rewrite something that already works, unless they absolutely have to. Of course they would have to, if it didn’t pull up in the latest version of IE.

Until then I will quit my whining and deal with my inherited 1400 files living in frames, as it doesn’t look like any *newbies* will ever learn how…

I’ll pass along the best piece of advice I ever got from Molly:

    Learn the code!

It works for web design, and a few other important things in life too.

  7. Teri Homan Says:

Molly, I do love that you enjoy mentoring.

Eddie, congratulations on making the just the best connection ever with Molly. She really knows her stuff and from the sounds of it you’ll be stiff competition for us all in the very near future.

Learn the code, learn the software, and above all, have great fun exploring and creating cool stuff on the web.
