is a VW bus in my future?

Well I do want to say thanks for all the very cool feedback regarding my thoughts on going back to school to get my Ph.D. I don’t know what I’m going to do yet, but I’m going to think a lot about it. I am normally very impulsive (surprise, surprise) but thinking this one through seems a smarter approach.

I’m going to keep the poll gone for one more day, currently it appears that most people think I should sell it all, buy a van, and run around naked. I’m truly glad to have my free spirit be so, erm, appreciated.

Never underestimate the power of the word “naked” online. If you’d said, “Get a PhD naked,” that would have gotten the most votes. :)

    But Seriously, MH:

Since I am currently trying to digest your wonderful new CSS book, I would have to say that a Ph.D. would just be a distraction. What would you do with it?

Of course, you could always be the coolest prof on campus and drive up to the building in your VW bus, strolling up to the lecturn naked. Best of both worlds. Retention of the day’s lesson might not be as high as you would like, but attendance would be great.

Something is missing from your life? Well, guess what? It’s supposed to be. That’s what drives us. Happens to the best, especially at midlife. Read “Way of the Peaceful Warrior” by Dan Millman if you haven’t already. Or “The Journey” by Tom Brown, Jr. If it can happen to them, it can sure happen to the rest of us. And maybe it should. Bide your time if you have to, until you realize that the best is truly yet to come.

    Think about this:

You may see the holy grail just ahead – within your grasp. However, it may simply be the grail-shaped beacon.

    Bad Zoot!

I voted for grad school. In the poll, I mean.

Isn’t learning one of the things you do best?

    ::smile::

  5. ben says:

And last I heard, you weren’t too bad at that “teaching” thingy, either. ::grin::

Of course, this whole train of thought totally ignores the takeaway of going and doing things to which you have no prior point of reference.

    Learning, indeed.

  6. bruce says:

Reject these either/ or choices! combine them all. Go naked in a combi van and study for a PhD.

Whatever you do, don’t do it until you write a new book for Dreamweaver MX 2004. :)

Seriously, you are a real pioneer in the new paradigm of information distribution and education (in all you have done professionally regarding the web).

As one who has greatly benefitted from your books and various digirati-type endeavors, I’d hate to see you turn your vehicle onto tenure-track road. You can write your own job description now; if you want to change it, you can — to something no one has even thought of before. That’s the kind of freedom you have to kiss good-bye in the academic jungle.

Academia doesn’t generally like that “new paradigm” thing. They only embrace it after it has become the “old paradigm.”

Anyway, my opinion, for what it’s worth. I have a master’s degree, and I don’t regret getting it, but I also left academia, so I know that the issues are far from simple.

I found your site on google for the term the future of the VW bus and although this is not particularly in line with the article I’m writing, I was amused by the comments above. Personally, I run around naked whenever I get the chance and I have two VW buses at the moment, so I say go for it girl!

  19. My T4 van is 19 years old. The best vehicle i´ve ever seen before. Only the wheels und some cable were repaird by mechanic. One years ago I installed an DVD player with 7″ TFT and paint in metalic blue. Now i love it so much. I´ll spend a Blu-Ray Rack, when the van will have 20. bithday.
