i’m a saint
It’s true! Only I’d forgotten. Today I reached up to grab something off a closet shelf and a paper came wafting down. I picked it up to find my official Universal Life Church declaration of sainthood.
Dated August 7, 1995, I was given this honor when I helped create the first “official” ULC Web site. The ULC minister was so happy with the work he made me a saint.
Truly one of the oddest jobs I’d ever done (and I’ve done a lot of odd jobs–and shut up, I know what yer thinking). They were great clients and while I have nothing to do with their current Web site, you can still get ordained there. And while you can’t get a Saint certificate like me (I’m special), you can become a Goddess, Angel, and even a Druid there for only 10 bucks a shot.
It is overcast today in sunny Tucson, which is very nice. We’re supposed to get a heck of a storm, nothing that Isabel wouldn’t have sneered at with superiority, but a hurricane-induced storm nonetheless.
Also, Dunstan posted this link to Carl Hiaasen’s letter that was read at Warren Zevon’s funeral a couple of weeks ago.
Do you hold any dubious honors? If so, I’d like to know, so comment below.

I’ve never held any dubious honors, but when I was younger I wished I’d met more gals who forgot they were saints.

Hey there. I was just browsing on the net and I stumbled across your site, which is, if I may say, very cool. I am pretty young and havn’t been living very long. You seem like you’ve seen a lot of things and lived a great life. You seem very wise. I like the whole thing about being a saint. It was pretty neat. Well, I think I’m going to head out. Bye.

I have the dubious honor of being trained by you (Molly E. Holzschlag)to become a “WOW Certified Professional Web Developer”.
thanks Molly!

Well for all of us who know you personally couldn’t disagree with the concept of you being a Saint.
The question is St. Molly is the patron saint of what?
Perhaps you should become the patron saint of XHTML or clean mark-up.

I think it gets boring having patron saints of specific causes all the time - “patron saint of this” or “patron saint of that.”
I think it would be exciting if you were:
“Molly Holzschlag - patron saint of all things general in nature.”
That would be cool.

Apparently I’m an Honourary Canadian Citizen.

Jennifer,
You’re right! I suck! You can become a saint. And here I was under the impression I was somehow special.

what makes you say that I can’t become a saint? my friend andy became a saint last year and I applied for sainthood today.

Sainthood is a very important thing. Your life gets to be an example to everyone. (Whether that’s good or bad…..)
I like ‘Angel’ myself. At the ULC Seminary site, we decided to expand the list. It’s amazing the variety of titles that people come up with!

Anyone can become a Saint through Universal Life Church. They don’t even need to be ordained through us. We do ask that when you send in your request that you include a little note stating WHY you think you deserve to be a Saint. To become a Saint is a donation of $5.00. We now offer a gold foil seal and special printing for an additional $8.00. Our official website, www.ulchq.com, will be up and running within 4 weeks.

Actually, there is no official “Saint Molly”. You can check at the website I listed which gives references to “how one becomes a saint” and why…
It is quite uncool that just anyone can proclaim someone a ’saint’ or worse, proclaim yourself one. That just nullifies the meaning of saint to those who respect the actual Community of Saints.
Just had to share my two cents after stumbling unto this site

Oops, the link didn’t show up. Here it is:

The FAQ section is the best part:
http://www.catholic.org/saints/faq.php
Excerpts:
How does the Church choose saints? (the Catholic Church that is)
Canonization, the process the Church uses to name a saint, has only been used since the tenth century. For hundreds of years, starting with the first martyrs of the early Church, saints were chosen by public acclaim. Though this was a more democratic way to recognize saints, some saints’ stories were distorted by legend and some never existed. Gradually, the bishops and finally the Vatican took over authority for approving saints.
In 1983, Pope John Paul II made sweeping changes in the canonization procedure. The process begins after the death of a Catholic whom people regard as holy. Often, the process starts many years after death in order give perspective on the candidate. The local bishop investigates the candidate’s life and writings for heroic virtue (or martyrdom) and orthodoxy of doctrine. Then a panel of theologians at the Vatican evaluates the candidate. After approval by the panel and cardinals of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, the pope proclaims the candidate “venerable.”
The next step, beatification, requires evidence of one miracle (except in the case of martyrs). Since miracles are considered proof that the person is in heaven and can intercede for us, the miracle must take place after the candidate’s death and as a result of a specific petition to the candidate. When the pope proclaims the candidate beatified or “blessed,” the person can be venerated by a particular region or group of people with whom the person holds special importance.
Only after one more miracle will the pope canonize the saint (this includes martyrs as well).

Dear Molly I’ve seen your site and think it’s great. I’m Glad that you remembered you’re a saint through the ULC. I’m distantly related to St. Camillius de Lellis who is the patron St. of nurses and Hospitals. Love and Light to you and yours
