waco revisited

Waco: The Rules of Engagement hit U.S. cable December, 2003. BBC Four aired it back in April.
This Oscar-nominated documentary from 1997 seemed to miss its time upon release. Now re-introduced to cable audiences across the U.K. and U.S., this is a gripping, fascinating, horrifying and highly controversial film from director William Gazecki. Waco: The Rules of Engagement has left me thinking and re-thinking some of my core values in very uncomfortable ways.

I’ve seen this documentary several times. It’s a pretty good piece. Lots of stuff that’s fact, some that’s speculated, but the speculated stuff is at least well thought out.
Waco was a tragedy caused, in my opinion, by lack of leadership in the Justice Department - who at the time had dibs on the situation. Conflicting orders, lack of troop control, and a lack of patience on the part of Janet Reno and her subordinates led to the death of those people.
In addition, the massive cover-up that followed showed just how far an administration will go to cover their collective asses.
I’m a conservative. I believe in law enforcement, I believe in government having certain authority. I believe in limitations to that authority - that government should be held accountable for overstepping those limitations. And I believe Waco was a royal cluster-f**k and that somebody should have had their ass kicked.

from first hand experience as a combat medic in Nam, I experienced the extremes of suspension of “rules of enguagement”. some were needed due to “extreme circumstance”= i never got over the process of being trained to save lives and then being asked to participate in the extinction of them. However as I mentioned I came back to a changed world. The value of human life desentegrated somehow. It was easy for a public and a Nation to just turn off the tube to things that had become “live reporting” as well as their questioning of what those events meant when elemenal values were challenged on a personal level. Too bad they never exposed school children at some point to “values clarification” exercises. I think we have a society that really never has defined some of their core values as you mention. Mine were bludgeoned and broken down through military training to be able to accept things that Here would never be acceptable, the only problem was that deep inside of each of us are an inate set of values that sometimes remain intact despite attempts to permantenty or temporarily alter them. Pealing layers of the onion that our cultural upbringing and societial lessons have given us may leave us raw and unsure about just where some of those values came from in the first place. I am still amazed that even with “live reporting and supposed Facts” how things can be manipulated by the press as well as governments. and especially how the value of human life, any life has become akin to generations watching something surreal or cartoonlike on the TV or even in real life, too easily tuned out, ignored, or unquestioned. I was and still remain outside of the mainstream of this culture and some of its values. Apart in too many ways, and like the title of the old movie “lost in America” or just an “accidental Tourist” looking for some meaning and sense. sorry this is too long and perhaps confusing. blessings to all in the New Year, and hopes of personal peace and some measure of safety.

Keith said: “I’m a conservative. I believe in law enforcement, I believe in government having certain authority. I believe in limitations to that authority - that government should be held accountable for overstepping those limitations. ”
As it turns out, I’m something of a liberal, and I believe all those things as well. Somebody alert the media!

I showed the Waco movie to some students at my university. If you all liked that movie, may I also suggest, “The Panama Deception,” which I found to be equally compelling.

WHY!!!!!!!!!
DID SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE TO DIE!!!
SO MANY PEOPLE LOST THEIR LIVES DUE TO THE IGNORANCE OF THE GOVERNMENT AND THAT B—- JANET RENO!!
INNOCENT CHILDREN’S LIVES WERE LOST, UNFORTUNATE;Y WE’LL NEVER KNOW WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN THE DIFFERENCE IN SO MANY LIVES DUE TO THE LOSS OF LIFE ON FEBRUARY 28,1993.
PEOPLE WILL NEVER KNOW THE GREATNESS OF IMPACTS THAT THOSE CHILDREN COULD HAVE OR WOULD HAVE MADE.
WHY SO MANY LIVES LOST(POLITICS)?
JANERT RENO AND THE GOVERNMENT DIDN’T PROVE A THING EXCEPT FOR HOW IGNORANT THEY CAN BE AND HOW SELFISH THEY CAN BE.
STILL YET THEY WANT PEOPLE TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THEIR DECISIONS THAT THEY CHOOSE TO MAKE AND CHOICES THAT THEY MAKE.
BUT YET THE GOVERNMENT NOR JANET RENO WILL TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR DECISIONS OR ACTIONS.
ISN’T THE GOVERNMENT SUPPOSED TO SET THE EXAMPLES FOR THIS COUNTRY?
WHAT THE HELL!! KIND OF EXAMPLES WERE THEY SETTING WHEN THEY SENSELESSLY TOOK SO MANY LIVES.
THOSE YOUNG ONES THAT WERE KILLED DUE TO THE GOVERNMENTS F—- UP AND JANET RENO’S UNCARINGNESS, THOSE CHILDREN WILL NEVER KNOW ALOT OF THINGS.
ONE THING YOU CAN BE DAMN SURE OF YOU CAN’T COUNT ON AND DEPEND ON OUR GOVERNMENT TO MAKE THE RIGHT DECISIONS FOR US.
THEY NEED TO TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHAT THEY’VE DONE BY THE ACTIONS THAT THEY HAVE TAKEN.
WHEN WILL THERE BE TRUE JUSTICE!
