egg on face for the riaa?
Apparently, the RIAA is a little concerned about its “let’s sue some file sharers” strategy. I mean, what if they sue a teenage boy dying of cancer stuck in his room sick to death from chemo with only his computer and music for comfort? What if they sue a truly sweet grandma, who owns the computer upon which her teenage granddaughter, whom grandma took in after the poor young girl’s parents were killed in a horrible car accident?
What will people say? Will they see the RIAA as an evil entity, crushing the lives of already crushed young lives?
Rumor has it that while the RIAA is surely going to move ahead with its legal but ludicrous plot to sue file sharers, it is concerned about possible backlash from public image problems that might arise out of their lawsuits.
If Madison Avenue ever means so much to me that I would venture to think about things in this typically American “me-first” way, someone shoot me.
See, so maybe I will die at the hands of a murderer after all.

People nearly always overlook the ‘wooden badger’ strategy… a sad fact of modern day life.
I think the RIAA are barmy if they believe this course of action will get rid of their problems. On a local level we don’t even need these file sharing groups and utilities to copy and share music - my brother just copied 2,500 songs from my laptop, my friends and I swap CDs all the time to copy and listen to.
At my old office in London, everyone who worked there brought in all their favourite CDs and copied them to a machine bought just as an MP3 server. We probably had 20Gbs worth of music on there and it all got distributed out to friends or other offices.
I think in the UK, where highspeed access isn’t so prevelant, organised file sharing isn’t the main way of moving music about. I’m sure a great deal gets passed around between friends or at work.
Just my experience.

I completely agree that they’re not going to stop the majority of fileswappers. Nor do I think this is the right strategy. I’m just speculating on their strategy may very well be 180 degrees from the result.
But, as I said, any results are better than the nothing they were getting with the “Oh, poor us…” strategy they had going to begin with.

My personal opinion is that this is a calculated “PR” sacrifice. From word one, suing individuals, including teens and grandmas, was never going to be looked at as any sort of justice in almost anyone’s eyes. However, accomplishes two things, IMHO.
It establishes the RIAA as the big, evil entity and takes the public eye off of the individual media companies. Yes, we all know that the RIAA is the representative of the media companies, but the face is just different enough to allow folks like Sony to back away from the fray a bit and have a little deny-ability for the RIAA’s actions. We’ve already seen that tactic.
And, in some ways these actions have forced some folks to think about the issue while other methods did not (ie: whining, crying, and trying to convince the public that media companies were in danger of going bankrupt.)
Eventually, these actions will bring about a public awareness of the issue that can’t be bought with any advertising campaign. It won’t stop everybody, but it may stop some, and to the RIAA that’s more than they would have gotten otherwise, regardless of the temporary “PR” hit.
Personally, I think they should have built a large wooden badger…

I had a dream where I was running up into the sky, almost like flying. There where others beside me, behind me and in front of me. All of us where headed in the same direction. I guess the objective was to climb the skies, climb until we got to the very top (Heaven?). It was almost like a race to reach the top. Finally I reach the end of the skies, there is a white wall, I and others touch it and then people begin to free fall back down to earth. I watch others willingly fall, they look happy to do so. I fall with them, it feels like I fall for but a second. I can feel the wind rush past me and I’m aware of the weightlessness of my body as I fall to the ground. Talk about having a weird dream.
